Stop Backlashes with Spool Tension & Brake Tweaks 🎣 | Average Angler Life

I’ve been spending time tweaking my ultralight baitcaster so it will cast cleanly without constant backlashes. The process that works best for me is pretty straightforward.

First priority is spool tension. Get that dialed in so the spool has just the right amount of resistance. Once the tension feels solid, I move to the brakes and make small, deliberate adjustments while watching how the spool behaves on a cast.

Spool tension first. Then small brake adjustments. Fewer birds’ nests.

It takes a little patience and a few test casts, but once both are in the right range the reel becomes much more forgiving. Fewer birds’ nests, more confidence, and a lot more fun on the water.

If you’re new to BFS or ultralight baitcasters and fighting backlashes, start with tension, then fine-tune the brakes. That simple order has made the biggest difference for me.

Fish number 3 is in the books for the one-lure challenge. I’m still fishing the same Loch Haven inline spinner and working a local pond for bass.

No switching. No backup baits. Just putting in the time with one lure and paying attention to what works. The steady retrieve continues to produce, and each fish teaches me a little more about how this spinner wants to be fished.

One lure. Fish #3. Still learning with every cast.

These limited-lure sessions strip away the extra choices and force better focus. It’s been a good reminder that you don’t always need a full tackle box to have a solid day on the water.

On to the next cast — and hopefully fish number 4.

Here’s a quick highlight from my one vintage lure challenge. This bass came on the old-school Abu inline spinner with nothing fancy — just a steady retrieve, dialed in so the blade kept spinning consistently.

That’s the beauty of these classic Swedish spinners. When you get the speed right, the vibration and flash do the rest. No need for constant rod work or bait changes. Keep it moving just enough and let the lure fish.

Steady retrieve. Blade spinning. Fish on. Classic tackle still delivers.

These moments remind me why I still reach for the older stuff. There’s something honest and satisfying about catching fish the way anglers did decades ago.

One lure challenge with the Rapala X-Rap! In this session a bass struck as the lure was paused briefly during a twitch-and-stop retrieve.

Pauses can be incredibly effective. When a fish is following or deciding whether to commit, stopping the lure for a second or two often triggers the strike. Limiting yourself to one lure also forces better focus on presentation and timing.

Pauses can be deadly — always give the lure a moment to sit.

This short session was a good reminder that simple retrieves and patience still catch fish.

Whether you're fishing in clear waters or heavily pressured lakes, ultralight lures can make all the difference.

Even broke out the ultralight baitcaster and the tandem rigged spec rigs for sand trout under the lights!

Ultralight Baitcasting with a Mepps Inline Spinner

Decided to run down the road to the local pond (Bethany Lakes) and see what was biting. Brought the KastKing Zephyr BFS Reel and Ultralight Lures and left the fly rod at home. Plan was to fish Roostertails but switched to a Mepps Inline Spinner since the Trout seemed to be interested in them – specifically, a copper bladed Mepps Inline Spinner. Trout were following the spinner but not striking which was promising given they ignored gold, silver, and black.

For fun and games, fished only the copper bladed Mepps Inline Spinner to see how many fish I could catch. Worked the banks of two of the four ponds at Bethany Lakes… “Main Pond” and “Back Pond”. Caught a number of fish – Bass and Bluegill.
