Made It To The Blue River Today!

Made it to the Blue River (Ok) today.  Caught a little Bass on a Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph.  Then, no strikes for awhile.  Switched to Wooley Buggers for a good portion of the morning with the same results - no strikes.

Went with Power Bait and caught two Trout!  Then, nothing again.  Cloudy water conditions made it tough but others were catching them.  Saw some nice stringers brought in to the Trout Derby's weigh station.

Late afternoon/early evening started working a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and finally caught a Trout on a fly.  Nice start to the 2011-2012 Season! Made even better when a trio of fisherman working a section less than 10 yards away hooked and landed a couple of Bruisers; larger of the two is posted in the picture below.  Nice to know they are lurking in the area!

Limited Out At Prosper... Used a BH Leech and a "Powerbait Hook" Trailer!

Decided to fish Whitley Place Park using flyfishing gear this morning....  Had a few strikes yesterday but could not hook up with the Trout.  Used a BH Olive Wooley Bugger and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph yesterday.

Today, went with a BH Leech that we picked up from Scotty's One Stop Shop on a trip to the Blue River last year.  And then, replaced the Nymph trailer with a Size 14 Wet Fly Hook modified by adding a part of a ballpoint pen spring!

Had tried other ways to cast Powerbait using a flyfishing gear with limited success.  Today, the design -  calling it the "Powerbait Hook", allowed for normal flycasting without losing the bait!

Going to keep this one in our backpocket when all else is not working....

Trout Limit At Whitley Place Park!

Was able to try a new place that we had not been to before - Whitley Place Park in Prosper.  Limited out on Trout using Orange Powerbait.  And, caught several Sunfish and a Trout on a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and a Bead Head Prince Nymph, respectively.  Fun time, just was not sure about the place as it is located in a subdivision.  PS: Finally caught a fish using the new fishing reel!

One Bluegill On A Cold, Rainy Afternoon.... At Shadow Lakes

Decided to brave the cold and rain to wet a line.... Stopped by Shadow Lakes to fish the ponds using the BH Olive Wooley Bugger and Nymph Trailer.  Ended up tangling and losing the rig to a Tree Fish.  Tied on a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and drifted it near one of the "waterfalls" where water flows from one pond to another.  Had some light strikes which turned out to be Bluegill.  Landed one that went about 6" in size!

Saturday Trout Derby At Waterloo Brings More Limits!

Field Team fished Waterloo Park Pond in Denison today.  Arrived while a Trout Derby was in progress.  Pond was stocked recently, Friday according to some of the participants.  Too late to join the contest but the pond was open to all licensed fishermen.

Field Team limited out with five Trout each.  All but two were caught using Chartreuse Powerbait.  Of the two Trout, one was caught on a Bead Head Olive Wooley Bugger and the other was caught on a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph!

One Fishing Fly Challenge - December Challenge Closed Out and Modifications for 2011 Completed!

The Field Team closed out December's One Fishing Fly Challenge with NucLaroche's 12" Trout caught on a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph taking the lead for the month.

For 2011, the Challenge was modified as follows:
  • Largest fish caught using fishing flies! Therefore, any fish caught on a fishing fly is eligible.
  • Instead of a monthly challenge, the challenge will run all year with a leader board (2011 Picture Board) listing the top 10 fish caught for the year.
  • Entries must be submitted between 1Jan'11 to 31Dec'11.
For more details, check out the One Fishing Fly Challenge website on the Field Team's informal fishing contest!

Good luck and good fishing!

Merry Christmas!

The Field Team wishes our Readers a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays in 2010.

The year has been filled with many "quick trips" to local community lakes and ponds. These trips have produced a few Bruisers as well as a few strikeouts.  Regardless, we enjoy each chance we get to fish!

Moreover, each trip offers us the opportunity to share in words and/or pictures of the fish we have caught (or missed) with our Readers and possibly, by some chance, helps others enjoy fishing success!

We appreciate our Readers' support and look forward to another fun year in 2011!

Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Field Team Plus One... Limits Out At Waterloo!

Was able to breakaway from the Holiday Gathering and go back to Waterloo for more Trout.  Colder temps compared to the other day but action remained hot!

Field Team - NucLaroche and Fshng84, plus one of our Holiday Guests took three limits of Trout making for a hearty breakfast tomorrow morning!

Two Trout were caught flyfishing.  Used the same setup we use on the Blue River - Olive Wooley Bugger with a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph.  Both Trout struck the Nymph in lieu of the Wooley Bugger.

All others were caught using Orange Powerbait.  Trout seemed to prefer Orange over Chartreuse today.  Good stuff, despite the cold!

PS:  Even had a Hawk checking us (or the fishing action) from the trees nearby.

Waterloo Continues to Produce Trout... Fishing Flies Are Working!

Fished Waterloo in Denison today for one last hurrah before personal commitments pull the Field Team away from fishing...! Good decision to go. Temps were warm and the action was hot. Had a great time catching them on Powerbait, Olive Wooley Buggers, and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymphs!

Trout were readily taking Powerbait Trout Nuggets in Chartreuse and Trout Bait in Orange. Action on fishing flies was slower but steady with strikes coming on slow to no retrieves! Just let the fishing fly slowly sink and prepare for the strike!

Another good day of fishing was had by the Field Team!

Cooked Trout, More Trout At Waterloo, and Restocked Powerbait!

Cooked yesterday's catch for dinner... a great tasting meal was enjoyed.  Decided to return to Waterloo Park Pond in the morning to go for another limit!  Good decision....

