Something Is Still There....

Went back to Kroger Park for another go at the Bruisers that were feeding on bread the other day.  Brought more bread and a Bread Fly that we made using poly fibers from a pillow.

After chumming the area, cast the Bread Fly and a trailer hook baited with bread.  A Bruiser stole the bread, then hit the Bread Fly hard.  Fight lasted only seconds as the line broke soon after. Need to go with a stronger test line next time.

Having lost the Bread Fly, baited a hook with bread and managed a Bullhead and Bluegill just like the other day.  Frustrating to have had one break off; still had a great time though!

Bread Fly Gets a Bruiser....

Decided to try another variation of a Bread Fly we made several years ago.  Last time we used the inner core of polypropylene rope.  This time, we used a dubbing loop to wrap White Marabou and Mallard Cul De Canard feathers on to a Size 2 Baitholder Hook.

Went to Bethany Lakes and chummed with Saltine Crackers, then cast the Bread Fly to the area.  Had several takes but no hook ups, then finally got a solid hookup on a Bruiser Catfish that went 22" in size.  Not bad, seemed fatter than most, too!

Unfortunately, Turtles and Ducks made it tough to keep the are chummed.  Switched to fishing with Bread for bait because it would sink before they could get to it.  Caught Bluegill and little Catfish; no more Bruisers!

Saltines This Round

Went back to Bethany for another round at the Catfish.  Used Saltines this round and caught one Catfish that went 18" in size.  Had a lot more missed strikes.  Looks like Cheez-ITs were the better choice.  Saltines tended to break apart quickly.  Cheez-ITs stayed together and floated longer, making for more chances at the "picky" Catfish.  As it got dark, decided to fish the Bread Fly made out of deer hair.  Caught a decent Bass that was hungry for bread!

Celebration Park - Bullheads and Catfish On Bread....

Decided to checkout the Catfish at Celebration Park's East Pond.  Caught a few Bullheads and one Catfish that went about 16".  Not a bad outing on a nice day!

The angle of the Catfish picture makes it look smaller than 16". Bear with us as we work on better photos....  Regardless, still fun to catch them on Bread and light tackle!

Fished White Rock Lake in Dallas This Morning....

Fished White Rock Lake in Dallas this morning.  Tried Bread for bait and Olive Wooley Buggers in one of the creeks.  Caught mainly small Sunfish and Bluegill.  Did see a few Bruiser Bass as well as smaller Bass.  They were selectively feeding and pretty much ignored our fishing flies.  Fishing buddy did hook a large Goldfish but lost it while trying to land it.  Decided to take break and have lunch - temps were in the 100s!  Afterwards, hit one of the coves and had a few hits on Bread, else no luck.  Still was fun regardless of the slow action and heat.

Returned to Bethany Lakes To Try Bread For Bait.

Returned to Bethany Lakes this afternoon to try Bread for bait.  Caught Catfish and a Bass.  Was surprised the Bass took the Bread.  Still a fun catch, especially when it decided to jump a few times while bringing it in.  Catfish ranged from 12" to 14" in size but there was one Bruiser that we lost while trying to land it.  Oh well.... still a good time!

Another Slow Go At Bethany Lakes.... Caught One Little Bass.

Fished Bethany Lakes this morning.  Was another slow go with only one little Bass caught.  Caught it on an Olive Wooley Bugger.  May need to shift focus on the Catfish.

One Little Bass This AM!

Did receive the two Breadflly fishing flies ordered from Pondbass' Fly Shop.  Ordered these to replace the one I lost several weeks ago.  Nice fishing flies!

Caught a Bruiser Catfish at Celebration Park This Morning!

Stopped by Celebration Park this morning to get a round of fishing in.  Caught several Catfish using Bread for bait.  Action was slow but steady with consistent strikes till about 8AM.  Highlight of the morning was a Bruiser Catfish that went just over 22" in size and 5.5 pounds in weight! Submitted a picture to the COAF Fishing Leader Board; definitely met the 15" minimum to post!

Frustration At Celebration Park's East Pond

Stopped by Celebration Park's East Pond to try out the Bread Fly - a pattern offered by Pondbass' Fly Shop Webstore

Caught a small Sunfish, then a 12" Catfish using the fishing fly.  Had more bites, then lost the fly to a Bruiser Catfish.  Was a nice run while it lasted, will have to purchase another one.

Did switch to Bread for bait and caught three more Catfish.  Also, lost several Bruisers; just could not set the hook or keep them on long enough to land them.

Fun day, regardless of the frustration of losing a fishing fly and missing out on some Bruisers!

More Fun Catching Catfish on the Bamboo "Stake" Rod

More fun catching Catfish this morning at Bethany Lakes using the Bamboo "Stake" Rod.  Caught over a dozen, largest went 17" in size.  Did lose bigger ones and released more than pictured below.

