Tough Round at Frisco Saturday (Feb 15, 2015)

Late start Saturday for Nuclaroche and I. We planned to fish Frisco Commons for Rainbow Trout that morning but I was sidetracked by work and then some early "Spring" cleaning of the office. By the time all was done, it was late afternoon.

Around 4PM, we made it to Frisco and fished till after sunset. Nuclaroche hooked up with one Rainbow Trout using PowerBait. I stuck with different dry flies trying to hook the Trout that were rising on the surface, and then eventually switched to the Micro Fly Rod.

A quick check to match the hatch did not help either. I had caught one of the bugs flying around, and then tried several fishing flies that looked like it. No luck!

Still had fun catching little Bluegill on the Micro Fly Rod!

Near Deere Goes to School This Round

Decided to fish Plano East Senior High School's catch and release ponds to get some practice fishing a Near Deere Fishing Fly under a strike indicator. Had a number of missed strikes using this rig on the Lower Mountain Fork River. So, better get some practice in (also, a good excuse to go fishing!).

Started out fishing areas that normally hold Bass but did not hook up. Then, had a Catfish take the fishing fly, followed by a Sunfish, and then another Catfish. Kept at it for a little longer, and hooked into a third Catfish that put up a really nice fight on the Five-Weight Fly Rod.

Fun stuff!

Slow Action This Round

Start the 4th of July Weekend with a quick trip to Bethany Lakes.  Had some rain earlier in the day; water levels were up and fish were feeding in the shallows. Things started of with a missed hook set, and then no hits for a while.  Then, lucked into a little Bluegill, and a couple of Bass.  All went for a Foam Damsel Fly!

Missed Two, Caught One on a Lefty Deceiver This Round

Fished Bethany Lakes this round. Brought the Five Weight Fly Rod and used a Lefty Deceiver. Had a nice one take the fishing fly but lost it when the knot broke. Need to pay better attention to knots! Kept fishing and had one take; was briefly on the hook before it came off. Kept at it, and finally caught one this round. Not a Bruiser but still counts!

More Fun Fishing

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Brought the Five Weight Fly Rod but this time replaced the reel with a 4/5 Weight Echo Ion. Liked the 8/10 Weight for the Switch Rod; decided to get the smaller size reel for the Five Weight!  Liked it, too!

Started fishing with a Foam Damsel Fly and caught Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass.  Did lose one to a decent Bass that broke the tippet.  Later, switched to a Tube Popper Fly.  Missed several nice looking fish; too slow on the hookset.  But, did get two Bass!

Fun stuff!

Tube Damsel Fly Worked Well, Then Switched to Bread for Bait

Started out catching fish with a Tube Damsel Fly. Caught two Bass and two Catfish using a Tube Damsel Fly.  One Catfish went about 17.5".

Then, switched to bread for bait and caught a few nice Catfish. Most went 17"-18" with a few small ones mixed in.  Posted videos but did mis-count the number caught using bread... was not nine Catfish, think it was eight. No matter; had a fun time using what we had - a fly rod and freelining bread.

Only Two This Round

Only two this round but did have several missed hook sets and break offs.  Had tied two Tube Damsel Flies - one Olive and one Purple. Was able to hook and land a 17.5" Catfish with the Olive one, and then lost the fishing fly to a break off.

Fished the Purple Damsel Fly and had several more missed hook sets, and then had a Bruiser break the line. Out of Tube Damsel Flies, switched to COAF Damsel Flies.  More missed hook sets, and then noticed people feeding ducks with bread.

Soon after the Catfish showed, so put up the fishing fly and switched to freelining bread. Good thing... ended up catching Catfish #2; measured 22"!  Fun stuff!

Steady Action at Bethany with a Grasshopper!

Went to Bethany Friday evening for another round of fishing.  Slow at first but once we found the pattern, it was steady action the remainder of the time.

Algae and other "greenery" is growing, so lures and fishing flies tend to foul more.  Started out with a COAF Damsel Fly and had a few follow it but no takers.  Switched to a Foam Grasshopper and hooked up with several Bass.  Caught a few, lost a few, and then bite quit near sunset.

A "hatch" was going on, and Bass and Bluegill were feeding on the bugs.  A quick switch to a Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook enabled a few more hook ups.

Fun stuff!

Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook Made a Difference This Round!

Cold front came and changed the pattern slightly.  Had a couple of Bass strike at the Purple COAF Damsel Fly but messed up on the hook set; did manage to land one.  Not a Bruiser but still counts!

And then, noticed bugs flying about and ripples in the water where something was feeding on them.  Seen this happen in the past after a cold front passes and things start to warm up, a hatch occurs and then the Bass and Bluegill start feeding on them.

Good thing we had a Griffith's Gnat Variant handy.  It's the one we tied using a Caddis Hook. Made a difference this round, catching a few, missing a few, having fun with all of them!

