Denison Dam Fishing | Lots of Stripers on the Fly!

Lotta fun fishing Denison Dam Saturday for Striped Bass! Brought the Cabelas TLR 6wt Switch Rod with the Echo Ion 6/7 Wt Fly Reel and the OPST Skagit Head.

Bite was good on small stripers hitting on the Denison Dam Dawber, Bennet’s Lunch, Bucktail and Craft Fur Clouser Minnows.

Fast retrieves using short pulls and fast pulls worked, then they wanted a 10 count delay, later a 5 count delay, and then later no delay in the start of the retrieve.

Also, did get better hook up rates by dipping the rod tip in the water while retrieving. And then… later had a high stick, sweep the rod style retrieve that seemed to work well.

All of this before the started generating power.

After they started generating, then it was cast upriver, let the fly drift downriver and swing the fly, and then twitch the fly as you retrieved in back upriver at an angle.

Learned lots while there… bottomline: vary your retrieve, change fishing flies, and adjust to the fish as the pattern changes!

Bass Fly Fishing with the Discount Switch Rod #foamgrasshopper

Stopped at Crowley Park in Richardson on the commute. Fished the 2wt Discount Switch Rod and a Foam Grasshopper to catch a Bass or two! Lotta fun… Bass tended to strike when the hopper was sitting still. Slow stop and go was the key! Fum stuff!

Turner Falls This Round

Tried a new place this round. Headed to Davis, Oklahoma to Turner Falls Park. The River was stocked recently with Rainbow Trout; decided to give it a try.

Nice scenery with a Waterfall area and a River that is easily accessible since there is a street and sidewalk area that runs alongside it.

However, don't be fooled by the park like setting, the pools, pockets, and riffles offer the same challenges when fishing other Rivers. There is a rocky bank to contend with, else it is a fisherman friendly river.

Even better, the fish were in a biting mood! Lost count after twenty, limited out with five (park limit is five trout), three were nice sized ranging from 14"-16" in size.

That said, had already limited out, so the two larger ones were caught and released.

Used an Olive Near Deere to catch most of them, and then switched to a White Near Deere after running out of Olive. Two largest went for the White Near Deere.

Fun stuff... there is a Park Entrance Fee ($16.00 plus tax). However, given the chance at a Bruiser or two, the ease of access, the really nice Restrooms (heated, too), and only saw two other fishermen all day, was okay with it!

Quick Trip This Round with the Switch Rod....

Rain and other commitments had us sidetracked today. No worries; went for a quick trip to Bethany Lakes this round. Brought the Switch Rod and tied on the Tandem Rigged Near Deere and GRHEN setup that worked well on the Blue River in Oklahoma.

Things were promising with a nice Bass hooked but lost when it broke the line. After a few more casts, had another one take but this time it threw the hook. Finally, third time was a charm... hooked and landed a Bass.

So, this round two misses and one Bass! Fun stuff!

Switch Rod and a Senko... Swenko This Round!

Took out the Switch Rod and tied on a Gander Mountain Senko, and then fished Bethany Lakes this evening.  Missed several Bass but after a short while was able to time the hook set... managed to catch eight Bass this round. For reference, calling this Swenko Fishing! Fun stuff!

Damsel Flies This Round

Brought the Switch Rod and fished Plano East Senior High School's catch and release ponds. Slow action this time but did manage to hook up with four fish.  First one was a little Bluegill that went for a Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  Second one was a Sunfish that also went for the Damsel Fly. Next, was a Catfish that went for a Tube Damsel Fly in purple marabou.  Last one was a Bass that took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly as well.  Took a quick measure of the Bass; went just under 15"!  Fun stuff!

Bite Was Good at Towne Lake This Morning!

Bite was good at Towne Lake this morning!  Brought the Switch Rod and was able to make long cast to the middle of the pond and get a Trout or two or three.  Fast retrieve was the key at first.  Then, a slower (drifting) retrieve worked.

Did see others doing well on small Nymphs, Wooley Buggers, and Midges as well as Silver Super Dupers. Ended the morning with a limit of Trout!

Two Trout and Two Bluegill This Round

Fished Murphy City Hall Pond again this evening.  Late start but was there in time to get one Trout before dark and one Trout just at dark.  Did miss a couple, and also caught two Bluegill that went for the COAF Guadalupana!

Used the Switch Rod to gain more distance on the cast but as it turned out, both Trout were caught well within casting distance obtained on the little Four Weight Rod used yesterday.

More Action at Frisco

Fished Frisco Commons this morning.  Hooked up using the Gold Super Duper, then switched to the fly rod and caught three more to make a limit using a new fishing fly.

No name for it yet; tied like the COAF Guadalupana but with White Marabou and a Gold Tinsel for the body. Needed something with Gold in it.

After limiting out, did some catch and release fishing.  Was able to hook up with a couple more Trout and a Bluegill!  Fun Stuff!

Another Tough Round at Frisco Commons....

Made it back this afternoon to Frisco.  Trout still were lurking near the bank, and they were picky, picky, picky.

