Three Keepers at Ticky Creek This Time!

Made it back to Ticky Creek and took the kayaks and fished the Point.  Caught White Bass with three Keepers this time!  Also, saw a lot of insects floating on the surface.  Noticed little Catfish feeding on them.  Cool stuff!

Surfcasting without the Surf at Ticky Creek!

Decided to checkout Lake Lavon at Ticky Creek.  Brought surfcasting gear and used an old Newell Reel that had been gathering dust for a while.  Got some good casting practice in, backlashes and all.  Even managed to get a couple of White Bass to strike!  Fun stuff!

Fished a Different Point This Round....

Fished the area south of Lavonia Park to try for White Bass.  Very promising area per reports from TFF's TarponFly.  Brought the Carp Rod that we like to use for long distance surfcasting.  Also, brought Slabs and Crappie Jigs as suggested.

After walking from the parking area to the point near the Dam, noticed a lot of fish activity on the surface (note: the walk was muddy from yesterday's rain; we found it easier to wade the shoreline at times).

Casted for distance and had a few short strikes before finally hooking into one... a Largemouth Bass.  Kept at it some more and hooked a Yellow Bass. Then, a few boats passed through the area, so the bite was off for a few.  Then, started getting strikes again after things settled down.

More missed strikes but did get a Keeper White Bass that struck the Slab! Fun stuff... will need to come back and bring the Kayak next round.  Perfect area for some trolling!

2012-2013 Season Approaches... Lavon Permits Available!

This year's hunting season is fast approaching here in the Lonestar State!  To start things off, Lake Lavon Hunting Permits are available for the 2012-2013 Season.  Water level is higher than last year at this time; hope to visit some hunting spots this upcoming Early Teal Season.

Checked the Trot Line.

Checked the Trot Line this morning.  Had baited up with Shrimp and Hot Dogs this time.  Caught four Catfish we kept for dinner.  Also, caught and released three undersized Catfish and a White Bass.  And, did lose another Catfish while bring it in.  Fun stuff!

Today's Catch....

Checked the Trot Line this morning.  Caught five Catfish, released one that was undersized and kept four for Dinner.  Largest went 19" in size.  Fun stuff... much calmer winds compared to yesterday!

Set Another Trot Line!

Set a Trot Line today.  Used Shad, Shrimp, and Hot Dogs for bait.  We are letting the Trot Line soak now; hope to catch a Bruiser or two this round.  Made some adjustments since last time.  Added two more floats and weights to keep the main line off the bottom and set at the right depth.

Also, used a "Hand Line" holder to store the main line and a "Noodle" to keep the hook and leaders organized.  Despite the strong wind today was able to set the Trot Line with minimal issues and did not have to untangle any hooks and leaders this time.

Now... if the fish would cooperate and get caught, things will be even better!

Checked the Trot Line....

Checked the trot line we set.  Caught four Catfish.  Two were small and were released; two were decent sized and were filleted!  Measured 19" in size.  Baited with Shrimp and Hot Dogs; looked like the fish preferred the Shrimp.  Also, noticed some new additions to the fence where some "Bruisers" were posted. Looks like someone has been getting some big ones!

One Little Catfish on a Jug Line....

Took the jug lines to Ticky Creek this evening.  Went with Chicken Liver for bait and free-floating jug lines; no anchors this time.

Slow go though. Caught one little Catfish on a jug line and two small White Bass trolling a Roadrunner on a handline.  Decided to get some exercise and do some trolling while waiting for the fish to bite.

Lotta fun, even better to see another fisherman's stringer of three Bruiser Catfish using jug lines (largest one can be seen in the video clip)!  Good to see they do work.

Only One This Round...

Set out a Trot Line this afternoon.  Checked it after soaking for 2 hours.  Caught only one Catfish.  Let it go as it was small.  Re-baited the hooks, and then set out another Trot Line.  Hoping for a Bruiser when we check them again!

Jug Lining at Brockdale Park

Went to Brockdale Park this evening and set out Jug Lines.  Let them soak for about 2 hours; had a few light hits but no hookups.  Used Chicken Liver that tended not to stay on the hook.  Although a bust, was still fun taking the kayak out and "fishing".... Sure beats working!

Jug Lining a Bust....

Went jug lining at the local lake.  Used the Kayak instead of the Jon Boat.  Things started out well but the wind kicked up and a rain storm hit, so had to call it quits early.  Better luck next round!

Only Two This Round....

Went back to the Point at Ticky Creek (Lake Lavon).  Windy conditions but still fun casting for distance.  Managed only two this round - undersized White Bass.  No Keepers today!  Continued to use the Sinker and Jig Rig and a Carp Rod.   Really liking the distance we get using this setup.

Only One White Bass This Time

Ran up the road to a Ticky Creek Park on Lake Lavon.  Short on time but not enthusiasm, brought a Carp Rod and used it to "surf cast" from the lake's shore.  When the White Bass are active, can really have fun catching them on a Float and Jig Rig.  In today's case, only caught one White Bass.  So, it's a short video this time!

Highland Park at Lake Lavon This Evening

Stopped by Highland Park at Lake Lavon this evening to throw the cast net and catch some Shad.  No luck on the Shad but did see others catching them.  While at the boat ramp, noticed two fishermen in a Bass boat waiting at the ramp.  As it turned out, they had hit a floating log and lost their outboard motor.... that is, it was still attached to the boat but just barely.  They had hit the log and damaged their boat, one fisherman was thrown into the water.  Good thing they had their life jackets on as it happened so quickly!

Another Go at Kayak Fishing Brockdale Park

Made a run to Brockdale Park to Kayak Fish for White Bass.  Met up with TFF's Mikes14 and worked the Point trolling Crappie Jigs and Roadrunners.  Lots of baitfish in the area, and a few fish lurking over the brushline, but overall the action was slow.  Regardless, had fun catching and releasing a few White Bass as well as putting a nice sized Crappie on the stringer!

More White Bass at Brockdale Park

Returned to Brockdale Park for more kayak fishing for White Bass.  Mostly undersized fish but did catch one Keeper.  Caught them on a White Marabou Roadrunner.  Slow but steady action with a lot of wind.  Did see a few boils of fish feeding on shad as it got later in the day.

Kayak Fishing the Point at Brockdale Park

Short video clip of a quick trip to Brockdale Park.  Was going for White Bass; managed two undersized ones.  Caught them on a Chartreuse Crappie Jig trolled on a flatline.  Bite was sloowwww.  Will be back again.  Hope the White Bass will be too!

Kayak Fishing Ticky Creek

Wind let up today.  Decided to fish Lake Lavon with the Kayak.  Put in at Ticky Creek Park and made for the point.  Then, found out that we left the rod and reel at home.  Made do with a handline and a Roadrunner Jig.  Good thing the tackle box stays with the kayak!  Caught several White Bass with one Keeper.  Remainder did not meet the legal length requirement so were let go.

Kayak Fishing at Lake Lavon Was Tough Today.

Went kayak fishing at Lake Lavon but it was tough to find a place to launch.  Since Brockdale and Highland Park have been closed for awhile, we have been going to Ticky Creek.  Today, found out it was closed.  Ended up launching from Avalon Park.  Lake level is low but did manage to hook a little Bass that was lost while trying to bring it into the kayak.  Other than that, had a few more strikes trolling a jig but no hook ups.  Really hoping rains come soon.
