Guadalupe River Tenkara Fishing | Got Sidetracked... Oops!

While on the road a couple weeks ago, stopped in New Braunfels, Texas and fished the Guadalupe River at the River Access Park.

Opted for the Tenkara Rod as we were on the road and keeping things light. Worked out well, was able to get a quick trip in!

Caught little guys… looked like longear but did get sidetracked when I noticed a lingerie photo shoot was happening downriver.

Took a stroll downriver of course to scout the river for fish… wink, wink, wink!

Tenkara Fishing a Small Pond

Out and about this weekend in Oklahoma. Decided to fish a small pond is in Moore or possibly Norman… could be on the border, too!

Trip started out slow with fish actively feeding on “bugs” on the surface. Also, noticed lots of turtles seemed to show up suspiciously near my fishing fly.

I started fishing the pond’s perimeter using a Foam Grasshopper pattern without success. Then, switched to a Guadalupana fished under a strike indicator.

The fish were barely nibbling… more like “pecking like a chicken” at my offering. Once I added the indicator, I was able to detect strikes but it still did not mean a hook-up.

After multiple missed strikes, I managed to catch a little Bluegill. The remainder of the trip continued to be a strike or a miss but I did catch a few more Bluegill, Sunfish, and a Bass.

The pond looks fairly new, so I anticipate more and bigger fish to come. Will keep this one in my back pocket to fish when I am in the area again.

Cold temps. Not sure what the Team is doing today but the intent is to at least wet a line!

Did tie some Tenkara style fishing flies like the one posted below.  May get a chance to try it out later on!

A Stick, Line, and Fly This Round!

Went simple this afternoon after having fished the morning with a Four Weight Fly Rod. Decided to fish using a Tenkara Rod.  Been some time since we used it; good to see that it still can hold it's own when fishing a pond!  Caught several Bluegill; used a Foam Grasshopper and a Balsa Popper Fly.  Fun stuff!

Simple fishing this evening catching little Bluegill and Sunfish on a Tenkara Rod.  Used a Tenkara Fly until we lost it to a snag. Switched to a Guadalupana without a break in the action... Fun Stuff!

Able to Wet a Line... Opted for the Tenkara Rod!

Been a tough week for the Team to get away and fish.  Did make it this morning to Bethany.  Brought the Tenkara Rod and fished with a Purple Grasshopper Variant; caught about 12 Bluegill and Sunfish.  Then, switched to a Bully's Bluegill Spider and caught more.  Then, ended the outing with a Shellcracker that went for a Elk Hair Caddis!  Fun stuff!

Tenkara This Round at Bethany

Been having fun lately either fishing Lake Lavon or Denison Dam.  Recent rains put a slight delay in fishing but was able to get out yesterday and hit our favorite community lake.  Decided on using the Tenkara Rod and fished Bethany.  Caught a couple of little Bass, a nice Shellcracker, and then little Bluegill.  Used a Damsel Fly until it broke off when a Bruiser struck.  Switched to an Antron Streamer and caught the Shellcracker, then went with a Purple Grasshopper that a Bass and the Bluegill liked!  Fun stuff fishing with minimal gear!

Dusted Off the Tenkara Rod

Went to Plano East Senior High School's pond yesterday and caught a number of fish using fly fishing gear.  Went back today with the Tenkara Rod.  Had a lot of fun catching them despite the windy conditions!

Been awhile since we used the Tenkara Rod.  Had a Reader ask about it.  Sounded like a good idea, especially when the fish were lurking so close to the bank.  Most fish were caught within 5' of the bank.

Guadalupana and Tenkara Rod Gets a Bass at Bethany!

Fished Bethany Lakes' Waterfall this evening.  Only had a little time, so went with the Tenkara Rod and one fishing fly - a Guadalupana like we used on the Guadalupe River last year.  Water level was up from the recent rains and the water was flowing well in the Canal and the Waterfall.  Had a hookup on the second cast - a little Bass.  Good stuff!