Good to know the Bruisers are still there; bite stayed steady despite the heat. Bread for bait continues to produce.  Fishing rod looks like it can handle a Bruiser.  Will see what happens the next round.

Back to Bethany Lakes In The Late Afternoon.

Went back to Bethany Lakes in the later afternoon.  Temps were brutal but was able to hide in the shade.  Caught one Catfish on Bread, lost several others.  Still was good to know the hot temps did not slow the bite!

Three Catfish Using Bread for Bait and the Bamboo "Stake" Rod!

Fished Bethany Lakes again to see how the rain affected the fishing. Bite was slower than the other day but remained steady with more missed hooksets than landed. Regardless, caught three Catfish that went 17", 15.5", and 15" in size! All were caught using Bread for bait and with the Bamboo "Stake" Rod!

Really Liking the Bamboo "Stake" Rod.... Caught And Released About a Dozen Catfish!

Returned to Bethany Lakes for more fun with the Catfish.  Used Bread for bait and the Bamboo "Stake" Rod.  Caught about a dozen Catfish and took pictures of the three largest - 19", 18.5", and 15"!  Really liking the rod, especially since it as made on the "cheap side".

Eleven Catfish On Bread At Bethany Lakes!

Wind calmed down slightly this evening.  Decided to give it a go and try for some Bruiser Catfish at Bethany Lakes.  Did well but only managed one "semi-Bruiser" that went just over 17" in size, else the remainder ranged from 12" to 15" with the majority going ~14"!  Still not a bad outing given a grocery store bait like Bread.

Bread for Bait Worked Again at Bethany Lakes!

Went back to Bethany Lakes this evening for a quick trip.  Bread for bait worked again at Bethany Lakes with three Catfish caught and many more missed strikes.  Missed the Youth Fishing Derby held earlier but lucked out on a deal.... Was on the road today.  While passing through Corsicana stopped by Gander Mountain.  A lot of items on clearance; bought 4 flyfishing lines and a spool of leader for 97 Cents each.  Total cost was $5.25!

Fun Outing Catching Catfish At Bethany This Evening!

Had a fun time fishing for Catfish at Bethany Lakes this evening.  Could not pass up a nice evening of cool temps.... Even better that the Catfish were readily gobbling up our bait - Bread!  Caught and released eight Catfish, ranging from 12" to 14" in size.  Should be a fun time tomorrow for the "Utes" participating in the Fishing Derby!

Towne Lake Trout Action Was Hot Again This AM!

Update:  Stopped by Towne Lake this afternoon to see if the action this morning carried into the afternoon.  It did with limits being taken by fishermen using bait and lures.  Also, as things do change, gold colors seemed to be the key with Chartreuse and Firetail Rooster Tails (gold blade) in size 1/16 and Gold Superdupers being favored lures!

Fished Towne Lake in McKinney again this morning.  More cold temperatures but were easily ignored as the Trout action was hot.  Caught one using Corn and four using lures! Conducted an impromptu Field Test, switching lures frequently.

End result: Silver bladed spinners were getting more strikes than gold.  However, we did not have a Chartreuse Rooster Tail which one fisherman was using to catch Trout on every cast!

For bait, noted others catching them on Bread, Corn, Salmon Eggs, and Powerbait. That said, things could quickly change, be ready to adjust and try different lures and baits!

Three Bullheads On Bread

Quick trip to Celebration Park this afternoon. Caught 3 Bullheads using Bread for bait. No Bruisers but still fun to get out before the cold front arrives tonight!

Still on standby for the flytying material from the FlyShack; Field Team continues to take its coffee break during the weather delay.  Plans are to update the Team's Squidoo Lens "Black Coffee Review" article as we take our break!

Bethany Lakes On The Fly....

Fished Bethany Lakes for about an hour trying to catch'em on Fishing Flies.  No luck; tried Black Gnats, Olive Wooley Buggers, and Mosquitos.  Pattern has changed due to the front, hopefully surface action will pick up once things settle out.  Did see others catching them on Bread.  Slow action but looked as if a few folks limited!

Matching the Hatch To Flyfish Bethany Lakes' Trout Was Tough....

Fished this morning for Trout at Bethany Lakes.  Kept working various fishing flies without a strike.  Must have changed fishing flies ten times before settling in on a Black Gnat.  Had several strikes but missed them.  And then, set the hook on one but lost it while landing.  Did have another rod baited with Powerbait; hooked and landed it without an issue.  Had to call it short and left with the Trout still active on the surface.

Others were present and were catching Trout on Bread and/or Corn.  Returned later in the evening.  More missed strikes on the Black Gnat, else the bait of choice looked like Bread under a float!

Will see how the incoming front affects them.  Hope to catch on in the near future on Dryfly....!
