Another Go At RC Boat Fishing

Another go at Radio Control Boat Fishing.  Windy conditions again but did manage to catch one little Bullhead!  Made several changes from the setup we used yesterday.  This time used a Baitcasting Rod and Reel and a Rod Holder to better control the line... worked better than the Spinning Gear we used.  Liking this technique but will need to wait till the weather gets better and the wind calms down, or we need to get a bigger boat!

Made a Combination Stick Float / Slip-Bobber.

Decided to make a Bobber to replace the store bought one we used last night.  Wanted one that was more sensitive to light strikes and would have minimal drag when a fish bites.  Using material laying around the shop, was able to make one that turned out okay!  Tested it out at Celebration Park and caught three little (juvenile) Bluegill.  Calling it a Combination Stick Float and Slip-Bobber.  Similar to a Stick Float but has an eyelet on the end to allow rigging as a Slip-Bobber.

To make it, used the following material: a Wine Cork, Bamboo Skewer, Fishing Hook, Epoxy, and Dacron Fly-Tying Line.  For tools, used a Dremel Knife, Dremel Tool, Wood Rasp, Wire Cutters, and Sandpaper.  Other than the Wire Cutters to cut the Fishing Hook in half, making one is mainly shaping and sanding.

Bullheads on Bread and a Catfish at Celebration Park Starts the 2012 COAF Leader Board!

Fished the East Pond at Celebration Park this evening.  Used the Slip-Bobber Rig and Bread on light Spinning Gear.  Caught several Bullheads - seem to be bigger this year compared to last year.  Drought may not have impacted them as much thankfully!

While fishing the pond met another fisherman (Fishing54) who was using Hot Dogs for bait.  Caught a few Bullheads too, and then a decent Bruiser Catfish that went 17"-18" in size.  Easily made the COAF Leader Board for 2012!  Have since posted on the Board as the first entry of the year  Nice catch Fishing54!

Switched the Waterlogged Reel to Another Rod and Fished with Bread...

Switched the now fixed "waterlogged" reel to another fishing rod, and then took it to Celebration Park.  Was testing the waters to see if the Bruiser Catfish were still lurking in the East Pond.  Had several strikes and misses, but finally hooked and landed a 16" Catfish.  Caught it using Bread!  Posted a picture on the 2011 COAF Leader Board.

Water Levels are Low But One Bruiser Still Lurks!

Celebartion Park East Pond Gets Two Bullheads on Bread!

Stopped by the East Pond at Celebration Park at Lunch today.  Good thing as the thunderstorms are rolling in as we update this post!

Went with plain White Bread for this quick trip.  Had several bites and misses that looked to be decent size Catfish.  Ended the 30" outing with two Bullheads!

Afternoon Quick Trips Were Not Quick Trips!

Went back out again to brave the windy conditions and do more "field testing" of the Homemade Dough Bait.  Any excuse to justify fishing works for us!

Tried Bethany Lakes and fished the Dough Bait under a Float as well as Freeline.  Had more hits while using the Float; just could not make the hookset.  After awhile, was able to hook and land a Catfish that went about 17" in size.

Then, went to Celebration Park and had fun catching more Catfish and Bullheads!  No Bruisers with the Catfish going about 15" in size!  Fun stuff,....

Morning Quick Trips Produce a Few Fish!

Made a couple of quick trips - Bethany Lakes and Celebration Park.  Caught one little Bass on an Olive Crawdad using theTenkara Rod at Bethany, and then fished with Homemade Dough Bait at the East Pond in Celebration Park.

Caught as well as lost a few fish at Celebration Park.  But, did manage to land three Catfish/Bullheads.  Largest fish was a Catfish that went just under 18" in size!

PS:  Homemade Dough Bait recipe we used is posted on our partner Squidoo Lens: Homemade Dough Bait!  Give it a try when you get a chance.

Celebration Park - Bullheads and Catfish On Bread....

Decided to checkout the Catfish at Celebration Park's East Pond.  Caught a few Bullheads and one Catfish that went about 16".  Not a bad outing on a nice day!

The angle of the Catfish picture makes it look smaller than 16". Bear with us as we work on better photos....  Regardless, still fun to catch them on Bread and light tackle!

Celebration Park Catfish Continue to Bite....

Stopped by Celebration Park Friday evening to kickoff the Labor Day Weekend.  Made up another batch of Doughbait and was itching to try it out.  Did not have much time to fish but did catch several with the largest going about 15" in size!

Quick Trip To Brockdale Park And Then To Celebration Park!

Brockdale Park
Stopped by Brockdale Park at Lake Lavon to checkout the action on the Point.  Water level was low with minimal activity observed.

Moved on to the East Pond at Celebration Park to continue testing the Homemade Doughbait.