After changing fishing flies several times, finally hooked up with one using a variant of the COAF Guadalupana - tied using a Size 12 Caddis Hook, else it's the same pattern.

Also, noticed a steady retrieve as a school passed would usually attract the one hungry Trout to break from its buddies and strike.

Managed to limit out, even did some catch and release, as well as catch a little Bluegill.  No foul hooked fish; all struck the fishing fly and were hooked in the mouth.

Overcast and cold, but still has a good time once we figured the pattern!

Tough Go at Frisco Commons Today

Finally able to wet a line today.  Fished Frisco Commons this afternoon; the pond was stocked this morning and the City held its annual kid fishing derby.

Tough go today.  Fish seemed in shock, staying near the bank and were lock jawed at times.

After several looks at a Guadalupana, finally had one take the fishing fly.  Switch Rod worked out well; was able to make long switch cast (and roll cast) with ease.  Too bad distance did not matter today.

Then, switched to an Ultralight Rig and a Silver Kastmaster; had tried a Gold Super Duper, a Copper Super Duper, and a White Roostertail without a bite.  Looked like silver was the color of choice today.

Tried casting the spoon, used a steady retrieve, a stop and go retrieve, as well as a count down before reeling in.  No luck... what worked?  Jigging the lure up and down like when ice fishing. As a school would pass, one or two would show interest, the remainder would keep going by.

Later, jigging up and down, and then slowly moving the lure away would get one or two to break from where the school was "holed" up, and then a light strike and hook up would follow.

Fun stuff... was different seeing so many Trout so close to the bank; even got some underwater video of a school or two going by!

Question: What Fly Line Do We Use On Our Switch Rod?

Had a question from a Reader about the fly line we use for our switch rod.

We use a 6 Weight Switch Rod.  The fly line we use is a 9 Weight Ambush Triangle Taper from Royal Wulff.  Ordered it online from Red's Fly Shop.

Really like the fly line; really liked the fast shipping from Red's Fly Shop; works great with the Cabelas TLR 11' 6-Wt Switch Rod!

Another Round at Rio Raft... Caught a Trout!

Fished the Guadalupe River at the Rio Raft access point today.  Was a really nice day, saw several Rainbow Trout but only managed to catch one!

It went 16" in length, too small for the minimum limit for the area we were fishing but still had a great time catching him.

Used a 6wt Switch Rod and a Tandem Midge and Prince Nymph Rig.  Trout struck the Prince Nymph!

Did work a pool for about an hour plus that had Trout feeding on something but could not get them to strike.

Tried midges, nymphs, dry flies, san juan worms, wooley buggers, guadalupanas,... the kitchen sink!  No worries though,... the 16" Rainbow Trout that went for the Prince Nymph was a great consolation prize!

Only One This Round But It Was a Nice One!

Only one this round but it was a nice one.  A Catfish that went for a BH Olive Wooley Bugger. Used the Switch Rod and a Strike Indicator set up.  Glad to have used the indicator; Catfish took the fishing fly lightly.  Barely even moved when it struck.  Measured the Catfish; went almost 21" in size!

Panfish This Round

Fished the pond by the City of College Station Police Department.  No Bruisers this round; just panfish using fishing flies.  Still had fun.  Did see a few catching Bass and Catfish though!

On The Guadalupe This Round

Had a chance to check out a place we never had fished yesterday.  Heard promising things about fishing the Guadalupe River at the Rio Raft Access Point.  It's in the special restriction section that has an 18" Minimum, 1 Trout per day limit and only artificials can be used.  No worries though, caught zero Trout but still had a good time.  Action was slow with only a little Bass and two Longear Sunfish caught and released.  Even better that we were the only ones fishing that section at times!

Fun With Bluegill This Round

Had a tough time getting out to go fishing this week but finally broke away to get a round in at Bethany.  Started out trying for Bass; things looked promising when we saw a few chasing bait fish in the shallows.  But, failed to get their interest using the fishing flies we had.  Then, noticed a lot of flying insects moving about, so switched to a dry fly to work the Bluegill that were feeding on them.  Lots of misses at first but switched to a smaller dry fly and was able to hook a few!  Fun stuff!

Oak Point This Round

Went back out this afternoon for more fishing. Checked out Oak Point Preserve in Plano. Worked the shallows and managed to catch three little Bass and a Bluegill.  Did see several nice sized Bass but were not interested in fishing flies.  Till next time!

Another Round; Slow Action, Two Bluegill and a Miss

Went fishing this morning.  Arbor Day Celebration ongoing.  The parking lot was full.  Lots of new trees planted.  Can tell the designer was not a fisherman.  Several trees were planted close to the bank and easily hang up a cast or two.  Also, noticed they did not take into account the normal water level of the Horseshoe Pond... no worries.  Although the action was slow, did catch a couple of Bluegill and missed a Bass.

Switch Rod This Round....

Ordered a Switch Rod the other week online from Cabelas.  Came in late yesterday; too late to try it out then.  Did make it to Bethany this evening and fished with it.  Missed one fish, and then caught two Bass and a Bluegill using a Grasshopper. Need to practice more; opted to fish it one-handed.  Really liked the extra distance with minimal false casts!