Bethany Lakes For More Fishing!

Rain and more rain this morning. Decided to put on rain gear, and give Bethany Lakes a try. Good thing... caught Bass, a couple of Bruiser Catfish, and then lost a big one (think it was a Catfish).

Bent the fly rod double; same fly rod that was used to land a 6 pound bass several years ago. The Bass did not bend the fly rod near as much as the one that was lost today!  Fun stuff... good to know Bruisers are still lurking in the area.

The Bass, one of the Catfish, and the lost fish took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  The other Catfish went for a COAF San Juan Worm Ball. Fun stuff!

Bethany Lakes for a Round!

Went back out for another round of fishing; this time went to Bethany Lakes.  Having run out this morning, tied a purple COAF Damsel Fly to restock the fly box.  This time used red tying thread instead of olive.  Not sure if it made a difference but did catch eight Bass this round. Fun stuff!

Stoney Hollow Park Again This Morning

Decided to fish Stoney Hollow again.  Same setup as yesterday - Five Weight Rod and a COAF Damsel Fly. Windy conditions but the action was steady.

Caught three Bass and a Sunfish, and then had video camera issues.  Ended up erasing the video; User error!

No worries; kept fishing and caught two Crappie and a Bass and Bluegill using the Purple COAF Damsel Fly in size 12.  And then, lost the fishing fly to a snag on the backcast.

Switched to an Olive COAF Damsel Fly in size 10 and caught more Bass and Bluegill. Not sure how many were caught and released as well as threw the hook; no matter... had a great time fishing!

PS: Need to tie more; down to one Olive COAF Damsel Fly and no Purple ones.  Gave one away to another fisherman; hope it helps him catch a Bass or two!

More Fishing Today!

Checked out the Feeder Creek that runs into Shadow Lakes this morning.  Saw Bass on beds; tough fishing with fly fishing gear as the brush and tree limbs tend to snag the fly line.

Did get one Bass to take a COAF Damsel Fly that was crawled slowly across its bed.  But, ended up losing it when it ran for a brush pile and broke off.

Later in the afternoon, fished the pond behind In-N-Out Burger and struck out!

Moved on to the Catch and Release Ponds at Plano East Senior High School.  After an hour without a strike using various fishing flies, went to the Size 12 COAF Damsel Fly after noticing small fry hugging close to the banks.

Worked the undercut banks and was able to hook and land three Bass.  Fun stuff...!

Nice Weather; Went Fishing!

Really nice weather, so... went fishing.  Slow action but did manage a little Bass, a couple of Bluegill, and a decent Shellcracker!  Used a Grasshopper to get them this time... Fun stuff!

Two Bass at Another Pond This Round

Been awhile since we fished the pond behind In-N-Out Burger.  Tried the Craft Fur Fishing Fly and caught two Bass and lost three others.  Cooler temps but was good to see the Bass were still biting!  No Bruisers but still fun!

Different Fishing Fly This Round

Fished Bethany this evening using the five weight fly rod again.  But, this time went with a different fishing fly this round.  It's made from Craft Fur; not sure what it's called... so we are going to keep it simple and say it is a Craft Fur Fishing Fly.   Fished the Main Pond and caught six Bass; last three were caught after sunset in the dark!  Another fishing fly to keep handy for Bass!

Rainy Day But The Bite Was Good!

Been raining today but saw a break in the weather this afternoon. Tied a fishing fly that we noticed on the Internet.  Was looking for something that imitated the 2" Bait Fish that the Bass are feeding on.  It's a Streamer Variant that we modified using material on hand.

Caught six Bass; lost four others.  These were bigger than the ones we normally have been catching!  Largest one went 18.5".  Weighed 3.5 pounds using the scale that another fisherman let us use!

Really liking this pattern, may need to tie more than one... just in case another "Tree Fish" takes it away.

Another Round at Bethany with the Fly Rod!

Went with the fly rod Saturday morning.  Fished the main pond with a Lefty Deceiver and caught four Bass.  Lost the Deceiver to a "Tree Fish"; switched to a Foam Rubber Spider Variant after no luck with a Wooley Bugger.  Caught several more Bass. Fun stuff especially liking the top water action!

Fly Rod This Round!

Brought the five weight fly rod this evening to Bethany.  Used a Guadalupana to get a couple of Sunfish and a Bluegill.  Tried a Foam Grasshopper Variant and had a couple of strikes but missed the hook set.  Switched to a Lefty Deceiver and caught several Bass and a Sunfish! Also, saw one fisherman catch and release a nice looking Catfish caught using bread for bait. Nice Catfish!

Back to Bethany this Round!

Had a lot of fun fishing Galveston this past weekend; would like to go back for another round.  Till then, it's back to Bethany this round!  Fished with the Five Weight Fly Rod and used a Lefty Deceiver and a Grasshopper to catch a few fish. Today's total - five Bass and two Bluegill!
