Olive Crawdad Gets a Sunfish, Purple Grasshopper Gets a Bass

Morning trip to Bethany.  Colder temps and cloudy.  No worries, was able to get a Sunfish on an Olive Crawdad.  Then, switched to a Purple Grasshopper and caught Bass.  No Bruisers, still fun, just need to adjust the pattern with the weather change.

Purple Grasshopper Variant This Time,... Less Missed Strikes

Another go at Bethany this evening.  This time grabbed the Three Weight Flyrod and went with the fly that was already on the line - a Purple Foam Grasshopper Variant.  Some rain and overcast skies.  Action was steady with less missed strikes this time.  Caught 7 Bass and 7 Bluegill/Sunfish.  Water level is up from the recent rains; caught most less than 10' from the bank!

Quick Trip To Bethany This AM, Foam Diver Frustration, Though!

Made a quick trip to Bethany this morning.  Went with the Foam Diver again as it was sitting in the office already rigged.  Brought no other gear.  Had a strike at the Horseshoe Pond and missed.  Moved on to the Main Pond and worked the banks.  Had two more missed strikes working the side near the Pavilion.  Continued working towards the other side, missing four more strikes.  Then, finally hooked a little Bass.  Was a quick trip this morning with lots of frustration due to missed strikes,... but it still beats working!

Foam Diver Gets a Few at Bethany This Afternoon

Been hit or miss these past few days being able to breakaway and fish.  Saw an opening this afternoon though, grabbed the flyrod, and headed to Bethany.  Went with whatever fishing fly was already on the line.  In this case, it was a Foam Diver.  Had several missed strikes but finally managed to hook several - four Bass and a Sunfish!  Good stuff!

Quick Trip to Brockdale Park

No fishing yesterday and a late start this evening. Made it a quick trip to Brockdale Park at Lake Lavon. Brought the Daiwa MadDragon Carp Rod and used a Float and Jig Rig in hopes of catching a few White Bass on the Point.  It was a bust.  Cold temps, wind,... whatever the excuse, did not get a strike.  Saw minimal fish activity and no Shad at the boat ramp.  Still good to do some long distance casting and liked that the water level is up compared to last year!

Wooley Rooster Martin Gets Two Fish This Round

Was not able to fish Friday and Saturday.... Worse,... hated to miss the Fishing Derby at Bethany Lakes on Saturday.  Was on the road, so could not fish.  Did make it back this evening and was able to wet a line finally.  Went with the Wooley Rooster Martin and caught two fish - a Bluegill and a little Bass.  Did miss several other Bass though, so the fish were biting, just the reflexes were not up to speed this outing.  Still good to fish rather than drive!

Bluegill and Catfish on Bread

Was hoping for more  Bruisers using a Bread Fly and Cheez-IT Tandem Rig.  Unfortunately, did not happen.  Switched to fishing a baited hook with Bread and caught Bluegill and Catfish.  Little ones but still a fun time.... sure beats working!

Slow Day, Caught Several Fish Luckily

Went to Bethany to try the Deer Hair Bread Fly we made yesterday.  Had several strikes but no hookups.  Switched to a Nymph played around with the Sunfish.  Then, switched to a Purple Foam Grasshopper and caught Bluegill.  And then, switched to a Foam Diver and caught  a little Bass and lost a few more.

Deer Hair Bread Fly....

No fishing tonight.  Work and other commitments took precedence over fishing.  We hope this does not become a trend.  Did make time to tie another variation of a Bread Fly.  This one is made with Deer Hair spun on a Size 2 Baitholder Hook.  Hope to try it out soon!

Bread Fly Gets a Bruiser....

Decided to try another variation of a Bread Fly we made several years ago.  Last time we used the inner core of polypropylene rope.  This time, we used a dubbing loop to wrap White Marabou and Mallard Cul De Canard feathers on to a Size 2 Baitholder Hook.

Went to Bethany Lakes and chummed with Saltine Crackers, then cast the Bread Fly to the area.  Had several takes but no hook ups, then finally got a solid hookup on a Bruiser Catfish that went 22" in size.  Not bad, seemed fatter than most, too!

Unfortunately, Turtles and Ducks made it tough to keep the are chummed.  Switched to fishing with Bread for bait because it would sink before they could get to it.  Caught Bluegill and little Catfish; no more Bruisers!
