Cold Morning

Out and about this morning. Colder than yesterday with temps reported in the upper 20's.  Ran by Shadow Lakes Trail; water was clear but no fish were noted.  Continued to Bethany Lakes; no surface activity observed, looks as if the Upper Pond (Pond C) is done this season for Trout.  Passing Bethany Creek Pond, water was clear with small Sunfish hovering near the drainage canal/feeder creek.  Easy route for running with flat ground and minimal street crossings/intersections.

Out to Lunch

Drove by Bethany Ridge Park on the corner of Bethany and Allen Heights in Allen at lunch today.  Noticed ongoing construction near the picnic area and fishing pier.  Looks like an island/peninsula is being built up.  Cross our fingers the construction is completed before Spring to allow time for the area to recover.  Say goodbye to the drop-off point near the pier.

Out and About This AM.

Was out and about this morning and ran by Celebration Park's East and North Ponds.  Water levels are lower but did observe some surface activity in the East Pond; suspect Bluegill/Sunfish.  Continued running on a route that passed Reed Elementary and continued on the jogging/walking trail that runs along the small creek to the South of the school.  Creek is a shallow water creek that holds small fish but have seen an occasional Bass - fingerling-sized.  All for now.

Trout Fishing at Waterloo Park.

Out and about this morning with a fishing trip to Waterloo Park in Denison. Things started out slow but picked up later. Able to limit out with five Trout.

January 11, 2009 - Limited Out at Waterloo

Headed out early this morning when temperatures were well below freezing. Arrived at Waterloo around 8AM and began fishing the small pond. See Picture for reference. Mapboard at Waterloo: Had several nibbles on Orange Powerbait, and then caught a Trout. Bite was slow but steady; just could not hook them solidly. Shortly after 9AM, nothing hit for 2+ hours. Was about to call it a day when the Trout started biting again around 11AM. Still was hit or miss on Orange Powerbait. Switched over to Corn and finally landed one around 11:30AM. Limited out with a total of five just short of Noon. A check of stomach contents showed the following: 2 with Corn, 1 with Corn/Pink Powerbait, 1 with Corn/Chartruese Powerbait, and 1 empty. Todays Catch:

Celebration Park - January 8, 2009

Warm day today; able to make a quick trip to Celebration Park's North Pond for Bluegill/Sunfish. Saw enough action to stay ready for light striking Trout. Cross our fingers we will be able to test our reflexes on Trout at other locations in the area in the near future. Small but Scrappy. No Trout. Just Sunfish

Cold and windy at Bethany Lakes this evening. Flyfished a Bead Head Nymph with no luck on Trout. Managed to hook and land Sunfish on a steady but slow retrieve. Fish were about 6" in size. No Trout. Just Sunfish.

Summary of Lures/Bait Used for Trout (1/3/09)

An updated summary of lures/baits used for Trout is posted below. The items in blue font and underlined indicate updates from the last report. The results are based on recent postings and observations in the Field. The ">" indicates a post or an observation of the lure/bait being used. Results indicate a slowdown at Bethany Lakes since its stocking on 12 December. Bob Jones remains promising with reports of larger sized Trout being stocked recently. Greenbriar continues to receive periodic stockings but action quickly tapers off; best to fish the location the day of stocking or soon after a stocking. Overall, bait seems to be producing over lures. However, reports from the Guadalupe indicate fishing flies - Wooly Buggers and Prince Nymphs/Nymphs, Silver Super Dupers, and White Rooster Tails are getting strikes. Good luck and good fishing! No Trout Today.

Fished Bethany Creek Park Pond, located up the street from Bethany Lakes, to scout the waters given the warm temps today. Caught a small Bass and three Sunfish. Went back to Bethany Lakes for Trout; no Trout today not even a nibble. Decided to work the feeder creek and caught Bluegill and Sunfish. Slow day for Trout but still enough action on other fish to keep interested. FYI: Cold weather is arriving tomorrow, quick check online showed Waterloo Park in Denision is scheduled for a Trout stocking on 4 January. No Trout Today. Two Trout to Ring In The New Year.

