Quick Trip to Bethany This Round

Already missing the coast... did make it to the local pond for a quick trip. Slow action with a little Bluegill and Sunfish caught, and then missed strikes and spooked a fish.

PS: Learned today that any color jug line float other than orange is legal for Texas recreational fishermen starting September 1, 2014! Here is the TPWD Link.

Slow Go This Round at Bethany... Caught a Few Little Ones!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Slow action but still beats working. Had a few missed strikes on Bass, and then started hooking up with little Sunfish and Bluegill. Caught them using various fishing flies. Did feel the temps drop when a front arrived. Luckily, the rain held until later this evening. Fun stuff!

Slow Go This Round

Slow go this round. Fished Bethany this evening; was not able to go earlier this week. Lots of rain though, so it's all good. Managed to catch three Bluegill... first one went for a Guadalupana, next one wanted a Foam Grasshopper, and the last one took a Balsa Popper Fly.  Did have several missed strikes from Bass and Bluegill. Not sure why so many missed strikes... guess that's what happens when you miss a week of fishing.

Found a Pattern This Round

Fished Bethany this morning. Started with a Foam Damsel Fly, then a COAF Guadalupana, and then a Foam Grasshopper. No luck with the Damsel Fly, one Bluegill on the Guadalupana, and one Bass on the Grasshopper.

Then, noticed small dragonfly looking bugs hovering over the water's surface. Not sure what they were, but they looked to be about a Size 12 and were reddish/brown. Found a Size 12 Dry Fly that had a little color to it in the fly box. Tied it on the line, and started hooking up with Bluegill and a couple of little Bass!

Fun stuff!

Slow Action This Round

Start the 4th of July Weekend with a quick trip to Bethany Lakes.  Had some rain earlier in the day; water levels were up and fish were feeding in the shallows. Things started of with a missed hook set, and then no hits for a while.  Then, lucked into a little Bluegill, and a couple of Bass.  All went for a Foam Damsel Fly!

Back to Bethany This Round

Hit Bethany this evening and caught a few fish - one Bass and some Bluegill; slower action but still good to get away! Used a COAF Foam Damsel Fly and a COAF Damsel Fly.  Fun stuff on a Four Weight!

Elk Hair Caddis This Time

Started out fishing a Grasshopper, then switched to a Foam Damsel Fly as well as a Tube Popper Fly and a Balsa Popper Fly. Had strikes but just were not hooking them. Went to an Elk Hair Caddis in Size 14 and started hooking up with Bass and Bluegill!  Fun stuff, even had some good tunes in the background from the Summer Sounds Concert that the City hosts.

Another Round... Foam Grasshopper Worked Well

Fished Bethany this evening. Started out fishing the Red and White Tube Fly that we used yesterday while kayak fishing. Had a strike and a miss, and then a hook up with a Bass.  Then, after no takes for a while, switched to a White Foam Grasshopper in Size 12.  Managed catching a couple more Bass, then lucked into a bed of Bluegill.  Caught a number of them, then switched to a Green Foam Grasshopper in Size 10.  Was able to catch a couple more Bass that went about 13", and then closed the round with one last Bluegill!  Fun stuff!

Tough Go This Round!

Had a tough time today. Only managed a few Bluegill and Sunfish. Did video of a Gar lurking in the water. Lots of weeds and algae since we were here during the Winter Trout Stocking in February.

More Fun Fishing

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Brought the Five Weight Fly Rod but this time replaced the reel with a 4/5 Weight Echo Ion. Liked the 8/10 Weight for the Switch Rod; decided to get the smaller size reel for the Five Weight!  Liked it, too!

Started fishing with a Foam Damsel Fly and caught Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass.  Did lose one to a decent Bass that broke the tippet.  Later, switched to a Tube Popper Fly.  Missed several nice looking fish; too slow on the hookset.  But, did get two Bass!

Fun stuff!

COAF Guadalupana, Balsa Popper Fly, and then a Foam Damsel Fly

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening.  Started out catching Bluegill using a COAF Guadalupana by the Waterfall. Then, worked the Main Pond; two missed strikes else no fish.  Began working the Back Pond and lucked into a bed of Bluegill; caught a number of them with a Balsa Popper Fly.  As the evening progressed, noticed the Dragonflies and Damselflies hovering about... switched to a Foam Damsel Fly and caught four Bass before calling it a trip.  Fun stuff... out of Foam Damsel Flies though; Bass really beat them up this time. Good thing they are an easy and fast pattern to tie!

Damsel Flies This Round

Brought the Switch Rod and fished Plano East Senior High School's catch and release ponds. Slow action this time but did manage to hook up with four fish.  First one was a little Bluegill that went for a Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  Second one was a Sunfish that also went for the Damsel Fly. Next, was a Catfish that went for a Tube Damsel Fly in purple marabou.  Last one was a Bass that took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly as well.  Took a quick measure of the Bass; went just under 15"!  Fun stuff!

A Bluegill This Round....

Fished Bethany Creek Park Pond and had a missed strike.  Moved on to Bethany Lakes and fished the Lower Pond.  Caught a Bluegill but missed several other strikes.  Then, one more time back to Bethany Creek Park Pond; missed one strike before calling it a day.  Not sure why; "mojo" was not on today with so many missed strikes!  Going to try again another day.

Tube Popper Fly and Bread Did Well This Round!

Went fishing at Bethany this evening. Bite was good with several Bass, a Bluegill, and a Sunfish caught using a Tube Popper Fly!  Then, noticed lots of activity in an area where ducks were fed bread. Guess what, put some bread on the treble hook and left the Tube Popper Fly on the line. Hooked three Catfish; one went 23"... Good stuff!

Bass Poppers This Round

Started out fishing a streamer but with so much algae to clobber the fishing fly, switched to Bass Poppers this round! Caught eight Bass and one Bluegill. Fun stuff!

Catfish, Bass, and a Bluegill Go For a COAF Damsel Fly This Round!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Late start on a windy day. Started out trying to get a Bass or two on a Tube Popper Fly. Two missed strikes and lots of wind to deal with made for a change. Decided to switch to a COAF Damsel Fly. The one we tie with Purple Marabou and Red Tying Thread. Used a Gold Bead Chain and size 10 hook (ran out of size 8 hooks).

Glad we switched to it; caught four Catfish, three Bass, and a Bluegill.  Three of the Catfish went 17"-18"; one went about 15". They put up a good fight especially on the four weight fly rod!
