Out and About Podcast

...on another note, looked like Fshng84 sent in another report from Bethany Lakes while he was on a morning run. The Podcast is posted below, do check it out. Key notes this time were:

  • Trout were rising, surface activity looked promising for PowerWorms
  • Also, would try a Fishing Fly on a Bobber Fly Rig
  • Trout were taking Velveeta Cheese under a Bobber
  • Similar to other days when Super Dupers were getting bites, would anticipate the same today

iFishNews Fishing Podcast #20 | Lake Lavon Fishing | Juglining Gets a Nice Catfish!

Caught a nice size Catfish while fishing our local lake – Lake Lavon. Caught it on juglines fished in 10 feet of water. Caught other smaller Catfish; the largest went 32 inches! Was fishing from a kayak.

Decided it was better to and it at the boat ramp.  For this podcast, we summarize the trip and point out some key lessons learned to take with us on the next trip!

See our Podcast Page at iFishNews Fishing Podcast.

iFishNews Fishing Podcast #18 - Cast Nets Anyone? #baitfishing iFishNews Fishing Podcast #18 - Cast Nets Anyone? #baitfishing

This round we talk about cast nets and catching bait… shad in particular.  Recently, we learned we could freeze shad for use at other lakes. That said, it’s has been hit or miss catching them. But, we do have a few bags ready to go for our next fishing trip.

Do check out this week’s podcast where we talk about where, how, and why we cast net for bait!

iFishNews Fishing Podcast #16 - Cast Net Repair, GoFish Camera, and Kayak Juglining!

This round we provide another update on the Team’s fishing activities this past week! Temps are in the 100s but somehow we have made the effort to continue fishing or at least do things related to fishing.

We started out making much needed repairs to our Cast Net, broken braille lines and temp fixes were hindering our abililty to use fresh shad for Stripers, Gar, and Catfish!

Next, the GoFish Camera arrived, have started fish scouting local ponds with some promising results. Hope to twaek our rig to get better action shots and clearer video of the fish.

And then, the Saturday trip to Lake Lavon made for some fun times catching Catfish on juglines for the Beer Batter Fish Fry that evening… plus a nice Gar went for one of our lines; fun time playing with that one before finally releasing it.

Have more things – fishing things, to do this next week. Do check back for another update!

iFishNews Fishing Podcast 11 - Denison Dam Observations

Lucked out and was able to fish Denison Dam – tailrace to Lake Texoma, two days in a row. First day, temps were in the 90s and the river was flowing while they were generating power. Next day, cold front rolled in, dropping the temps to the 60s. No power generations, minimal water flow… able to observe what a difference a day makes – specifically, the river and the change in water level. Do listen in on the Podcast, or check out the video version on our YouTube Channel – COAF Field Team!

iFishNews Fishing Podcast #7 - More Jugline Fishing on Lake Lavon

Had a fun time fishing with jug lines this past Saturday. Posted the video on our YouTube Channel – COAF Field Team. Here is an accompanying iFishNews Fishing Podcast to point out a few lessons learned this round!

Key Take Aways:

  • Have a backup plan for bait. Cooler temps and windy conditions, changed the pattern. No Shad at first. Luckily, able to pickup Nightcrawlers at a bait shop / convenience store.
  • Adjust for wind, if too windy… move to calmer waters. In our case, across the cove to a leeward shoreline.
  • Don’t wind the jugline’s line. The up and down motion resuls in a slack in the line, giving the chance for the Catfish to twist off the hook Instead, retrieve the line, keeping a steady strain on the line to keep the fish from throwing the hook.
  • Circle Hooks tended to work better when the Catfish were slowly taking the bait and setting the hooks themselves. J-Hooks tended to work better when the Catfish struck hard on the first bite and then started to run. Best to have both available, and adjust as needed.
  • Adjust jugline pattern starting sets shallow, deeper, and along a bottom slope and/or humps… move to the “money zone” concentrating the juglines as the Catfish tend to one of the sets.

All for now, and Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Five Tips For Fly Fishing in a Kayak #kayaking #flyfishing

Made the run to the local lake for some fun fly fishing fun for White Bass. Took the kayak and made it to a fishing area that had lots of opportunity to catch a fish or two.

From past trips, made a few adjustments to make this trip go much smoother when fishing from a kayak in a seated position. Here are five tips for fly fishing in a kayak:

  1. OPST Commando Head and Coated Running Line made for ease of casting from the sitting position. Much easier compared to the traditional weight forward setup we were using.
  2. Minimize Clutter in the Kayak Cockpit. Lots of chances to foul your line; keep things stored in your lifejacket or tucked under it like your nippers and forceps will reduce line fouling while still at the ready when needed.
  3. Line Management. May need to take up line and fight the fish on the reel, else allow the line to float on one side of the kayak. Do risk the chance of the fish running into the line. Be prepared to fight on the reel.
  4. Railblaza Rod Holder or other rod holder that has a locking mechanism to prevent the fly rod from falling overboard.
  5. Troll to/from the fishing area. Increase the “line in the water” and possibly hook into a nice fish while paddling to your fishing destination. And then, on the way back… do the same. Don’t be surprised if this technique saves your trip from a strike out!
