Tennis Ball Fishing Float — A Cheap & Tough DIY Hack
Looking for a simple, no-cost way to make a big, highly visible fishing float? One of my favorite budget tricks is turning an old tennis ball into a surprisingly effective large bobber. It’s tough, bright, and perfect for bigger rigs.
Why a Tennis Ball Makes a Great Float
- Extremely durable and virtually unsinkable
- Bright yellow/green color stands out in choppy water or low light
- Perfect size for heavier rigs and bigger baits
- Casts surprisingly well when used properly
Best Uses
This technique was popularized by pier fishermen in Oceanside, California. Because overhead casting is often restricted on many piers, anglers would cast underhanded for distance using the tennis ball float. It worked exceptionally well for catching Bonito and Mackerel.
It’s also excellent for:
- Surf casting with big baits
- Live bait drifting in lakes or rivers
- Any situation where you need a large, sturdy float that resists being pulled under
This DIY float is beginner‑friendly, holds up trip after trip, and costs basically nothing if you have old tennis balls lying around.