This batch had stayed on the hook much better allowing for longer casts.

Managed several 16" Catfish, else it was small Bullheads. (Sampling of today's catch posted below).

Caught a Bruiser Catfish at Celebration Park This Morning!

Stopped by Celebration Park this morning to get a round of fishing in.  Caught several Catfish using Bread for bait.  Action was slow but steady with consistent strikes till about 8AM.  Highlight of the morning was a Bruiser Catfish that went just over 22" in size and 5.5 pounds in weight! Submitted a picture to the COAF Fishing Leader Board; definitely met the 15" minimum to post!

Frustration At Celebration Park's East Pond

Stopped by Celebration Park's East Pond to try out the Bread Fly - a pattern offered by Pondbass' Fly Shop Webstore

Caught a small Sunfish, then a 12" Catfish using the fishing fly.  Had more bites, then lost the fly to a Bruiser Catfish.  Was a nice run while it lasted, will have to purchase another one.

Did switch to Bread for bait and caught three more Catfish.  Also, lost several Bruisers; just could not set the hook or keep them on long enough to land them.

Fun day, regardless of the frustration of losing a fishing fly and missing out on some Bruisers!

Oak Point in Plano, then Celebration Park in Allen

Decided to check out Oak Point in Plano to test a Purple Wooley Bugger.  Nice lake but tough access due to the brush lining the shoreline.  Had a few Bluegill chase the fishing fly and nip its tail, and caught a little Bass.  Hoping the Purple Wooley Bugger entices a Bruiser for this June's One Fishing Fly Challenge!

Afterwards, made a brief stop at Celebration Park's North Pond to see how the Bluegill and Sunfish were doing.  Caught a few on Midges, all were little but did see a few larger Bluegill chase the Purple Wooley Bugger.

FYI: "Community Lakes Route"

Received a series of pictures from one Field Team Member that shows ponds that he passed while on his running route this morning.  He calls it the Community Lakes Route.  Of interest are the number of ponds along the route. Counted at least 12 ponds, some are sub-division ponds that limit access, others are familiar ponds like Bethany Lakes, and a few are not as well known like Shadow Lakes and several "no name" ponds.

Was wondering why Celebration Park or Auburn Springs were not shown.  He mentioned that the route did not take him there, and it would have made his 8 mile run a 10 or 12 mile run. Don't believe he was ready to go that distance for a few more pictures.

Anyhow, the pictures were sent via email to our partner Facebook Page - "COAF Field Team's" Fishing Log.  Should be posted on the site by now; check it out when you get a chance!

Good luck and good fishing!

Weather In Flux....

Tough go with fishing these last few days.  Field Team has been out and about hitting several community lakes.  All reports since Friday afternoon have been the same - little or no action.  Wind had been a factor Friday afternoon, Saturday brought rain and later snow.  Sunday morning, as of this posting, is showing more snow!  Not a bad start for Spring in North Texas, if you like snow.

A few observations from the Field Team for reference:
  • Bethany Lakes - a few strikes Friday afternoon using Plastic Worms and Lizards.  Should have had a hookset or two but the strong wind made it tough to feel the pickup consistenty.
  • Celebration Park - the small Sunfish and Bluegill that hang around the North Pond's concrete walls were nowhere to be seen.  The Bullhead and Catfish action in the East Pond seemed to have shutdown with one nibble in one hour.
  • Suncreek Park - a small pond with a population of small Sunfish and Bluegill.  Similar observation as Celebration Park's North Pond, fish were nowhere to be seen.
  • Waterloo (Denison) - a few Trout to be taken still but limits may be hard to come by given the pond was fished hard over the Spring Break Week.
Overall, looks like the latest Cold Front has put a slight delay in the action in the area.  Did hear about other fishermen having success on other area community lakes and ponds.  Mainly using Jig and Worm, Plastic Worm, and Plastic Lizard rigs for Bass.

For now, most of the Team is staying indoors but we do have a few "diehards" staying busy with the White Bass (Sandies) action at Rowlett Creek and another braving the conditions at LLELA for Hybrid.

Good Luck and Good Fishing!
The Field Team

Three Bullheads On Bread

Quick trip to Celebration Park this afternoon. Caught 3 Bullheads using Bread for bait. No Bruisers but still fun to get out before the cold front arrives tonight!

Still on standby for the flytying material from the FlyShack; Field Team continues to take its coffee break during the weather delay.  Plans are to update the Team's Squidoo Lens "Black Coffee Review" article as we take our break!

Only One Bullhead, But Trout Stocking Next Week!

Fished Celebration Park's East Pond to test the waters. Used the same gear for Trout fishing and managed one Bullhead. Local pond, Bethany Lakes, gets its Trout stocking next Friday; hope to mix it up with them soon!
