LLELA - August 31, 2008

Fished Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area (LLELA) this morning. Good current but still wadeable - see picture below.

Had several strikes flyfishing a streamer but no hook-ups. Did observe a few baitfishermen catching Catfish, else slow action.

A Small Pond at UTD - August 29, 2008

While at the University of Texas - Dallas for a sporting activity, snuck away to a hidden pond/creek on campus. Fished a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant and caught two Sunfish. Pictures posted below.

Russell Creek Park - August 28, 2008

Fished the pond at Russell Creek Park in the late afternoon/early evening. Caught a small Bass and Bluegill/Sunfish on a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant.

Fishing partner caught two Bass and Bluegill/Sunfish using a Green Foam Rubber Spider Variant. Also, saw a small alligator that others mentioned on the fishing forums. It was a small one but not shy of my fishing fly.

Bethany Lakes - August 27, 2008

Back again to Bethany Lakes' Lower Pond this afternoon. Did not strike out this time, catching an 11" Bass and some Bluegill on flyfishing gear and a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant. Pictures posted below.

No joy today!

Broke away for a quick trip to Bethany Lakes. Although we saw small Bass in the shallows, were not able to connect. Oh well, cannot get them every trip.

FYI: Used Foam Rubber Spider Variants in a Grasshopper and Beetle pattern. Also, switched to a Black and Red Zonker and a Crappie Jig Variant. In all cases, no hook-ups.

Russell Creek Park Pond - August 24, 2008

Fished Russell Creek Park this morning. Park has a pond and is located in the city of Plano. Caught Bluegill and Sunfish flyfishing a Foam Rubber Spider Variant. Pictures posted below.

Used Yellow and White with equal results. Also, hooked a small Bass but lost it close to shore as I was bringing it in.

Bethany Lakes Lower Pond - August 20, 2008

Fished Bethany Lakes Lower Pond looking for Bass. Caught an 8.5" Sunfish and a small Bluegill but no Bass. Pictures posted below.

Also, noticed the area where the Upper Pond feeds into the Lower Pond has been changed. Looks as if the area has more rocks built around it. Not sure if this impacted the Bass' pattern or it was the rain. Will wait a few days before fishing it again.

Foam Rubber Spider Variants

Could not breakaway today due to other committments. Opted to tie fishing flies to replace the Foam Rubber Spider Variants that I have been losing while fishing.

Tied six Foam Rubber Spider Variants - White, Yellow, and Green. Tied in the same manner as a Foam Rubber Spider with one variation - body is shaped to simulate a grasshopper instead of a spider.

Can be fished slowly on the surface or let it sink and fish it wet. When fished wet, simulates a small baitfish. Posted samples below.

Fishing in the Rain - August 18, 2008

Fished Bethany Lakes' Lower Pond in the early evening despite the rain showers. Caught three Bass, a Bluegill, and a Sunfish fishing a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant.

Bass ranged from 12" to 17.5" in size. Pictures posted below. Also, saw several large Koi working the shallows as it rained.

Nice break in the heat; even better with the fish being more active!

Bethany Ridge and Bethany Lakes This Morning

Fished Bethany Ridge Park this morning. Saw Bass in the feeder creek and the main pond's shallows, approached lightly but could not connect.

Went across the street to Bethany Lakes' Lower Pond and caught 10 Bluegill that went 7"+ in size and a small Sunfish. Used flyfishing gear and a Yellow Foam Rubber Spider Variant, most were caught shallow.

Seemed picky this morning in that they preferred Yellow over White. Interesting. Pictures posted below.

Bethany Ridge Park - August 16, 2008

One 9" Bass this morning at Bethany Ridge Park. Caught in the shallows of the main pond on a Yellow Foam Rubber Spider. Did observe Bass in the feeder canal but they were very skittish; need to approach lightly next time. Picture posted below.

Another 30" Quick Trip

Another quick trip with a time limit of 30 minutes and one fishing fly. Used a Yellow Foam Rubber Spider Variant instead of the Green from yesterday. Caught two Bluegill and a 10" Bass at Bethany Lakes' Lower Pond. Pictures posted below.

Bethany Lakes' Lower Pond - August 12, 2008

Fished Bethany Lakes' Lower Pond in the late afternoon. Pond is the one closest to Joe Farmer Recreation Center.

Caught two Bass and a Sunfish on flyfishing gear using the Foam Rubber Spider Variant. Bass went 11.5" and 8.5" in size; Sunfish went 7.5". Pictures posted below.

Bethany Ridge Park - August 10, 2008

Went across the street from Bethany Lakes this afternoon to fish Bethany Ridge Park. Continued to flyfish using only a Foam Rubber Spider Variant.

Caught four Bass ranging from a 4" fingerling to 10.5" in size. Also, caught a Sunfish. Most were caught in the feeder creek/drainage canal that runs into the main pond.

Bethany Lakes and a Foam Rubber Spider Variant

Fished Bethany Lakes this morning. Decided to flyfish using only a Foam Rubber Spider Variant. Pictures posted below are a sampling of the fish caught this morning.

The two Bass went 12.5" and 19" in size. The larger one weighed in at 3.5 lbs. Most of the fish were caught within 10 feet of then bank. Not a bad morning!

More Quick Trips - August 9, 2008

Made a brief stop at Bob Woodruff Park in Plano this afternoon. Lake was low and murky. Decided not to fish it. Opted to fish Spring Creek as it runs along Chisolm Trail in Plano.

Caught small Sunfish on a Prince Nymph Fly. Did see a Gar striking on the surface in the creek as it got dark. Sampling of this afternoon's catch posted below.

Quick Trips - August 9, 2008

Checked out a small pond at Shawnee Park in Plano. Had a couple of strikes on a Streamer but did not connect. Others fishing the morning noted catches of Bluegill. Will have to try again, promising location with cover and a fountain keeping the pond well aerated.

Went down the road to Harrington Park and fished the creek. Caught a number of Sunfish and observed several Carp laying low in the water.

Headed back to Allen and sampled the creek that runs under Exchange Parkway and along Watters Creek Running Trail. Shallow water but active and aggressive Sunfish hitting a Sponge Rubber Grasshopper Variant.

Catfish at Bethany Ridge and Bethany Lakes - August 1, 2008

Fished Bethany Ridge Park Pond and caught small Catfish. Used Bread Bait and fished from the pier that overlooks the pond. Went across the street to fish Bethany Lakes' Main Pond. Caught larger Catfish ranging from 15" to 23" in size using Bread Bait. Pictures posted below.
