Rapala X-Rap One-Lure Challenge – Twitchy Retrieve on Shimano Curado BFS-XG (Bass on the Pause)

Rapala X-Rap One-Lure Challenge – Bass on the Pause | Average Angler Life

One Lure. One Pause.

Rapala X-Rap on Shimano Curado BFS-XG — twitchy retrieve and a bass that struck while it suspended

What happens when you commit to one lure and fish it the right way?

I took the Rapala X-Rap out for a one-lure challenge on ultralight baitcasting gear — the Shimano Curado BFS-XG — and focused on a sharp, twitchy retrieve. The key moment came on the pause: the lure suspended at depth and a bass crushed it.

That’s the beauty of a well-worked X-Rap. The aggressive twitches get their attention, but the pause is often when they commit. Simple, unscripted, and all about reading the lure and the fish in real time.

In this short session you’ll see the exact retrieve cadence I used, how the X-Rap behaves when it suspends, and why that pause can be the difference between a follow and a solid hookup.

If you love finesse bass fishing, BFS setups, or just want a clear look at how a classic jerkbait can still produce when you give it the right action, this one’s for you.

Tight lines — sometimes the best strike comes when everything stops.

Ultralight Baitcasting for Bass – Rooster Tail on BFS Gear + Got a Jumper!

Ultralight Baitcasting for Bass – Rooster Tail on BFS Gear + Got a Jumper! 🎣

Ultralight Baitcasting for Bass

Rooster Tail on BFS Gear + Got a Jumper! 🎣 | Average Angler Life

Ultralight baitcasting for bass with inline spinners! In this session I was throwing a Rooster Tail on BFS gear and connected with a solid bass that went airborne — got a jumper!

The light setup made the fight fun and the classic spinner once again proved why it remains a go-to for pond and shoreline bass. Simple lure, sensitive gear, and exciting surface action.

Light gear + classic spinners = exciting jumper bass!

There’s something special about watching a bass clear the water on ultralight tackle.

Ultralight Baitcasting One-Lure Challenge – Rapala X-Rap on Shimano Scorpion BFS-XG

Ultralight Baitcasting One-Lure Challenge – Rapala X-Rap on Shimano Scorpion BFS 🎣

Ultralight Baitcasting One-Lure Challenge

Rapala X-Rap on Shimano Scorpion BFS-XG 🎣 | Average Angler Life

More ultralight baitcasting action! This round I paired the Shimano Scorpion BFS-XG reel with a Berkley Lightning Rod and stuck to just one lure — the Rapala X-Rap — for a one-lure challenge at the pond.

Managed three fish total, and this one was the first of the day. It struck right at the end of the retrieve, which further reinforces the need to finish every retrieve all the way in. Don’t stop short!

Finish every retrieve all the way in — you never know when they’ll hit!

The combo felt great, the X-Rap did its job, and the session was a solid reminder that sometimes limiting yourself to one lure can be both fun and productive.

What’s your favorite lure for a one-lure challenge? Let me know in the comments!

Out on the water working a Rapala X-Rap near the rocks with my ultralight baitcasting setup — and this bass came in hot! Nice solid strike, a short but fun fight, and we got him in the net.

Bass With Shoulders — Ultralight Baitcasting Live Highlight

Some bass just feel different the moment they load up on the rod. In this live highlight, Average Angler Life is working ultralight baitcasting gear when a bass with real shoulders shows up. The first hit doesn’t quite connect, but one more cast back to the same spot seals the deal. Light tackle, quick reaction, and a fish that makes the whole setup come alive.

Ultralight baitcasting has a way of turning even a routine pond trip into something exciting. Every thump feels bigger, every run feels stronger, and every fish feels earned. This moment captures that perfectly—a quick miss, a reset, and then that satisfying connection that makes you say, “Got him!”

If you love light gear, pond bass, and those “one more cast” payoffs, this highlight is right in that sweet spot.

Best fishing advice, can't catch them if... 🤣 #bfsfishing #bassfishing #tips

Fishing Suggestion aka Tip

Ultralight Baitcasting for Bass is fun. One important tip that applies to fishing in general, be sure to keep your lure (or bait, fishing fly,...) in the water. Else, you cannot catch fish otherwise. LOL.

Live Bait BFS Combo Round 1 - Fly Fishing for Bait, Then Freelining BFS Style!

Live Bait BFS Combo Worked!

First round with the live bait BFS Combo where I fish using ultralight baitcasting gear to cast live baitfish with no hardware other than the hook!

Round 1 was a success once I figured out how to hook the bluegill I was using for bait. Lips and dorsal fin were a no go; the fish would head for cover quickly and clobber the hook.

Anal fin worked best. Fish swam towards the surface and away from the bank.  And in the end, a nice Bass took the Bluegill!

More Ultralight Baitcasting (Edited) #Mobile #Fishing #Livestream

Another Round But Cut Short By High Temps!

The edited version of the Mobile Fishing Livestream video where I start fishing a 3D Printed Lure, then switch to a Rooster Tail Inline Spinner.

Key Highlights:

  • 3D Lure needed adjustments. Balance and action were not natural. No fish on the 3D Lure.
  • Fish were deeper as anticipated given the 100+ Temps. Countdown retrieve using an 8 count seemed to work best.
  • Be sure to watch the phone and the livestream status as the heat cut short the livestream!

Unleash Your Ultralight Fishing Passion by Creating Custom Inline Spinners for BFS Fishing!

Custom Inline Spinners for BFS Fishing.

