Two Bass and a Bluegill

Warmer temps and a chance to break away from work this evening.  Went to Bethany and fished with flyfishing gear.  Caught a little Bluegill on a Damsel Fly, lost the fly to a snag, then switched to a Deer Hair Popper.  Caught two Bass.  No Bruisers but still a good time fishing!

Two Sunfish on a Deer Hair Bug

Late start but made it to Bethany this evening.  Slow go,... only two Sunfish on a Deer Hair Bug. Had several good hits from what looked like Bass but did not hook up.

Red/White Deer Hair Popper Worked This Evening!

Went back to Bethany this evening to test out a new fishing fly... did not produce a hit.  Switched to a Red/White Deer Hair Popper that we picked up at Cabelas.  Caught an 8" Shellcracker and five Bass.  Like the topwater action especially on flyfishing gear!

Restocked Supplies From Cabelas, Then Struck Out at Bethany... Rain/Lightning?

Finally made it to Cabelas and picked up a Hula Popper to replace the one lost the other day.

Also, picked up a Heddon Lucky 13, a Deer Hair Bug, and some fly-tying material.

Then, ran down to Bethany and fished the Lucky 13.

Had one decent strike but no hookup.  Called it quits early because of the lightning and the downpour!

Morning At The Village....

Fished at the Village this morning.  Slow action but did get three Bass.  No Bruisers... did get a lot of missed strikes though.  Caught them all on an Olive/Red Deer Hair Bug.  Tied it with a Size 4 Hook.  May need to go to a Size 6 like the Red and White Popper that we picked up at Cabelas.

Stoney Hollow Park... Bass Go For the Surface Popper, Too!

Stopped by Stoney Hollow Park in Plano to fish the pond.  Had not been there in a while but was pleasantly surprised that the Bass were liking the Surface Popper, too!  Only bad thing... lost the Red and White Deer Hair Bug after a Bass wrapped the line around a snag.  Good to have the back up Green and White Deer Hair Bug.

Deer Hair Popper Works Out Well at Kroger Park!

Went to Kroger Park this evening and fished with the Deer Hair Popper.  Surface action was good with Bass readily taking the fly!  Caught four but missed more... slow reflexes, bad eyes, aging,... any excuse for missing a strike.  Lotta fun regardless!

Six Bass This Evening On a Deer Hair Bug Surface (Popper)!

Went to the Village and fished the pond behind In-And-Out Burger.  Another opportunity to try the Red and White Deer Hair Bug (Surface Popper).  Caught six Bass; no Bruisers this round.  But, was fun again to catch them on the fly!

Caught One Skinny Bass on a Surface Popper Last Night.

Late post... caught one skinny Bass that struck a Surface Popper we picked up at Cabelas yesterday.  Went with Red and White Deer Hair in Size 6.  Took it on a slow retrieve with a lot of starts and stops.  Had several other strikes but were likely little Bass and Bluegill nipping at the Popper.  Fun to catch them on the surface, fun to catch them on flyfishing gear, ready for more fun when a Bruiser takes the Popper!

Flies Did Well At the Village This Morning....

Fished the Village in Allen this morning; went with the flyrod and fishing flies.  Tough go again with the wind but managed to get a few casts in.  Caught seven Bass and one Bluegill.  Lost a Bruiser Bass though; fought it for about a minute before it shook the fly off!  Oh well, better luck next time.

PS:  Used a BH Olive Wooley Bugger, a Deer Hair Bug, and a Damsel Fly.  Deer Hair Bug seemed to be the fly of choice this round.

Fished Bethany Lakes this morning and caught the usual suspects... Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish. Used an Olive Damsel Fly, then  Deer Hair Bug, and closed with a White Foam Rubber Grasshopper Variant. Fun stuff!

Pair of Deer Hair Bugs To Replace Today's Lost One

Tied a pair of Deer Hair Bugs to replace the one lost today.  One has hackles for a tail and works well on Bass; the other uses marabou for the tail and (hopefully) targets Bruiser Bluegills!  Hope to find out later this week if it does!

Back to Bethany, Again... One Bass and a Lot More Missed Strikes

Back to our favorite local pond(s) for more Bass action.  Unfortunately, ended the trip with only one Bass.  Missed a lot more (about 10 total).  Worse... lost the Deer Hair Bug.  So, time to tie more.  For now, here is another short video clip of today's outing.

Colder Day Today, Only One Little Bass This Round.

Tied another Deer Hair Bug to replace the one lost yesterday.  Then, went back to Bethany Lakes to try it out on the Bass.  Colder day compared to yesterday.  Fish were not active, save for one that struck the Deer Hair Bug!

Here is a short video clip of the trip and a couple of pictures at the end showing the Deer Hair Bug used today....

Shadow Lakes and Bethany Lakes Today.

Another trip to Shadow Lakes for another go at the Bass. Tough go but managed to catch two Bass and three Sunfish.

Went on to Bethany Lakes for more Bass action. Caught one on the Deer Hair Bug, then lost it. Switched to the Yellow Grasshopper Variant and caught one more Bass!

Deer Hair Bug - Version 2

Did well the other day fishing the Deer Hair Bug for Bass.  Unfortunately, lost the fly to a snag, so it is back to the fly tying table....  Made a few adjustments to the pattern.  Hope it works, else will fall back to the original pattern.

The original pattern (Version 1) was tied with Olive Deer Hair, Two Olive Hackles, and Olive Thread on a Size 8 Streamer Hook.  Version 2 added Olive Marabou, Centipede Sililegs, and White Flashabou.

Will try it out hopefully this week,....  More to come!

Out and About, Checked Out the Feeder Creek to Shahow Lakes and then Bethany Lakes....

Checked out the feeder creek to Shadow Lakes.... Fished a BH Olive Wooley Bugger using the Tenkara Rod. Was a tough go with some skittish Bass in the shallows. Did manage to catch a Bluegill. Starting to see them nesting, Bluegill action should really pick up latter part of March and into April! Fun stuff catching them on Dry Flies, Poppers, and other surface lures.

Switched the Tenkara Rod for the Fly Rod and went to Bethany Lakes for a go at the Bass. Bass were in the shallows hovering near their spawning beds.... No strikes on the Wooley Bugger, one Bass on a Yellow Grasshopper, and the rest were caught using an Olive Deer Hair Bug. Steady action with more misses than landed. Hated losing the Deer Hair Bug; need to tie more than one next time.

No pictures this trip; instead, took some short video clips and pasted them into one YouTube video. It won't win any Oscars....

Quick Trip To Bethany Lakes Gets a Bluegill and a Bass!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening to try out the Deer Hair Bug and other fishing flies.  Action was slow but did manage to catch a Bluegill and a Bass.  Bluegill was a little scrapper; Bass put up a good fight on the fly rod.  Estimated size was about 15" in length!  Fun stuff...  even made a short video of today's catch!

Struck Out This Evening....

Struck out this evening at Bethany Lakes.  Tied a Deer Hair Bug in Olive in hopes of topwater action on the Tenkara Rod.  Several strikes but no solid hook ups.  Switched to the Purple Clouser Variant; had one strike but did not set the hook in time!  Bass were in the shallows and actively working the surface in the Back Pond at dusk, just did not want the pattern offered.  Better luck next round!
