Pond Fishing Fun on a 4WT Fly Rod

Plan was to fish the local pond using Bait Finesse Gear and ultralight lures. Switched to a Fly Fishing when my inline spinner kept fouling on the algae.

Started out with a Damsel Fly and had several strikes but no hook ups. Went to a Guadalupana in a smaller size hook compared to the Damsel Fly. Did better!

Worked mainly the areas near the bank as the water level in the pond was high from recent rains. Did work a more open area in the back pond to see what was cruising the area.

Caught most of the fish on a fast, short pull retrieve. Did get one Bass to take the Damsel Fly worked in its bed but as luck would have it, camera battery ran out.

Fun times fly fishing with nine Bluegill and four Bass caught and released!

Now if only the wind would calm down and we could get back to kayak fishing!

Good luck and good fishing!

Micro Fly Rod Fishing | Two Piece Micro Fly Rod Quick Trip

Was out this morning and had saw a chance to fish the feeder creek at the local pond. Good thing I keep the Micro Fly Rod handy… this one is the two piece micro fly rod made from a broken 8wt fly rod.

Saw a nice bass in the culvert that runs from the feeder creek to the pond. Also, saw several smaller bass but none wanted to bite. Did lose a couple of Bluegill and land one Bluegill that went for the Guadalupana.

Did call it quits… too cold, but just in time to miss the snow that came in shortly after!

Tough Go at Frisco Commons Today

Finally able to wet a line today.  Fished Frisco Commons this afternoon; the pond was stocked this morning and the City held its annual kid fishing derby.

Tough go today.  Fish seemed in shock, staying near the bank and were lock jawed at times.

After several looks at a Guadalupana, finally had one take the fishing fly.  Switch Rod worked out well; was able to make long switch cast (and roll cast) with ease.  Too bad distance did not matter today.

Then, switched to an Ultralight Rig and a Silver Kastmaster; had tried a Gold Super Duper, a Copper Super Duper, and a White Roostertail without a bite.  Looked like silver was the color of choice today.

Tried casting the spoon, used a steady retrieve, a stop and go retrieve, as well as a count down before reeling in.  No luck... what worked?  Jigging the lure up and down like when ice fishing. As a school would pass, one or two would show interest, the remainder would keep going by.

Later, jigging up and down, and then slowly moving the lure away would get one or two to break from where the school was "holed" up, and then a light strike and hook up would follow.

Fun stuff... was different seeing so many Trout so close to the bank; even got some underwater video of a school or two going by!

Another HubPages Article... COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly

Had a question from one of our Readers about the Guadalupana pattern we use.  Decided to post a HubPages article - "COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly", to provide more details on the variant of the Guadalupana that the Team uses.

It's smaller than the original pattern but seems to be a good fishing fly for the little Stocker Rainbow Trout we see in our area.

Do check it out when you get a chance!

Rainy Day on the Guadalupe....

Fished the Guadalupe River at Lazy L&L Campground in hopes of a Rainbow Trout.  Started the morning by working an area called the Devil's Playground.  Things looked promising but ended up striking out.  Worked a Guadalupana, an Olive Wooley Bugger, and Midges without luck.  Someone else had a nice one take an Olive Wooley Bugger but it ended up breaking off.

Took a break around noon and stopped by the Reel Fly Shop for some suggestions... bought Trout Beads and went back after lunch to Lazy L&L.  Nice couple managing the store suggested trying up river.  Gave it a shot and had a few "ticks" on the Trout Beads but no hook ups.

Decided to go back to the Devil's Playground and work the upper pool and shallows.  Saw a couple of Trout feeding on (what looked like) midges.  But, could not get them to take a fishing fly.

Moved downriver and started fishing the fast water by the steps.  Tied on a Guadalupana (a bigger one than the one we used earlier) and started swinging it in the current.  Finally had a hook up; a Rainbow Trout that went about 14" in size. Released it as it did not meet the 18" minimum for that section of the river.

Long day in the cold rain fishing but still had a great time!

