Dry Flies at Waterloo This Round (Feb 15, 2015)

Fun time in Denison today. Nuclaroche and I fished Waterloo Park Pond. After a lot of missed hook sets to rising trout feeding on little, black bugs, we figured out the pattern - a COAF Griffith's Gnat in Size 16!

The Trout started out taking dry flies on a dead drift but as the wind picked up and the insects started "skittering" on the surface more, the Trout were wanting more movement on the dry fly.

Fun day, especially being able to catch them on dry flies. Also, had lots of fun casting and catching fish using the COAF Micro Fly Rod!

Saturday Morning…? [1-03-2015]

Originally published January 3, 2015

Saturday morning... Looks like the rain is letting up. Checked the local ponds and noted water levels are up.

Have not heard from the Team about the action at Bethany Lakes but will post an update as soon as they report in.

That said, here is a picture showing the water is flowing at Bethany Creek Pond (just up the road from Bethany Lakes)!

Water is flowing!

PS: City of Denison is hosting a Trout Derby today at Waterloo Park Pond! For more info, go to the city's website.

Bethany Lakes Saturday Morning, then Waterloo in the Afternoon [12-21-2014]

Originally posted 2014/12/21

The Team confirmed one of our own graduated with an Engineering Degree from Texas A&M University! Now, it's back to fishing again!

Bethany Lakes in Allen

Reports from the Team indicated the action Saturday morning was steady for some while slow for others. In the Team's case, one Rainbow Trout fell for an Olive Wooley Bugger at Bethany Lakes in Allen.

Key notes from the morning round were:

  • Slow retrieve and/or stop and go retrieve seemed to work
  • Casting spoons like Super Dupers in Gold and Silver and Mini-Jigs were getting strikes
  • Bubble Fly Rig cast to fish feeding near the surface were getting strikes
  • Fish were also taking PowerBait and PowerWorms
  • Action was steady initially but tapered off with the exception of the Bubble Fly Rig.
  • Action remained steady for the rig (see the section titled Bubble Fly Rig in the article "Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing - Community Lakes")

Waterloo Park Pond in Denison

Saturday afternoon the action picked up when the Team headed to Waterloo Park Pond in Denison. The Team limited out using an Olive Near Deere, Copper Super Duper, and a Power Bait.

Key notes from the afternoon round were:

  • Near Deere was getting strikes as it sank slowly on no retrieve
  • Super Duper was also getting strikes as it sank slowly or when fished slow
  • Fish were also taking PowerBait, PowerWorms, Corn, and Salmon Eggs
PS: The city of Denison posted a sign advertising their upcoming trout derbies. Three are planned; for more details of Denison's trout derbies as well as other trout derbies, check them out in the FAQs section of StockerTroutFishing.com.  It is listed under Trout Derbies.

iFishNews Fishing Podcast 11 - Denison Dam Observations

Lucked out and was able to fish Denison Dam – tailrace to Lake Texoma, two days in a row. First day, temps were in the 90s and the river was flowing while they were generating power. Next day, cold front rolled in, dropping the temps to the 60s. No power generations, minimal water flow… able to observe what a difference a day makes – specifically, the river and the change in water level. Do listen in on the Podcast, or check out the video version on our YouTube Channel – COAF Field Team!

Tough Go This Round at Waterloo

Headed up to Denison this morning. Tough go this round at Waterloo Park Pond. Two of us fished, but only one of us limited out.

Took a while to figure out the pattern; turned out a BH GRHEN under a strike indicator did the trick at least for Fshng84. NucLaroche had a couple of missed hook sets, else he struck out.

Still a fun time despite the cold temps. Video/report posted at StockerTroutFishing.com!

Back to Waterloo... COAF Guadalupana Does Well!

More fun at Waterloo in Denison.  Missed the Youth Trout Derby but did not miss out on the stocked Trout!  Windy day but the Four Weight Rod did its job; limited out using size 14 COAF Guadalupana!  Fun stuff!

Light Strikes at Waterloo This Round

Headed to Denison Saturday afternoon and fished Waterloo.  Recently stocked in preparation for the Trout Derby held that morning; the bite was steady.

Three of us fished and managed to take three limits.  NucLaroche and T-Bone caught them on PowerBait and Ultralight Gear.  Fshng84 fished a COAF Guadalupana and a Four Weight Fly Rod.

The strikes were light but the Team did manage to take five each! Even caught one of the tagged Trout from the Derby!  Fun stuff!

Slower But Steady Action at Waterloo This Round

Headed back to Denison this morning.  A layer of ice was showing on parts of the pond.  No worries, the Rainbow Trout were still biting.

Action was slower compared to yesterday but was steady!  Was able to get a limit of five; also saw others limiting out, too.  Used PowerBait Trout Dough Bait with Glitter and Extra Scent and an Ultralight Rod. Tried catching them with fishing flies but had no takers.

Fun time with cold temps but no wind and lots of sun!
PS:  Used Trout Fishing Rig #3 as noted in the online article - PowerBait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout.  The pond at Waterloo has a fountain that made a strong current where the Trout were lurking.  The rig worked well and held in place and made for more consistent hook ups!

Windy Day at Waterloo....

Was a windy day at Waterloo; luckily the Rainbow Trout were not bothered by it.  Steady action on the Guadalupana as well as Bread and Powerbait.  Two of us fished; two of us limited out!  Fun stuff!

Rainbow Trout at Waterloo

Fished Waterloo Park Pond in Denison.  Caught Rainbow Trout using Powerbait in Rainbow Trout Glitter and the Guadalupana fishing fly.  We managed to catch our limit with five Trout each; no Bruisers... just small Stockers but still a lot of fun especially on the flyrod.

Made a short video; had an issue with the video editing... two images instead of one.  Something about 3D video.  Was going to redo it for 2D but had already deleted the original video.  Regardless, the video does give the sense that the pond is little and the Trout were biting!
