Tough Go On The Blue River... Only Two This Round

Made it to the Blue River today. Trout Derby was ongoing and lots of folks fishing. Overall, the bite was tough but did see a few fishermen limit out. Also, saw one fisherman catch a Bruiser and another fisherman hook a Bruiser but lost it while landing it!

Started the morning fishing a Near Deere under an indicator. Had two strikes and misses, and then the bite slowed. Kept at it for a while, then started checking out different places on the river before settling in by the Island.

After changing fishing flies multiple times, settled on a tandem rigged Near Deere and Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph (GRHEN). Had a strike and a solid hook set. First Trout this round! The Trout looked foul hooked because the Near Deere was embedded in the body but once in hand, it was clear the Trout had struck the GRHEN.

Kept fishing with several more missed strikes. Then, decided to checkout the pockets along one stretch were the Bruisers typically lurk. Sure enough, saw several with a couple that were close enough to get some video!

Hoping for one more Trout, decided to give it "one more cast" by Hughes Crossing. After more than one cast, managed one more Trout and a little Perch!  Fun stuff....

Sunfish and Bluegill On the Fly This Round

Late start today and short on time.  Decided to try for Sunfish and Bluegill on the fly at Celebration Park's North Pond.  Started with a GRHEN, then switched to a Size 20 Dry Fly.  A lotta of small bugs in the air and falling on to the water's surface that the fish were feeding on. No Bruisers but still lots of fun!  Even caught a Shad or Minnow looking thing!

A Limit at Waterloo to Close Out the Year!

Decided to head to Denison this afternoon to fish Waterloo Park Pond for one more shot at Rainbow Trout in 2013.  Caught a limit - one on a GRHEN and four on a COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly.

Light strikes, had to pay close attention to the line and feel of the strike.  Missed several strikes, but was able to hook a few!

Fun stuff... especially after two weeks since the pond was stocked.  No worries though; the next stocking is this weekend!

Cold Morning... Caught a Limit!

Stopped by Bethany Lakes to fish this morning.  Really cold; rod guides were icing up.  Did see one limit taken, else the action was slow.

Tried catching them using fly fishing gear; had a few strikes but did not hook up.  After a couple of hours, headed to the house to warm up and add a few more layers to stay warm.

After a cup of coffee and when the feeling came back in my toes, headed back for another try. This time was able to catch two on PowerBait and three on a GRHEN!

Fun stuff but do dress warm!

Kicked Off the Season at Waterloo!

Headed to Denison today and fished Waterloo.  Was not sure if the pond was stocked with Rainbow Trout but was able to confirm that it was stocked after seeing another fisherman hook up!

Started fly fishing with zero strikes; switched to PowerBait and quickly caught three.  Went back to fly fishing and tried various fishing flies and retrieves.

Finally hooked up using a Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and letting it sink for a 10-15 count. Used short retrieves and watched the line closely for any hint of a strike!

Did some catch and release fishing for a little while, then called it a day after keeping two caught on the fly!

PS:  Did see others limiting out using PowerBait, Power Eggs, and Corn!  Action was steady!

Russell Creek Park Pond This Afternoon!

Fished Russell Creek Park Pond in the heat of the day.  Was a tough go with a few hits using the Guadalupana and a Dry Fly.  Then, switched to the Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and a slow retrieve.  Caught a number of Bluegill and Sunfish and several fingerling Bass.  Overall, was a fun time!

20 Bluegill/Sunfish and 5 Bass Yesterday...

Went with a Fly Rod yesterday when we fished Bethany Lakes.  Question came up on the Texas Fishing Forum about fly fishing at Bethany.  Overall, we tend to get more strikes when fly fishing; yesterday's outing seemed the case compared to the Senkos we used on Monday. Caught 20 Bluegill and Sunfish and 5 Bass.  The Bluegill and Sunfish tended to be small... not as big as we saw earlier when they were on their beds at least in the Back Pond.  No Bruiser Bass either but they did put up a nice fight on a Four Weight; even got a few action shots!

Bite Was On This Morning

Fished the morning bite at Frisco Commons. Trout were active, rising and feeding on the surface.  Brought the 8-WT Flyrod this time to help gain more distance on the cast.

Quickly caught a limit of Trout using a Size 12 Guadalupana.  Then, did some catch and release fishing... had catches using a Size 12 Guadalupana, Size 10 White Guadalupana, and then a Size 12 GRHEN!

Fun stuff... even better, made for a tasty Sunday Brunch!

Quick Trip To Huaco Springs....

Made a dash to the River and fished Huaco Springs.  Limited in time and had to deal with strong winds, managed one Stocker Trout.  Little one that was released.  Still had fun, still beats working!

Pattern Changed....

Another round at Bethany this morning.  Things started out well with steady surface action and rising Trout.  Able to sight cast and hook and land two; missed about ten others.  Then, the action stopped.  Met another TFF Member and started working the area near the pier.  Had a lot of interested "looks" at GRHENs, Zebra Midges, GloBugs, and many other fishing flies.  Then, the other TFF Member hooked up with three that took a Micro Jig!

Unfortunately, had to leave them biting.  "Honey Do's" were calling - specifically, Christmas Shopping at the Mall.  However, got a break when we learned the Mall did not open till Noon. So, went back to Bethany to try for three more Trout to make a limit.

Brought Bread this time as the Trout were readily feeding on it earlier.  Tied on a Size 12 Hook and pressed the Bread into a flat shape, then freelined it just off the pier.  Ended up missing a number of strikes but did get three more Trout.

Pattern seemed to have changed.  Less surface activity and more lurking below waiting for food to come by.  Going to play the next week by ear and adjust appropriately.

Field Team Gets Two Limits!

Fished the morning bite and limited out on Trout using a GRHEN!  Caught them by sight casting to risers as schools passed by.  Missed a lot more either when bring them in or right after they struck the fishing fly.

Came back with fishing buddy "T-Bone", and baited up with Powerbait Yellow Glitter Garlic.  Managed a limit in about 30"!

While walking back to the parking area stopped by the pier to checkout the action.  Trout were there,... just very picky about what they wanted.  Did notice them readily taking Bread.  May need to try freelining Bread next round!

PS:  Two Limits for Dinner!

Fishing Flies Worked This Round!

Went to Bethany Lakes this morning and brought the Fly Fishing Gear.  Had tried Wooley Buggers earlier in the week.  Had one strike but did not land any.  Several years ago they were going for Black Midges and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymphs (GRHENs).  So, what was in the fly box this time... Black Midges and GRHENs.

Good thing... had several Trout take the Dry Fly but either missed the hookset or came off the hook while reeling it in.  Was finally able to get one to stay on the hook long enough to land it.  Then, decided to switch to the GRHEN.  Had several strikes and misses, then landed two before losing the fishing fly.  Called it a morning with plans to stop by at lunch time.

Returned at lunch time and was able to get two more to complete a limit.  Caught them using the GRHEN!  Fun stuff... posted a video clip.  No action shots and had trouble pronouncing Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph; regardless, it was fun catching them on the fly!
