Check out our first of hopefully many more video podcasting to come on Spotify! This round I talk about fishing and more with emphasis on Fly Fishing in the DFW Metroplex.
I talk in general but do mention several key spots around the area that may be of interest to the avid fishermen!
Do check it out!
Specifically: My Top 5 Fly Fishing Spots in DFW
Number 5: Ponds - especially during Trout Stocking Season
Number 4: Creeks - Sandy Run but Turtle Creek in Dallas
Number 3: Lakes - Grapevine Lake access from shore
Number 2: Rivers - Trinity Fly Fest
Number 1: Tailraces - Denison Dam and Possum Kingdom (also Hwy 16 Bridge)
Here is a pattern that worked well on the Blue River in Oklahoma for Trout this past Season. Decided to try an olive variant and fish the local pond. Worked well on Bluegill and Bass. But, you still got to keep them on the line and land them.

You can purchase various size Whip Finish Tools for Fly Tying, or you can make custom size ones that work well with larger fishing flies that have lots of things like hackle, feathers, and rubber legs that get in the way. Larger gap in the tool makes for easier whip finishing of foam grasshoppers and spiders where the final wraps are completed mid-body at times.

Video of last Sunday's trip to a new place... pond in Rockwall, Texas. Check out the video, key item to suggest is to try the retrieve I used to limit out - The Twitch and Stop Retrieve!
Harry Meyers Park in Rockwall has two ponds... there is a third one but it may not have been stocked with trout.
Stocked with Rainbow Trout last weekend, I decided to check out the Park and maybe wet a line and limit out on trout.
When I arrived, I quickly noticed how small the ponds were. No worries though, I observed a number of fishermen catching trout using lures and bait.
Compiled videos from past posts about fly tying with a mix of fly fishing that may be of interest to some. It is a long video that includes several quick tying demonstrations as well as dialog about fishing them.
I tied most of the patterns using a Peak Rotary Vise. It is the last tying vise I purchased, and I don't plan on purchasing another vise. In the past I used a simple vise offered in a kit, moved to another vise that was heavier duty, and then to a discount rotary vise that I have since converted to a tube fly tying vise.
Do check out the video, and do try one or two of these patterns on your own tying vise!
This round we talk about fishing flies to answer the mail to a follow-on request to our earlier Fly Fishing Live Broadcast. Again, we take the Average Joe's point of view.
Do checkout the livestream, and do checkback for more Livestreams from the Team!
Here are the links to the articles and videos mentioned in the livestream.
Here is the fishing fly that produced for us recently on the Blue River in Oklahoma. Tried various fishing flies before settling on the Near Deere. Trout were taking both olive and white with the key factor being the presentation and retrieve - short pull retrieves! Do give it a try!
Decided to tie a Wooley Bugger to my @GoFish Cam several seasons back, and then "troll" it in a shallow side creek to the main channel of the Blue River. Was surprised how many trout were in the less than knee deep water as well as some that were near my feet! Step lightly when wade fishing!
On a whim, tied a Muddler Minnow and headed to the local pond with the Vintage Bamboo Fly Rod. After figuring our the pattern - short pauses between short pulls of the line, caught a Bluegill and several Bass!
Lots of fun knowing that a fly rod that is older than myself can still be used. I am a little careful when landing fish. But, I do think the rod will land a good size Bass or other similar fish.
Kayak Fly Fishing is fun! Even better with an OPST Commando Head to make it easier to cast from a sitting position! See full video at https://youtu.be/qnjuabWu4AU
Back to the local pond for a quick trip fly fishing for Bass and Bluegill using the Martin Fly Fishing Kit. This round I am fishing Betts Hand Tied Poppers and continue using the OPST Commando Head for a shooting head added to the 5wt Level Fly Line that came with the kit. Short trip but still lots of fun catching a fish or two.
Next in the Getting Started in Fly Fishing series is a video that shows yours truly catching fish using only 32 feet of line - 8 feet of line on the rod, 16 feet of line past th rod tip, and 8 feet of leader tippet.
If you are first starting out and you get frustrated with your cast, try less line and focus on a stealth approach/presentation to fish lurking near the bank.
And, gain a feel for setting the hook and playing a fish on a fly rod.
Fun stuff!
Do check back for more in the series... next up is a look at the fishing flies that came with the $33 Martin Fly Fishing Kit!
Back to a local pond that I have not fished for in awhile to “test” the Martin Fly Fishing Combo sold in a kit by Amazon. Using a Muddler Minnow that came with the kit. It’s beaten up but still catches fish. Lots of fun, and got a new idea for the next video in the series where I use only 32 feet of line to fish. The intent… you don’t need to cast long distances to catch fish to get started fly fishing! Stay tuned for more!

Before you go fishing with the Martin Fly Fishing Combo, try these two modifications.
Mod 1. If you want to change reel’s left-hand retrieve to a right-hand retrieve.
Mod 2. Add a section of 30lbs mono to replace the knot used to connect the fly line to the leader with a loop to loop connection.
Works for similar single action fly reels that use a click-pawl drag aka clicker. Do check back for the next video if the Getting Started Fly Fishing – $33 Amazon Challenge… look for DIY Leader Recipe that show how we make our own fly fishing leaders instead of buying them!