With a few essential tools and materials, you can craft inline spinners that perfectly suit your fishing style and target species. Start by selecting the right wire, beads, and blades. The choice of blade is crucial as it determines the spinner's action in the water. Willow blades provide a tight, fast vibration, while Colorado blades offer a slower, more pronounced thump.

Next, thread your components onto the wire shaft in the order that ensures maximum attraction to the fish. Begin with a clevis to hold the blade, followed by a series of brightly colored beads to catch the fish's eye. You can also add a small brass or tungsten weight to help the spinner sink to the desired depth quickly.

Once you have your spinner assembled, use a pair of pliers to form a secure loop at the end of the wire, ensuring that all components stay in place. Consider tying a feathered treble hook to the end for added movement and visual appeal.

Experiment with different color combinations, blade sizes, and weights to find what works best in your local waters. By customizing your inline spinners, you'll not only increase your chances of landing more fish but also add a personal touch to your fishing gear, making every catch even more rewarding. Happy fishing!

Success Tip: Use Ultralight Lures to Entice Wary Bass to Strike!!

Smaller May Be Better!

Whether you're fishing in clear waters or heavily pressured lakes, ultralight lures can make all the difference.

These small, subtle baits mimic the natural prey that bass are accustomed to, making them more likely to bite even when they are feeling cautious.

Additionally, ultralight lures can be fished with finesse techniques, such as slow retrieves or gentle twitches, to further entice reluctant bass.

Pair your ultralight lure with a light line and a sensitive rod to detect even the slightest nibble.

Remember, patience and precision are key when targeting wary bass. Happy fishing!

More Ultralight Baitcasting #mobile #fishing #livestream

Un-Edited version of today's Mobile Fishing Livestream. This round I fish a Z-Man Ned Rig for Bass.

Really like the durability of the plastic TRD Pumpkin Worm.

Fish it like a Senko... cast it, then slowly bump it along bottom, watching the line for Bass picking up the lure and running with it!

Fishing Lake Glenn #gopro #livestream #baitfinesse

Another in the GoPro Mobile Fishing Livestream Series! This one has me at Lake Glenn in Arlington, Texas!

Fishing with an Ultralight Baitcaster Combo - Shimano Scorpion 17 BFS-XG Reel, Bass Pro Shops MicroLite Fiberglass Rod, and 4lbs Stren and using Z-Man Micro Finesse Ned Rig in Green Pumpkin and a 1/15oz Jig Head.

Bait Finesse gear cast the rig easily save for the windy conditions that had me clearing a backlash or two.

Managed several Bass, no Bruisers but lots of fun on the ultralight gear!

Ultralight Baitcasting Lures - Let's Talk Fishing #livestream #fishing #tips

This round I continue to work through streaming hardware issues as I learn to use the system. Gotta little more "learnings" to do!

That said, I managed to show the different lures I use when ultralight baitcasting aka BFS Fishing. They range from inline spinners to small crankbait and other lures as well as a few vintage ones from the past!

Of note are the 1/16oz Rooster Tails that seem to work on local ponds.  Additionally, there was one vintage lure I used to catch a nice one - see video below.

Do check it out!

Try These Trout Fishing Lures 😃 #fishing #ultralightfishing #tips

What is in our tackle box when ultralight baitcasting aka BFS Fishing? Here is a video short detailing what we like!

Of note are the Super Dupers in Copper, Gold, Silver, and Rainbow Trout!

  • Fish them low and slow when the trout are holding deep.
  • If active in the upper part of the water column, then fish them with a steady retrieve.
  • Additionally, if no takers on either retrieve, then try a "stop and go retrieve" by reeling in, and then pausing for a second or two.
  • Wait for a strike as Super Duper slowly sinks and flutters on the pause!

Also, Mepps Inline Spinners in Copper, Gold, and Silver hold a spot in our tackle box.

  • Fish them with a steady retrieve and when the trout are holding in the upper part of the water column.
  • Adjust the retrieve by reeling faster or slower until you get a strike. A "stop and go retrieve" may be called for on occasion.
  • But, typically, it is lure blade color and the trout's location in the water column that matter more.

Rooster Tails in a variety of color combinations are another lure we keep handy.

  • Start with the Fire Tiger, White, Yellow, and Black. And then, expand to other color combinations - blade, lure body, dressing.
  • Fish them like the Mepps but take the slow retrieve on step further and reel it slower! The Rooster Tail blade will spin at the slowest retrieve which will come in handy when the trout are picky.
  • But, do take note, when sight casting to passing trout schools, a faster retrieve may be called for when on trout breaks away and you see its V wake head toward the lure!

Ultralight Baitcasting for Trout on the Blue River in Oklahoma!

Fished the Blue River for trout this round. Opted for Super Dupers and Ultralight Fishing Gear. Three of us fished - two fished with Ultralight Spinning Gear and yours truly fished with Ultralight Baitcasting gear.

Cold front rolled in the night before dropping the temps below freezing. Anticipating trout tending deeper, decided to fish Super Dupers.

Stopped at Scotty's Blue River One Stop to restock on Super Dupers - picked up Rainbow Trout, Silver, and Copper Super Dupers to add to the gold and silver ones I  already had.

After a quick check at the low water crossing, went downriver to fish. After finding the pattern limited out with three trout each!

PS: Yours truly wore hip waders and went a little too deep. Lesson learned where Pants Waders or Chest Waders.  Also, we did have a wading boot blowout after many seasons. Secured the sole with rope to make it last one more trip. It worked... and has now been retired.