Tying Fishing Flies...

Been busy tying fishing flies to re-stock the fishing vest.  Started yesterday tying various fishing flies as well as re-trying some beat up Grasshoppers, and then closed out the effort with today tying several Olive Wooley Buggers and San Juan Worm Variants... Worm Clusters!  Cannot wait to give them a try!

On The Guadalupe This Round

Had a chance to check out a place we never had fished yesterday.  Heard promising things about fishing the Guadalupe River at the Rio Raft Access Point.  It's in the special restriction section that has an 18" Minimum, 1 Trout per day limit and only artificials can be used.  No worries though, caught zero Trout but still had a good time.  Action was slow with only a little Bass and two Longear Sunfish caught and released.  Even better that we were the only ones fishing that section at times!

Fly Rod This Round!

Brought the five weight fly rod this evening to Bethany.  Used a Guadalupana to get a couple of Sunfish and a Bluegill.  Tried a Foam Grasshopper Variant and had a couple of strikes but missed the hook set.  Switched to a Lefty Deceiver and caught several Bass and a Sunfish! Also, saw one fisherman catch and release a nice looking Catfish caught using bread for bait. Nice Catfish!

Fished Russell Creek Park Pond in the heat of the day.  Was a tough go with a few hits using the Guadalupana and a Dry Fly.  Then, switched to the Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and a slow retrieve.  Caught a number of Bluegill and Sunfish and several fingerling Bass.  Overall, was a fun time!

Quick Trip to Bethany This Morning

Only had a little time this morning to fish due to other commitments.  So, we headed to Bethany for a quick trip.  Was glad it was a really nice day; was glad the Bass were biting, too!

Caught four Bass using Senkos and one using a Crankbait.  One of the Bass had a fishing fly in it's upper jaw - a Guadalupana!  Fun stuff!

More Fun Fishing Before the Front Arrived

Headed to Bethany with the Four Weight Fly Rod to fish a round before the cold front arrived.  Caught seven Bass and one Sunfish on fishing flies.  One Bass and the Sunfish went for the Guadalupana.  The other Bass went for a White BH Wooley Bugger, White Wooley Bugger, or a White Damsel Fly.  Fun stuff!

Six Bass and a Bluegill This Round

Fished Bethany this evening.  Caught six Bass and one Bluegill this round.  Three Bass went for Senkos, one Bass and a Bluegill went for a Purple Damsel Fly, and two Bass went for the Guadalupana!  Missed others that came off the hook while bringing them in; regardless, was another fun time on a really nice evening.  No action footage this time; just footage of fish.

Tenkara Fishing This Round Gets 25 Fish This Round

Was able to get a round of fishing between the rainstorms today.  Went with the Tenkara Rod and one fishing fly - the White Guadalupana.  So, with a stick, line, and a fishing fly fished the feeder creek that runs by Harrington Park in Plano and the pond at Suncreek Park in Allen.  Caught 25 fish this round; no Bruisers but still had a lot of fun!

Frisco Bite Was Good This Evening

Made a quick trip to Frisco Commons Ponds for the evening bite.  Trout were rising and schools were feeding on insects landing on the water.  Caught two before it got dark using the Guadalupana,  Switched to Dry Flies and could not get a strike.  Went back to the Guadalupana and caught one more... Fun Stuff!

One More Go at Waterloo....

Fished Waterloo Park Pond today.  The pond received its last Trout Stocking for the Season last weekend, decided to check on the Trout action before the weather warms.  Good decision, Zeke and Fshng84 managed a limit each.  Zeke opted for Powerbait; Fshng84 opted for the Guadalupana.

Fun stuff! No Bruisers like we saw on the Blue River yesterday but it was still a fun time! Even did some catch and release fishing and got a chance at some roll casting practice; liked how the wind helped make the roll cast look easy!

Later on, ran to Frisco and braved the windy conditions to try some catch and release fishing.  Things started slow but the action picked up as it got dark, caught and released four and lost several more while bringing them in.  All went for the Guadalupana as well!
