Steady Action at Bethany with a Grasshopper!

Went to Bethany Friday evening for another round of fishing.  Slow at first but once we found the pattern, it was steady action the remainder of the time.

Algae and other "greenery" is growing, so lures and fishing flies tend to foul more.  Started out with a COAF Damsel Fly and had a few follow it but no takers.  Switched to a Foam Grasshopper and hooked up with several Bass.  Caught a few, lost a few, and then bite quit near sunset.

A "hatch" was going on, and Bass and Bluegill were feeding on the bugs.  A quick switch to a Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook enabled a few more hook ups.

Fun stuff!

Another Round at Bethany with the Fly Rod!

Went with the fly rod Saturday morning.  Fished the main pond with a Lefty Deceiver and caught four Bass.  Lost the Deceiver to a "Tree Fish"; switched to a Foam Rubber Spider Variant after no luck with a Wooley Bugger.  Caught several more Bass. Fun stuff especially liking the top water action!

20 More Fish on the Fly at Bethany!

Went with the fly rod again and headed to Bethany this evening.  Was a tough go with all the algae; much different than yesterday!  Did manage to catch 20 fish this round; caught them on a Grasshopper, Dry Fly, and a Globug.  No Bruisers; still a lot of fun!  No action shots, just pictures of fish. PS: Met TFF's Future Biologist; was great meeting!  Only if the algae was not so bad....

20 Bluegill/Sunfish and 5 Bass Yesterday...

Went with a Fly Rod yesterday when we fished Bethany Lakes.  Question came up on the Texas Fishing Forum about fly fishing at Bethany.  Overall, we tend to get more strikes when fly fishing; yesterday's outing seemed the case compared to the Senkos we used on Monday. Caught 20 Bluegill and Sunfish and 5 Bass.  The Bluegill and Sunfish tended to be small... not as big as we saw earlier when they were on their beds at least in the Back Pond.  No Bruiser Bass either but they did put up a nice fight on a Four Weight; even got a few action shots!

Bethany This Evening; Went with the Grasshopper.

Tied a White Caddis Dry Fly and fished Bethany this evening in hopes of another go at the Bluegill.  Turned out they did not want it; however, two Bass and two Bluegill went for the Foam Rubber Spider Variant (or Grasshopper) that worked yesterday.  Also missed two Bass as we closed out this round.  Fun stuff!

Bluegill and Bass at Bethany This Evening

Tied a Caddis Antron Nymph and headed to Bethany Lakes for a go at the Bluegill.  As it turned out, the Bass preferred a White Guadalupana instead.  Missed one Bass, and then caught three Bass from the Main Pond.  Then, switched to a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant and started catching Bluegill and one more Bass on the surface!  Great top water action!

Bethany Creek, Then Bethany Lakes

Short video clip of today's outing.  Fished Bethany Creek's pond and caught a Bass on a Foam Rubber Spider Variant.  Hit the fishing fly hard while it sat motionless on the surface.

Then, went down the road to Bethany Lakes to fish the Lower Pond by the Recreation Center.  Caught a few Bluegill just before dark.  Fish kept hitting well after sunset as well.

Fun Stuff!

PS:  Been asked what fishing fly we are using.  We call it a Foam Rubber Spider Variant.  Very easy fishing fly to tie.  Here is a video of instructions on how we tie them.

Bluegill and a Bass at Kroger Park

Late start today,.... Went to Kroger Park again after tying another Foam Spider Variant.  Caught several Bluegill, then lost the fishing fly to a snag.  Went with a Guadalupana and had zero strikes until a little Bass hit it as it got dark.  No Bruisers but still beats working!

More Bluegill at Kroger Park

Returned to Kroger Park yesterday and brought a different fishing fly to fish the surface - Foam Rubber Spider Variant in Size12.  Worked a nesting area with the fly and managed to hookup with a few before breaking off to a snag.  Oh well,... will have tie another one and come back another time!

10 Bass This AM at Bethany.

Water levels are up in the Main and Back Ponds at Bethany.  Gave it a go this morning fishing with Flyfishing Gear.  Caught two Bass on a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant, and then eight more on an unweighted Olive Wooley Bugger under a strike indicator.  Bass were small with the largest going about 13" and all were caught less than ten feet from the bank.

Purple Damsel Fly, Foam Rubber Spider, and the Tenkara Rod,... Great Combo!

Been tough to breakaway from work these last few weeks.  Luckily, was able to flex the Tenkara Rod this evening and catch (and release) a fair amount of fish... Bluegill, Sunfish, Shellcrackers, and Bass!  Went with the Purple Damsel Fly, then the Foam Rubber Spider.  And, fished with the Tenkara Rod only.  Keeping it simple so as to focus on fishing rather than the gear!

May's One Fishing Fly Challenge Closed Out; Field Team selects "The Color Purple" for June!

The COAF Field Team closed out May's One Fishing Fly Challenge with Fshng84 taking the top spot.  Bass that went just over 15" was caught using Foam Rubber Spider Variants.  There were larger Bass missed, lost, or caught on other fishing flies but overall the Team feels May went well.

Moving on to June, "The Color Purple" was chosen for June's One Fishing Fly Challenge.  That is, any fishing fly can be used as long as it has purple in the pattern.  So, tie on your favorite fishing fly, add some purple and you are ready to go!

Good Luck and Good Fishing!

One Bass and One Sunfish On a Grasshopper Today.

A Bass and a Sunfish caught today at Bethany Lakes on a Foam Rubber Spider Variant - Grasshopper.  Bass went about 12.5" in size (camera angle makes it look shorter); holding out for a bigger Bass before sending to May's One Fishing Fly Challenge.

Foam Rubber Spider Variant - Grasshopper Instructions

Slideshow of steps for tying the Foam Rubber Spider Variant - Grasshopper pattern.  The legs can get tricky, suggest checking out the YouTube Video for tying the Foam Spider.  Like the way it shows how to tie on the rubber legs!

Sending a picture of it and two of the 12" Bass pictures to May's One Fishing Fly Challenge.

Weighted Olive Wooley Bugger Variant

Having lost my last BH Olive Wooley Bugger to a "Tree Fish", decided to tie one using material on-hand. Ran out of Bead Heads, so opted to use lead-free wire to weight the fishing fly. No Olive Dacron, so went with Black Dacron. Did have Olive Chennile, Marabou, and Hackles, added Pearl Flashabou for the extra "teaser".

Not sure how this one will do compared to the BH Olive Wooley Bugger. May be a winner like the Foam Rubber Spider Variant that worked well in the Spring and Summer two years ago. Will post results; hopefully soon!

Two Bass on a Wooley Bugger, Two Bass on a Foam Rubber Spider Variant

Caught four Bass at Bethany Lakes this morning. Two were caught on an Olive Wooley Bugger in the Main Pond. One of which was a little fingerling. The other two were caught in the Upper Pond using a White Foam Rubber Spider Variant. Saw a number of Bass in the shallows. Mainly small ones but there was one nice sized one actively feeding; just was not interested in a fishing fly!