Fast action on Powerbait Trout Nuggets; fishing buddy and I limited out in about 40" with five Trout each. Would have been quicker but wanted to catch the last one using flyfishing gear which took about 15" to catch it.

Trout were striking the fishing fly rig - a Wooley Bugger with a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph trailer, they just were not taking the fly tending more to tapping it lightly. Finally managed to hook one on a slowwwwwwww retrieve.

On the way back home, stopped at Gander Mountain in Sherman and restocked on Powerbait - Trout Bait, Trout Worms, and Glitter Trout Bait, and Size 12 and 14 Hooks! PS: Shelves were fully stocked with a wide selection of Powerbaits!

Limited Out On Trout At Bethany Lakes This Evening.

Made it to Bethany Lakes this evening. Limited out using Powerbait in Orange and in Pink! Stayed a little longer afterwards to share some pointers with a fellow fisherman who caught three Trout.

Action was steady with limits being taken! Six Trout were caught using Orange and two were caught using Pink!

Back To The Blue River.... Two Trout Caught.

Went back to the Blue River for another go at the Trout!  Slower action compared to last week but still had a great time.  Caught two and lost a lot more.  One was caught using a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph, and the other one was caught using a Prince Nymph.  For the ones that were lost, here are the details:
  • Lost two using a Brown Stonefly Nymph
  • Lost one using a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph
  • Lost two using a Griffith's Gnat
  • Lost one using a Prince Nymph
  • Lost one using an Olive Wooley Bugger

"Lost" means set the hook, fish was tugging on the line, but never was landed.  Includes one that was in hand but slipped out and fell back in the river! Bottomline:  Had a great time on the Blue River!

PS:  Bring Nymphs, bring a Strike Indicator, bring a Net.... and bring a Wading Stick!  Also, did see a few flyfishermen taking them consistently using a Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph under a strike indicator.

Limited Out On Trout on the Blue River but.... Saw Many Bruisers!

Decided to fish the Blue River today.  A Trout Derby was being held, so the river was busy but... the Trout action was great.  Caught a limit of six Trout but none were the size of the Bruisers caught by some lucky anglers!

Was a great day to be out on a river fishing; even better that it was the Blue River and the chance of Trout to be caught.  Seemed like everyone was getting a bite!

Breakdown of the fish caught today:
  • First Trout caught on a Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph
  • Second Trout caught on a Gold Super Duper
  • Trout 3,4, and 5 caught on Orange Powerbait
  • Caught and released a Trout using a BH Olive Wooley Bugger
  • Trout 6 caught on Orange Powerbait

Tough Morning... One Fingerling Bass.

Was a tough morning.  Activity was slow compared to yesterday but did see other catching fish using bait.  Caught a fingerling Bass on a Hares Ear Nymph, else no luck using Leeches, Wooley Buggers, and other Streamers.  Did lose a few fishing flies to snags and "Tree Fish". May spend today indoors tying more fishing flies... forecasted high of 100+ degree temperature today!

Bluegills And A Bass At Bethany Lakes This Evening!

Was hoping for Bruisers but ended with Bluegills and a Bass at Bethany Lakes this evening.  Fished with Wooley Buggers, Hares Ear Nymph, and a Black Gnat.  Caught the Bass on a Wooley Bugger, one Bluegill on the Nymph, and then a bunch of Bluegill on the Gnat fished dry.  Good practice for Trout this Winter!

Eight Little Bass on a Yellow Grasshopper at Bethany Lakes

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening to continue testing the Yellow Grasshopper with Centipede Legs.

Caught eight little Bass and a few Bluegill. No Bruisers but was glad to see the pattern is getting its share of strikes!

March 31, 2009 - Archgate Park in Plano.

Checked out Bethany Lakes in the early afternoon. No luck flyfishing a Wooley Bugger. Stopped by Archgate Park in Plano in the early evening. Caught one Bluegill on a Wooley Bugger, and then several more on a Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. One Bruiser Bluegill came in at just under 8" in size! March 1, 2009 - Limited Out @ Towne Lake.

Fished the early afternoon with the action picking up later in the day. Able to take another limit of Trout at McKinney's Towne Lake. However, action has slowed compared to last week. Took about 2 hours to get a limit, and the frequency of bites was lower than last week. First three were caught using Corn fished on the bottom. Last two were taken on Bread free-lined using a treble hook. Checked stomach contents. Two had Corn, one had a Crappie Nibble in Chartruese. Remainder were empty. Noted others fishing the surface were having good success. Lures and flyfishing did not appear to be productive. FYI: Cormorant arrived and started chasing/eating the Trout. Best bet is to fish Towne Lake sooner than later as the Cormorant will take their share quickly. Click-on DFW Fishing News for more fishing information in the Metroplex area. Limit of 5 Trout.

Early start this morning made for a limit of five Trout at Bethany Lakes. Fish were caught in less than an hour with consistent hits throughout. Used Bread for bait and also managed to take a Trout flyfishing a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. But, the fish may have struck the fishing fly because it looked like a piece of Bread. Decided not to count it as a fly-caught Trout till I get consistent strikes. FYI: Fished the Bread using a bobber and setting the depth at 3'-4'. Also, examined the stomach contents. Noted Bread, Corn, and mix of Corn/Bread. No midges found like last year. Plan to keep using bait.

Bethany Lakes - November 21, 2008

Fished Bethany Lakes main pond this evening. Fished with Bread for bait; a few light nibbles but no solid bites. Will have to try other tactics; at least until the Trout arrive. Did stop at Dick's Sporting Goods and stocked up on Copper Super Dupers and Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymphs. Found them to be consistent producers on stocked Trout during the first week of release.