Back to Bethany Lakes for Trout this evening. Had several missed strikes and light nibbles before dark, landed two Trout on Orange Powerbait, and then no action once dark settled in. Fished on the bottom using a Carolina-Rig. Checked stomach contents, both were empty save for one kernel of corn in one Trout. Action has slowed but at least the Cormorant have not shown in force as of yet. Two Trout To Ring In The New Year. Click-on DFW Fishing News for more fishing information in the Metroplex area. Zero Trout This Outing.

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Tried Bread and Powerbait without success. Ended with zero Trout this outing. Others noted taking Trout from the pier earlier in the day; however, evening did not produce. Hoping for better luck next trip. Trout and a Bluegill!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Caught one Trout and lost another using Bread for bait. Also, caught and released a large Bluegill that went just over 9" in size. Pretty nice fight on light tackle.

Fish were actively feeding on the surface ealry in the evening but was unable to get them to strike on the fly.

Switched to spinning gear and tried Gold and Copper Super Dupers without success. Then, tried Black, White, and Yellow Rooster Tails without luck.

Went to Powerbait and Bread. No strikes on Powerbait but did get them on Bread. FYI: Heard from others that Velveeta worked earlier in the day.

None On A Super Duper.

Quick trip this morning to Bethany Lakes. Clear and cold with below freezing temperatures. Fished a Super Duper with no success. Moreover, did not observe others, who were using lures or bait, catching any Trout either. May need to try bait next time and hope for a bite or two. Else, shift to another location such as LLELA. Misty and Cold, Only One Trout This Evening.

Made a last minute quick trip this evening to Bethany Lakes. Misty and cold, made worse by the slow fishing activity. Was able to land one Trout using Bread for Bait; stomach contents was nearly empty with only two kernels of Corn. Misty and Cold, Only One Trout This Evening. Summary of Lures/Baits Used for Trout.

Unable to fish today and, with the upcoming holidays, may find little time for fishing. Decided to make another summary of lures/baits used for Trout. This summary is expanded to include other locations in the area. The results are based on recent postings and observations in the Field. The ">' indicates a post or an observation of the lure/bait being used. Results suggest using the Gold Super Dupers and Bread at Bethany Lakes, no clear standout for the other locations but recent activity suggests Nightcrawlers for Bob Jones and Yellow Rooster Tails for Fort Richardson.

Good luck and good fishing.

Interesting Find Today.

Fished Bethany Lakes this afternoon. Still cold but wind was light compared to yesterday. Caught a limit of Trout using a flyrod to freeline the bait. Also, used spinning gear to freeline the bait since the wind was light. Both worked well today. Still need to maintain minimal drag on the strike and allow time for the fish to take the bait. Else, plan for a lot of missed hooksets. Interesting find today! Checked the stomach contents - Yellow Powerbait Corn Nuggets including one with a hook embedded, the usual Bread as expected, and a Rock. Not sure why the Rock triggered a strike; may have looked like a piece of bait. Today's Catch. Click-on DFW Fishing News for more fishing information in the Metroplex area. Cold Morning But Another Limit.

Cold morning at Bethany Lakes but was able to catch another limit of Trout . Temperature was 23 degrees with a windchill of 9 degrees. Luckily, the fish were biting making the cold bearable. Used Bread for bait but did not use a bobber due to windy conditions. Tried free-lining but the wind also made it tough. Ended up using my flyrod like a cane pole and molding Bread around the fishing fly. Was able to control the line and not spook the fish on the strike. Key this morning was no drag on the strike, else the fish were letting go. FYI: Stomach contents - Three with Bread and Corn. One with Bread and a Powerbait Corn Nugget. One was empty. Limit of 5 Trout.

Early start this morning made for a limit of five Trout at Bethany Lakes. Fish were caught in less than an hour with consistent hits throughout. Used Bread for bait and also managed to take a Trout flyfishing a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. But, the fish may have struck the fishing fly because it looked like a piece of Bread. Decided not to count it as a fly-caught Trout till I get consistent strikes. FYI: Fished the Bread using a bobber and setting the depth at 3'-4'. Also, examined the stomach contents. Noted Bread, Corn, and mix of Corn/Bread. No midges found like last year. Plan to keep using bait.

Two On A Super Duper.

Hit Bethany Lakes just before 8AM this morning. Trout were active on the surface in the Northern section. Caught two Trout on a Super Duper. Attempted to cast fishing flies but was unable to cast where they were "boiling". Left with several more missed hook-ups using the Super Duper. Did observe others taking them on bait.
