Bass On Damsel Flies This Round

Fished with a COAF Damsel Fly this time at Bethany Lakes; had several misses but did land four Bass! Largest was caught by the waterfall in a shallow pocket.

Really liking our variant of the Damsel Fly. Works well this time of year when the Bass are tending to strike at fishing flies that bounce the bottom which is why we use the it as it tends to ride hook bend up when fished making for less hang ups on the bottom!

PS:  Stay tuned, will be posting another fly tying article that details how we make a COAF Damsel Fly!

Update:  Here is the article on how we make a COAF Damsel Fly!

Bite Was On at Bethany... Damsel Flies

Decided on the Four Weight Fly Rod this evening at Bethany.  Had a later start but the bite was on.  Managed to catch 18 Bass that went for a White Damsel Fly.  Faster retrieve was working this time.  Missed a lot more than we hooked.  Was lotta fun made even better by a nice day!

PS:  Better view of the Beaver we saw yesterday - calling it the "Bethany Beaver"!

Two Sunfish Tonight at Bethany

Went to Bethany to listen to the Summer Sounds Concert... last one this season!  While there, had to fish of course.  Looks like the Summer pattern is here - no bites till well after 7PM.  Two missed strikes on Bass, several missed strikes on Bluegill, and then finally hooked a couple of Sunfish.  Good stuff!

Action Was Hot at Bethany Today!

Fished Bethany this afternoon.  Action was hot today!  Had them striking a Brown Damsel Fly Variant, White Crappie Jig Variant, White Wooley Bugger, and a White Damsel Fly!  No hits on olive though (which is normally the go to color).  Fun stuff,... caught 16 little Bass, lost one Bruiser that broke the leader, and lost several more while landing them.  PS:  Polarized lenses were a plus in catching them.

Cold Day At Bethany!

Fished Bethany and caught a Bass and a Bluegill.  Was rough though; ice kept forming in the rod guides!  Made a short video clip of the "action"!  Package from the Fly Shack arrived, going to stay indoors warm up and then may do more fly tying!

Damsel Flies Continue to Produce At Bethany!

Slideshow of fish we caught today at our favorite local pond - Bethany Lakes. Big surprise today was Crappie caught in the Lower Pond!

Used the Tenkara Rod and fished Damsel Flies and Foam Spiders and Grasshoppers with the "go to" fishing fly being the Damsel Fly in either Olive or Purple!

Checked out the Lower Pond; Caught Little Bass mainly!

Went back out to Bethany Lakes with the Tenkara Rod.  Had a great time catching little Bass and a little Crappie from the Lower Pond.  Damsel Fly continued to produce.  Good to see that Pond is coming back from last year's cleanup work!  Here is a short video of the action.

4 Bass and 5 Sunfish On The Purple Damsel Fly!

Stopped by Auburn Springs (South) to test the waters using the Tenkara Rod.  Worked the bank and the feeder creek; caught and released 4 Bass and 5 Sunfish.  Largest Bass went 16" in size!  Fun stuff, even after losing a larger Bass than the 16 incher!  Still liking the Tenkara Rod and the ability to work the pond banks and small feeder creeks.

6 Bluegill and 7 Bass On Damsel Flies!

New fishing spot turned out to be a good thing.  Passed this one by many times and have been meaning to fish it for a couple of years.  Finally checked it out yesterday evening. Noting the sign indicated catch and release only, pond looked promising!

Was going to fish topwater with the Deer Hair Bug.  But, since the cool front dropped temps into the 50's, tied on a Damsel Fly instead.  Soon after started catching fish; caught 6 Bluegill and 7 Bass by the end of the trip.

Largest Bluegill went about 8" in size; largest Bass went about 15" or 16" in size.  All were caught on Damsel Flies!  Had a great time catching (and releasing) them!

Kroger Park Again, Bass and Bluegill Were Liking Dry Flies!

Went back to Kroger Park today.  Caught one Bass on a Damsel Fly, then had a tough go until we tied a Dry Fly on.  Bass and Bluegill were taking them on the water's surface!

Bethany Quick Trip At Noon, Then Kroger Park in the Late Afternoon,...

Made a quick trip to Bethany Lakes at noon today.  Tied more Olive Damsel Flies to replace lost ones.  Good thing, was able to hook and land one that went about 15" in size.  Slow retrieve and subtle strikes were the norm today.

Then, fished Kroger Park in the late afternoon and caught more Bluegill!  Caught a few on a Dry Fly with a lot of misses.  Then, switched to a Grass Shrimp Pattern that we tied but have yet to catch anything on it until today!

Bluegill really liked the Pattern.  Bass checked it out and struck but missed setting the hook.  May need to adjust the size, these were tied on a Size 16 Hook.

Kroger Park Outing Gets More Bluegill and a Bruiser That Broke Off

Went back to Kroger Park.  This round brought Fly Fishing Gear instead of the Tenkara Rod.  Caught a Bluegill on the Olive Damsel Fly, then lost the fly to a Bruiser Bass.

Switched to an Oliver Wooley Bugger and caught more Bluegill.  Hated losing the Bass, easily would have took the lead in the One Fishing Fly Challenge!  Oh well, next time!

Bethany Lakes in the Morning; Kroger Park in the Afternoon!

Fished Bethany Lakes this morning.  Caught several fish using the Damsel Flies we tied last night.  And then, lost the Fishing Flies to snags.

Had to go back to the fly tying table and make some more.  Then, went back out in the afternoon and fished Kroger Park, and caught more fish!  Nice today but really windy.  No worries, did a lot of "creative" casting to get the fly to the fish.

Damsel Flies and a Marabou Leech

To replace the Deer Hair Bug we lost today, decided on tying two Damsel Flies and a Marabou Leech instead.  We have been noticing a number of missed hooksets when Tenkara Fishing and Fly Fishing.  Seem to get a better hookset when the hook bend rests upward when fished.  Will see if tomorrow's outing yields more fish this next round!
