Rainy Day on the Guadalupe....

Fished the Guadalupe River at Lazy L&L Campground in hopes of a Rainbow Trout.  Started the morning by working an area called the Devil's Playground.  Things looked promising but ended up striking out.  Worked a Guadalupana, an Olive Wooley Bugger, and Midges without luck.  Someone else had a nice one take an Olive Wooley Bugger but it ended up breaking off.

Took a break around noon and stopped by the Reel Fly Shop for some suggestions... bought Trout Beads and went back after lunch to Lazy L&L.  Nice couple managing the store suggested trying up river.  Gave it a shot and had a few "ticks" on the Trout Beads but no hook ups.

Decided to go back to the Devil's Playground and work the upper pool and shallows.  Saw a couple of Trout feeding on (what looked like) midges.  But, could not get them to take a fishing fly.

Moved downriver and started fishing the fast water by the steps.  Tied on a Guadalupana (a bigger one than the one we used earlier) and started swinging it in the current.  Finally had a hook up; a Rainbow Trout that went about 14" in size. Released it as it did not meet the 18" minimum for that section of the river.

Long day in the cold rain fishing but still had a great time!

  1. I'd love to start fly fishing, It looks cool and I see people catch a lot of fish. I've only fished for bass my entire life. Which decent starter fly setup would you suggest for maybe $100.

    Thank you.

  2. Look for sales at Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops. Cabelas offers a combo for ~$79.99. It comes rigged with flyline and a leader which keeps the price well under $100. Also, at times Cabelas as dropped the price... normally after Christmas/New Year.

    1. Great to hear! This time of year may be a little rough for Bass to strike because of the cold temps but do recommend the following fishing flies for sunfish/bass... Size 8, 10 & 12 Olive Wooley Bugger, Size 10 and 12 Foam Spider (White and/or Yellow), Size 12 and Size 14 Elk Hair Caddis, Size 8 and 10 Clouser Minnow, and then when you get a chance tying flies, go with a Size 10 and Size 12 Guadalupana. For sunfish, also go with various nymphs in Size 12 - 18... with a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph (GRHEN) being a good one to start with as sunfish and bluegill will take them and this time of year when ponds are stocked with Trout, the GRHEN will do double duty taking Trout.

Hope this helps and gets things started....

One last note, when the temps get cold, we will typically fish an Olive Wooley Bugger or a Guadalupana that is close to the size of the bait fish in the pond we are fishing. We will fish it under a strike indicator varying the depth from 4' to 6' and work deeper areas like channels and drop offs near culverts. We fish them slooooowly, with a slight twitch, setting the hook at the slightest indication of a bite. If things warm up while out there, and we see bass chasing bait fish near the banks, we remove the indicator and fish the fishing fly on a steady retrieve.

      Good luck and good fishing!
