Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Mojo was off this round with too many missed hook sets and thrown hooks. Did manage to get two Bass. No Bruisers but still fun. One took a Tube Popper Fly; the other went for a Foam Damsel Fly. .

Start the 4th of July Weekend with a quick trip to Bethany Lakes. Had some rain earlier in the day; water levels were up and fish were feeding in the shallows. Things started of with a missed hook set, and then no hits for a while. Then, lucked into a little Bluegill, and a couple of Bass. All went for a Foam Damsel Fly!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Brought the Five Weight Fly Rod but this time replaced the reel with a 4/5 Weight Echo Ion. Liked the 8/10 Weight for the Switch Rod; decided to get the smaller size reel for the Five Weight! Liked it, too! Started fishing with a Foam Damsel Fly and caught Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass. Did lose one to a decent Bass that broke the tippet. Later, switched to a Tube Popper Fly. Missed several nice looking fish; too slow on the hookset. But, did get two Bass! Fun stuff!
Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Started out catching Bluegill using a COAF Guadalupana by the Waterfall. Then, worked the Main Pond; two missed strikes else no fish. Began working the Back Pond and lucked into a bed of Bluegill; caught a number of them with a Balsa Popper Fly. As the evening progressed, noticed the Dragonflies and Damselflies hovering about... switched to a Foam Damsel Fly and caught four Bass before calling it a trip. Fun stuff... out of Foam Damsel Flies though; Bass really beat them up this time. Good thing they are an easy and fast pattern to tie!
Went back out for another round of fishing this evening. Decided to give a Foam Damsel Fly a try at Kroger Park Pond. Slow action with little bluegill nipping at the fishing fly but no hook ups. Then, started working pockets in the algae and caught two Bass. Then, worked the shoreline and got one more Bass to take. Afterwards, switched to a Tube Popper Fly and hooked a Bass! Fun stuff! Here is a picture of the last Bass and video of the action:
Fished Bethany Lakes this morning and caught a few Bass and Bluegill/Sunfish. Then, checked out another pond and caught Bluegill, and then one Bass that went 14" in size! Used several fishing flies - Tube Popper Fly, COAF Guadalupana, Purple COAF Damsel Fly, Foam Damsel Fly, and a Balsa Popper Fly. Overall, the Bass went for the Purple COAF Damsel Fly; Bluegill went for the Balsa Popper Fly.

Slow bite this round at Bethany Lakes. We managed two Bluegill and two Bass. Did have a few more strike but missed the hook sets. Bluegill went for the Foam Damsel Fly, and the Bass went for the Tube Popper Fly.
Fished Bethany this afternoon using a Four Weight Fly Rod and a Foam Damsel Fly. Bite was steady with 7 Bass caught and released. No Bruisers this round but still had a lotta fun. Lots of Dragonflies in the air, perfect time to use a Foam Damsel Fly!
Made it to Bethany for more fun fishing with a Foam Damsel Fly. Fished the Main Pond and caught several Bass, then decided to work the Lower Pond. Ended up catching 13 Bass and several Bluegill. No Bruisers but the largest Bass did go 14" in size. Lots of fun, especially liking the top water action with the Foam Damsel Fly!
Cooler temps today; luckily, the Bass and Bluegill were still going for the Foam Damsel Fly. Enjoyed some top water action this evening! Not sure what tomorrow brings but suspect the pattern will change with the cold temps. Frost warning in May? Go figure!
Fished Bethany this evening with the Four Weight Fly Rod and a Foam Damsel Fly. The one we used the other day lost its tail after catching two Bass. This round made more than one in case it happened again. Luckily it did not; the little fishing fly took a beating but held up even after catching (and releasing) 18 Bass and 10 Bluegill! Lotta fun; really liking this pattern. Simple to tie; minimal material. Only big expense was buying the Foam Cutter. Bought it on a whim when we ordered the Beavertail Foam Cutter since the $5.00 shipping cost was the same for one or two cutters. Stay tuned, plan to post an article on the fishing fly pattern... gonna call it the "Fly Tying - Simple Foam Damsel Fly"!
Fished Kroger Park (officially Bethany Ridge Park) pond and caught a Bass on a Beavertail Grasshopper. Then, went across the street and fished Bethany Lakes and caught several more Bass, using a Foam Damsel Fly and a Foam Grasshopper. Had ordered some Foam Cutters to make a variant of the Foam Grasshopper that we tie. It's a Beavertail Foam Cutter that is used to make a Chernobyl Ant. Used it to make a Beavertail Grasshopper. Also, ordered a Damsel Fly Foam Cutter; used it to make a Foam Damsel Fly the mimics the Dragonflies that the Bass were feeding on. Too bad it only lasted two fish before the tail was torn off!
Liking the Foam Cutters and especially liking the Foam Damsel Fly.... very easy to tie using a minimum of material! Check out today's video. Action was slower compared to yesterday but regardless, had a fun time and was able to "test" a promising new fly pattern!
