Tenkara Fishing a Pond with Foam Grasshoppers! #tenkarafishing #flyfishing

Finally got a much needed haircut after two months! Feel much better now, what to do to celebrate… GO FISHING. Since the Tenkara Iwana Rod from Tenkara USA is at the ready in the little pickup truck, hit the closest pond from the barber… Kroger Park.

Water was clear and the Bass and Bluegill were there. Caught a few, missed a few, had a great time! Fished a “beat up Foam Grasshopper” where the tail was missing, the Beavertail Variant, and then another variant that uses a different foam cutter… cannot recall the name – stonefly, damsel fly… regardless, fish were biting!

Tenkara Fishing This Round Gets 25 Fish This Round

Was able to get a round of fishing between the rainstorms today.  Went with the Tenkara Rod and one fishing fly - the White Guadalupana.  So, with a stick, line, and a fishing fly fished the feeder creek that runs by Harrington Park in Plano and the pond at Suncreek Park in Allen.  Caught 25 fish this round; no Bruisers but still had a lot of fun!

More Fun at Auburn Springs

Had more fun at Auburn Springs this evening.  Brought the Tenkara Rod this round and fished a Guadalupana.  Caught five fish with just a "stick, line, and fishing fly"!  No Bruisers but still had a lot of fun.

Tenkara Rod Still Good For Working the Shoreline!

Went with the Tenkara Rod this morning to work the shoreline at Bethany Lakes.  Been having trouble spooking the fish when using Flyfishing Gear.  Caught one Bruiser Bluegill and missed a decent Bass, else it was mainly little fish... which works well on a Tenkara Rod!

Break in the Weather Allows Testing a "Concept Tenkara Rod"!

Been itching to try out Tenkara Fishing - a Japanese fishing technique that uses a Rod, Level Line, a Tippet, and a Fishing Fly.... and No Fly Reel!

Did a web search of "Tenkara" and found articles, videos, blogs, and a website that sells Tenkara Rods! Liked the thought of minimizing gear to catch fish.... But, was taken back by the cost of a Tenkara Rod!  So, before purchasing a Rod decided to check the Rod Bin and see if a "concept rod" could be used as a substitute.

Good thing.... way back when while overseas, had purchased a 17' telescoping rod in Japan. Bought it on a whim and used it on and off over the years. Using three of the five sections of the rod, came up with a useable 9' "Concept Tenkara Rod"!

After putting the rig together, have been wanting to try it out but have been unable given the weather.   Today though... had a break in weather and made a quick trip to Bethany Lakes to try out the Rod!

Was a tough go with all the ice and snow. But, did manage to land a little Bluegill on a BH Nymph!  Despite the cold weather and slow action, really like this technique. Very easy to walk a bank and cast to "key" areas within 20' of the shoreline.   Moreover, it takes a minimalist approach to fishing and at the same time it is still fly fishing!
