High Contrast Fly Works on Bluegill — Live Pond Highlight

Some days on the pond are all about small tweaks that make a big difference. This live highlight is one of those moments. Average Angler Life tied on a bold, high‑contrast fly and tossed it at some shallow bluegill — and they didn’t hesitate. Quick eats, clear takes, and a clean release.

It’s a simple reminder that sometimes all it takes is a fly they can really see. When visibility is mixed or fish are cruising tight to the bank, contrast can be the secret sauce that turns curiosity into commitment.

More green trout on the fly. 💚🎣

When the fish are biting, sometimes the smartest move is the simplest one: don’t change the pattern. This quick live highlight captures that exact moment. Average Angler Life stayed with the same fly that had already been producing, and sure enough — another “green trout” (bass) came up and proved the point.

It’s a clean, honest slice of pond fly fishing: a confident cast, a willing bass, and a reminder that when the bite is on, you don’t always need to switch things up. Trust the pattern, trust the moment, and let the fish tell you what they want.

Green Trout (Bass) on the Fly

Some fly‑fishing moments happen fast — a flash, a thump, and suddenly a bass is in the air. This quick highlight captures one of those pure, energetic pond moments. Average Angler Life hooked into a feisty “green trout” (our fun nickname for bass), and this one came up jumping like it had something to prove.

Caught on the fly and released to get even bigger, this clip is a reminder of why pond fly fishing is so addictive. You never know when a bass is going to rocket out of the weeds, hit your fly, and give you a few seconds of pure adrenaline before swimming off strong.

Spotted Bass in the Salad

Some of the best bass never show themselves until you’re willing to throw right into the salad. This quick highlight captures one of those moments — a spotted bass buried deep in the greenery, waiting for the perfect ambush. Average Angler Life was working the edges of a weedy Texas pond when a subtle flash and a sudden thump turned a patch of salad into a full-on fight.

Thick weeds, mats, and floating salad aren’t just obstacles — they’re shade, cover, and ambush points. When you’re willing to cast into that chaos, you start to see how much life is hiding where most anglers refuse to throw. This highlight is a reminder that even when the pond looks choked out, there’s still plenty of action under the green.

Pond Fishing Quick Trip aka Grocery Shopping?

Running errands to the local grocery store that happens to have a small pond. As luck would have it, had the 5wt Redington Classic Trout rod, Echo Ion reel, and OPST Commando Head in the pickup… wonder who put it there? LOL! Foam Grasshopper did well again with a several Bluegill and a Bass caught and released before I went to the grocery store.