Rain Again Today... Backup Plan a Goldfish?

Rained yesterday and again today.  Missed a day of fishing yesterday.  So, could not let that pass without at least wetting a line.  Went with the backup plan (backyard pond) and fished the Tenkara Rod and the Weighted Antron Nymph.  Goldfish were interested, even had one take the fishing fly!

Missed the Trout Derby at Waterloo But Able to Limit Out After!

Missed the Trout Derby at Waterloo in Denison this morning.  But, there were lots of Trout remaining!  Able to limit out using Powerbait in Rainbow Glitter.  After taking five, fished with the Tenkara Rod to catch a few little Bluegill that had been feeding on scrap bait - Bread, Powerbait, etc...floating in the water.  Fun catching them; Weighted Antron Nymph worked well on the Bluegill.  Even managed to catch a "minnow/shad" looking fish on the Nymph!  Not sure what it was but was interesting to catch something other than a Bluegill or Trout from the small pond!

Little Bluegills at Bethany's Feeder Creek... on the Tenkara Rod!

Decided to take the Tenkara Rod out and fish the Feeder Creek at Bethany.  Had fun catching little Bluegill using a Weighted Antron Nymph!  Caught about 20+ in about 40".  All were small but the action was fast and fun....  Good Stuff!

One on a Senko, then Several on a Crappie Jig Variant, and then more with a Tenkara Rod!

Fished Bethany this morning to take advantage of the recent rainstorm and higher water levels.

Caught one Bass on a Senko using a steady retrieve. Then, lost the Senko to a snag. Noticed really good water flow at the waterfall and a lot of fish activity.

Did not bring flyfishing gear but did have some fishing flies in the tackle box. So, rigged up a Hula Popper and tied on a Crappie Jig Variant as a dropper.

Immediately started getting bites on the Crappie Jig Variant; even caught a few Crappie!

Took a break and switched out poles. Grabbed the Tenkara Rod as it works well when fishing the Waterfall.  Caught Crappie, Bass, Panfish, and a little Catfish!

Good Stuff!!!

One on a Senko; three on a Hula Popper and a Dropper!

A Few Sunfish and Bluegill This Evening On the Tenkara Rod.

Since the recent rains, the water level has been up at Bethany.  Decided to take the Tenkara Rod and work the shallows.  Had a few hits but no solid hookups, made worse by losing an Olive Damselfly to a snag.  Tied on a well worn Purple Damselfly and managed to catch a few Sunfish and Bluegill.  Mainly little ones, save for one that went about 7" in size.

Tenkara and Senko Worms - Tenko Fishing Anyone?

Been itching too flex the Tenkara Rod but have been side-tracked by Bass and hand pouring  our version of a Senko Worm - the "Half-Quatro".  So, to enjoy the two, why not combine them and call it Tenko Fishing - small plastic worms fished on a Tenkara Rod!

Since Tenkara Fishing uses small fishing flies, opted to  modify the "Half-Quatro" to a smaller version.  Made two variants of the "Half-Quatro".  Going to call them the "Mini-Mum1" and "Mini-Mum2" for ease of reference.

Tested them out this morning at Bethany Lakes.... water levels are low but the fish remain near the banks and well within casting range of the Tenkara Rod (at least in the morning).  Had several Bass strike the Worms but lost them while bringing them in.  Used small Jig Hooks in lieu of a Bass Worm Hook; will need to come up with a better hook to use else risk more lost Bass.

Made a change after a break off of a decent Bass.... Go figure, only poured two Worms, so was down to one Worm.  Opted to fish the remaining Worm wacky rigged; had more strikes and misses.  This kept up until the Worm split in two.

Not to be left without a lure in the Field, made do and tied on a smaller jig hook and fished using halves!  Good thing.... Bluegill, Sunfish really liked it!

Had a fun time Tenko Fishing this morning.  Will need to come up with a better hook to use, else am happy with the Worms - "Mini-Mum1" and "Mini-Mum2"!  Will need to pour more for the next round.
