Jug Line Fishing This Morning

Fished Ticky Creek Park (Lake Lavon) with Kayak Fishing Jug Lines this morning. Took the kayak this time; made for an easier portage to the lake compared to the jon boat.

While setting up at the boat ramp, had a Carp go swimming by. Also, was able to get some fresh bait - Shad, using the cast net. No need to buy th frozen bait this time.

After setting the jug lines, had a Gar on the line. Luckily, it came off; hate having to mess with them in a kayak. Rest of the morning caught a number of small Catfish and a couple of Gaspergou.

Did end the trip with four Keepers - three Blue Catfish and one Channel Catfish. Making them for dinner tonight with the Beer Batter Fish Fry recipe we posted online!

Fun stuff!

More Jug Line Fishing Today

Back to the Lake Lavon for more jug line fishing today. Boat ramp was closed at Ticky Creek but was able to launch from shore and get the jug lines set! Caught three Catfish, lost another one, and had several misses. Had a fun time.

Jug Lining This Round... Only One

Went Jug Line Fishing this morning. Set up six jug lines using the Kayak Fishing Jug Lines we described in the Jug Line Fishing article we posted some time back. Took the jon boat out instead of kayaks; after setting lines, did some trolling for White Bass. No White Bass but did get one Catfish on a jug line!  Had to deal with the wind every once in awhile as well as a boater running through the lines, else it was a fun time despite only getting the one.

Damsel Flies This Round

Brought the Switch Rod and fished Plano East Senior High School's catch and release ponds. Slow action this time but did manage to hook up with four fish.  First one was a little Bluegill that went for a Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  Second one was a Sunfish that also went for the Damsel Fly. Next, was a Catfish that went for a Tube Damsel Fly in purple marabou.  Last one was a Bass that took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly as well.  Took a quick measure of the Bass; went just under 15"!  Fun stuff!

Tube Popper Fly Goes to School!

Posted information about the Tube Popper Fly and the Mini Balsa Wood Lathe in the Fly Tying Forum.  A member posted pictures of Tube Popper Flies used for saltwater fishing which led to the idea of making a freshwater version of one!

Here is a picture of a prototype freshwater version; it's made with Marabou and a Balsa Wood Head that has been colored with a Sharpie.  No eyes and a quick coat of nail polish instead of epoxy.  Was in a rush to test it out....

So, tested it out at Plano East Senior High School's Catch and Release Ponds, and caught a Bass before losing the popper to a nice Bass that broke the line.  Oh well, put another Tube Popper Fly on the line (not like the prototype) and was able to catch Catfish!

Going to make more of the prototype freshwater version Tube Popper Fly.  Easy to shape and easy to make, and it catches fish!  Cannot beat that...!

Tube Popper Fly and Bread Did Well This Round!

Went fishing at Bethany this evening. Bite was good with several Bass, a Bluegill, and a Sunfish caught using a Tube Popper Fly!  Then, noticed lots of activity in an area where ducks were fed bread. Guess what, put some bread on the treble hook and left the Tube Popper Fly on the line. Hooked three Catfish; one went 23"... Good stuff!

Bread for Bait Still Works!

Headed to Bethany this morning; brought a fly rod but after a short while switched to a spinning rod and freelining bread. Caught 17 Catfish - a mix of small ones as well as ones that went ~17".  Did get one that went 19"!  Good to see the bread still works.  Had a lot of missed strikes, going to pick up more hooks later today.  Need to go with a slightly larger size hook.

Only Two This Round

Only two this round but did have several missed hook sets and break offs.  Had tied two Tube Damsel Flies - one Olive and one Purple. Was able to hook and land a 17.5" Catfish with the Olive one, and then lost the fishing fly to a break off.

Fished the Purple Damsel Fly and had several more missed hook sets, and then had a Bruiser break the line. Out of Tube Damsel Flies, switched to COAF Damsel Flies.  More missed hook sets, and then noticed people feeding ducks with bread.

Soon after the Catfish showed, so put up the fishing fly and switched to freelining bread. Good thing... ended up catching Catfish #2; measured 22"!  Fun stuff!

Posted pictures on the Fish Bulletin Board!

Catfish, Bass, and a Bluegill Go For a COAF Damsel Fly This Round!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Late start on a windy day. Started out trying to get a Bass or two on a Tube Popper Fly. Two missed strikes and lots of wind to deal with made for a change. Decided to switch to a COAF Damsel Fly. The one we tie with Purple Marabou and Red Tying Thread. Used a Gold Bead Chain and size 10 hook (ran out of size 8 hooks).

Glad we switched to it; caught four Catfish, three Bass, and a Bluegill.  Three of the Catfish went 17"-18"; one went about 15". They put up a good fight especially on the four weight fly rod!

Bethany Lakes For More Fishing!

Rain and more rain this morning. Decided to put on rain gear, and give Bethany Lakes a try. Good thing... caught Bass, a couple of Bruiser Catfish, and then lost a big one (think it was a Catfish).

Bent the fly rod double; same fly rod that was used to land a 6 pound bass several years ago. The Bass did not bend the fly rod near as much as the one that was lost today!  Fun stuff... good to know Bruisers are still lurking in the area.

