TPWD Answers Our Question about Shad!

We like using Shad for bait but at times cannot purchase them because the local bait store is out of stock. This is why we like to catch our own plus it saves us money – cost of the cast net and time and effort to catch them, etc…

However, due to restrictions related to aquatic invasive species and the transfer from one body of water to another, we have followed Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) regulations that limit using Shad for bait to the same body of water where they were caught.

Our understanding was the same body of water limitation was for live, fresh, and frozen shad. For clarification, we contacted Texas Parks and Wildlife Department via their online “Submit a Question” form.

The question we asked and the answer provided are shown in the picture below!

Looks like we can catch Shad from one lake, remove any of the water with the fish, using a net to move the fish from one container to another so no water is transferred from lake to lake!

PS: We did not ask about transferring live Shad as we prefer to limit using live Shad to the body of water we caught them from to avoid the risk of transferring aquatic invasive species.

Jug Lining This Morning

Did some Jug Lining this morning at Lake Lavon. Put in at Little Ridge Park by the Power Plant.  Baited up with Shad and then waited for about a half-hour before the first bite.

Turned out to be a Catfish that went 20". A few more strikes and missed hook sets, and then had another Catfish take that went just over 22". Then, had a little Catfish strike that we let go. Kept at it for a few more, and managed to get a Catfish that went 19"!

Overall, action was slower than other trips but Catfish seemed larger this time. Fun morning!

Jug Line Fishing on Lake Lavon Saturday Morning

Fished Lake Lavon Saturday morning and caught six Keepers. Largest went 4 pounds; caught them using Shad on Jug Lines!

Really nice morning with lower than normal temperatures for this time of year. Had to move around a little to find Shad for bait, but did find a spot that provided more than enough for this round.

Enjoying the nice weather, and the laid back style of fishing!

Did re-rig the Jug Lines with new line, same ones we posted in an article about Jug Line Fishing. This time, tried stopper knots above and below the drop lines. Seemed to have more hook ups this time!

Bite Was Steady This Morning On Jug Lines at Ticky Creek

Fished Lake Lavon at Ticky Creek this morning. Bite was steady with 15 Keepers; largest went 19" in size. Most went for Shad that we caught by the boat ramp. Did catch a couple of Gaspergou; used one for cut bait. Ended catching several on cut bait also! Fun stuff with most caught in 11'-12' of water with hooks set 1' and 2' from the bottom.

Bank Fishing This Round... Only One Little Catfish

Went bank fishing this round. Back to Ticky Creek Park where we fished with jug lines yesterday. Used surf casting gear to get out where we placed the jug lines. Wanted to see if the bite was good from the bank. Had a lot of missed strikes, but did catch one little Catfish.

More Jug Line Fishing Today

Back to the Lake Lavon for more jug line fishing today. Boat ramp was closed at Ticky Creek but was able to launch from shore and get the jug lines set! Caught three Catfish, lost another one, and had several misses. Had a fun time.

Only One Keeper This Morning!

Fished Clear Lake this morning with the kayak.  Tried drifting for Catfish with Shad; had two nibbles but no hook ups.  Switched to a Slab and Jig Rig and had one take but failed to set the hook well.

Kept at it; a White Bass struck but was not a Keeper. Went another 30"; another struck.  It was a Keeper.  Only two White Bass this round with only one Keeper. Still a fun time!

Cast Net... for Shad

Went to Clear Lake Park at Lavon yesterday.  Rain was looming in the distance, decided to bring the cast net and catch some Shad for bait.  Found that one of the two boat ramps was closed.  Luckily, the other remained open, so we were able to cast our net and catch a few Shad before we called it a trip!

Denison Today

Fished Denison Dam today.  Hot temps and slow action were the case this trip.  Managed to catch a few Catfish and several little Stripers.  Interesting to have the Stripers go for Chicken Livers!  Later in the afternoon, the power plant started generating, really clouded the water with the lake "turning over" - water was cloudy, green, and smelled like sulfur.  Still had fun catching them!

More Than One This Round

Set two Trot Lines out last night.  Had only caught one Catfish last round.  This time caught five Catfish - three we kept for Dinner and two that we released because they were too small.  Used Shrimp and Chicken Livers for bait.  The Shrimp seemed to work better than the Chicken Livers.  Better to have gone with Shad for bait but had a tough time catching them in our cast net.  After picking up the Trot Lines, did a little Jug Lining; had a hit or two but no hookups.  Oh well, have enough fillets for Dinner.  Courtesy of the largest of the three Catfish we caught; measured 22" in length!

Back to Denison Dam Tailrace, Again!

Fished Denison Dam today.  Brought some shade and started early.  Stayed till the power plant began generating, then headed home.  Other than a short rain shower, sun was out in force.  Shade made a difference in being able to fish longer.  Too bad we did not get any Bruisers but did have steady action on Stripers, even caught and released a Gaspergou, an undersized Flathead Catfish, and a little Bluecat.  Fun stuff!

More Fishing at Denison Dam Tailrace

Went up the road today for another round of fishing at Denison Dam.  Arrived when the Power Plant was not generating.  Fished the Texas Wall at first, catching small Stripers.  Moved downriver to try our luck.  Did well,... with two of us managing to limit out.  Caught and released most of them, keeping those that were deep hooked.

On the way back, stopped at Dave's Ski and Tackle for something to drink.  Noticed the sign on the microwave.  Must be in a good fishing area!

Also, while filleting our catch, noticed something different in the stomach of one fish.  Looks like a piece of a plastic Curly Tail Grub and a Fluke.  Might need to remember this next round!

Steady Action at Denison Dam

Been a while since we fished Denison.  Had the chance to go today, so we headed up the road. Fished around Noon to about 4PM.  Caught Gaspergou (Freshwater Drum), a Gar, and a few small Stripers. Caught them using frozen Shad.... Fun stuff!