The Bass, one of the Catfish, and the lost fish took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  The other Catfish went for a COAF San Juan Worm Ball. Fun stuff!

Missed a Couple But Did Get One!

Fished Bethany this afternoon; caught little Sunfish and Bluegill. Then, noticed several Catfish feeding on bread in the Canal.  Tried a Bread Fly, a Wooley Bugger, and a Leech without luck.

Decided to try a COAF San Juan Worm Ball - a variation of a San Juan Worm fishing fly that we tied this past Winter on a whim. Supposed to simulate a ball of worms rolling in the current.

Hooked a Bruiser but lost it while trying to land it, then hooked another - not as big, but lost it while trying to land it.  Finally, hooked and landed one that went about 18" in size!

For those that are interested, here is an article on how we tie a COAF San Juan Worm Ball.

Catfish and Bullheads on Bread!

Enjoying the later sunset since the time change this past weekend. Been tough getting a round in fishing but did manage to get out for a quick trip to Celebration Park's East Pond.

Fished with Bread and free-lined it using Spinning Gear.  Also, brought the hook setter we bought a couple of years or so ago. Was able to catch a Bullhead and a Catfish with the hook setter and another Bullhead without it.

The Bullheads went about 12" in size with big tummies probably from all the Bread in the water. The Catfish was a Bruiser, estimating ~22" in size!  This one makes the Fish Bulletin Board!

One Bass, One Catfish

Fished a Senko this morning at Bethany.  Had a strike and a miss, then a strike and a hook-up, and a strike and another miss!  One Bass on the Senko was the result.

Then, switched to Bread; caught a Catfish that went about 16" in size.  Took about 15" for the bite; tried one more cast using Bread.  No more hook-ups, so called it a morning.

Still a lot of fun.  Was good to see Senkos and Bread are working!

A Sunfish, a Little Catfish, and a Green LED Fishing Light Field Test

Fished Murphy City Hall Pond for Trout.  Ended up breaking off the last Size 12 COAF Guadalupana in the fly box.  Had been a consistent producer for Trout.  Gonna have to tie more and refill the fly box.

Switched to a Prince Nymph and struck out, then switched to Bread and started getting some strikes but no hook ups. Had brought a Bread Fly in hopes of hooking a fish with it.  Ended up catching a Sunfish and a little Catfish on Bread.

Did get a chance to test out the 6v Green LED Fishing Light.  Worked great; still working on the 9v version of it.  Circuit board is done; just need to get the PVC body completed.

Cold evening but still a lot of fun!

Only One This Round But It Was a Nice One!

Only one this round but it was a nice one.  A Catfish that went for a BH Olive Wooley Bugger. Used the Switch Rod and a Strike Indicator set up.  Glad to have used the indicator; Catfish took the fishing fly lightly.  Barely even moved when it struck.  Measured the Catfish; went almost 21" in size!

Slower Action This Round But Did Get a Nice Catfish!

Lost the Lefty Deceiver yesterday.  Tied another one and fished Bethany just before noon before it rained. Ended up losing it after a nice fish struck and broke the line.  Caught a little Bass on a Wooley Bugger on the next cast but decided to head back home and tie another Deceiver.  Made it back to Bethany after the rain passed, slower action but did manage several fish including a nice 20" Catfish that made the Fish Bulletin Board!

Soon after releasing the Catfish, ended up losing the Deceiver to a snag!  Re-tied another one later in the afternoon and returned to Bethany in the evening.  Caught two Bass before calling it quits!  Really liking this fishing fly!

Another Round at Bethany; Gets a Nice Catfish....

Another round at Bethany using Senkos.  Gotta surprise catching a 22" Catfish in the Canal! Another Catfish makes the Fishing Bulletin Board! Then, it was steady action catching Bass. Bass were either striking on the initial drop or taking the Senko on a slow drag along the bottom.  Caught six Bass this round. Fun stuff!

Inline Spinner Does Well, then Bread Gets a Catfish!

Fished Bethany this morning before the rain arrived.  Caught Bass and a Sunfish using inline spinners.  No Bruisers but was good to see the Bass were active.  Then, noticed something feeding on the surface on Bread.  Switched to Bread and freelined it.  Ended up catching a 20" Catfish! This one makes the Fishing Bulletin Board. Fun stuff!

Inline Spinner Did Well This Round

Checked out previous blog posts for September and noticed Inline Spinners and Spinnerbaits seemed to work well for the month.  Decided on using an Inline Spinner this round; caught six Bass, one Sunfish, and one Catfish.  The Catfish went 16" in length!  This one gets posted on the Fishing Bulletin Board.  Fun stuff... posted a video but for some reason could not keep track of the number of Bass caught.  Rechecked the videos; it's six Bass.

More Fun on the Fly at Bethany Lakes

Decided to give Bethany Lakes a try this morning.  With the recent rains, water level is up!  Took a Four Weight Fly Rod and Streamer Variants and worked the Main Pond, Lower Pond, and the Canal.  Struck out in the Lower Pond.  Did get three Bass in the Main Pond.  And, hooked a nice Catfish in the Canal that put a good strain on the Fly Rod.  But, it threw the hook so was not able to get a good picture of it.  Luckily, was able to get video before losing it!  Fun stuff!
