Tenkara Rod Still Good For Working the Shoreline!

Went with the Tenkara Rod this morning to work the shoreline at Bethany Lakes.  Been having trouble spooking the fish when using Flyfishing Gear.  Caught one Bruiser Bluegill and missed a decent Bass, else it was mainly little fish... which works well on a Tenkara Rod!

Struck Out This Afternoon... Brockdale Park.

Trolled the point at Brockdale Park (Lake Lavon). Tough time this round with zero fish caught. Regardless, was a good workout rowing on a calm but hot day!  Water level was low and no baitfish (Shad) sighted.

Morning At The Village....

Fished at the Village this morning.  Slow action but did get three Bass.  No Bruisers... did get a lot of missed strikes though.  Caught them all on an Olive/Red Deer Hair Bug.  Tied it with a Size 4 Hook.  May need to go to a Size 6 like the Red and White Popper that we picked up at Cabelas.

Struck Out Last Night...!

Struck out last night at Auburn Springs and Kroger Park. Hope to turn this trend around over the 3-Day Weekend... hopefully! Tied a Deer Hair Bug to replace the Red and White Surface Popper lost while fishing Stoney Hollow the other day. Tied using a similar sized hook as the Red and White Surface Popper. Should be able to handle a Bruiser or two!

Update:  Fished Stoney Hollow Park and caught two Bass on the Surface Popper.  Had a number of missed strikes.  And, had a water snake check out one of the Bass.  Had pictures of the Bass and the water snake... but erased them by accident.

Stoney Hollow Park... Bass Go For the Surface Popper, Too!

Stopped by Stoney Hollow Park in Plano to fish the pond.  Had not been there in a while but was pleasantly surprised that the Bass were liking the Surface Popper, too!  Only bad thing... lost the Red and White Deer Hair Bug after a Bass wrapped the line around a snag.  Good to have the back up Green and White Deer Hair Bug.

Deer Hair Popper Works Out Well at Kroger Park!

Went to Kroger Park this evening and fished with the Deer Hair Popper.  Surface action was good with Bass readily taking the fly!  Caught four but missed more... slow reflexes, bad eyes, aging,... any excuse for missing a strike.  Lotta fun regardless!

Critter Caught On Tape At Bethany...

Received a short video clip from one of our Readers of a Beaver swimming in the Upper Pond!  Cool stuff knowing their are critters in the suburbs...  Thanks for the video submission JB!

Six Bass This Evening On a Deer Hair Bug Surface (Popper)!

Went to the Village and fished the pond behind In-And-Out Burger.  Another opportunity to try the Red and White Deer Hair Bug (Surface Popper).  Caught six Bass; no Bruisers this round.  But, was fun again to catch them on the fly!

Caught One Skinny Bass on a Surface Popper Last Night.

Late post... caught one skinny Bass that struck a Surface Popper we picked up at Cabelas yesterday.  Went with Red and White Deer Hair in Size 6.  Took it on a slow retrieve with a lot of starts and stops.  Had several other strikes but were likely little Bass and Bluegill nipping at the Popper.  Fun to catch them on the surface, fun to catch them on flyfishing gear, ready for more fun when a Bruiser takes the Popper!

Surface Poppers on the Fly....

Went to Cabelas to pick up some Deer Hair Surface Poppers.  Since the Hula Popper and Jitterbug topwater lures worked well, decided to try the Surface Poppers made for Fly Fishing.  Will see how they work out first chance we get...!

Flies Did Well At the Village This Morning....

Fished the Village in Allen this morning; went with the flyrod and fishing flies.  Tough go again with the wind but managed to get a few casts in.  Caught seven Bass and one Bluegill.  Lost a Bruiser Bass though; fought it for about a minute before it shook the fly off!  Oh well, better luck next time.

PS:  Used a BH Olive Wooley Bugger, a Deer Hair Bug, and a Damsel Fly.  Deer Hair Bug seemed to be the fly of choice this round.

Morning Outing Was Tough With Windy Conditions...

Wind made it rough to fish Bethany this morning.  Did catch a little Bluegill on a Wooley Bugger using the Tenkara Rod.  Switched to Ultralight Gear and Rooster Tails.  Caught three little Bass and lost two others while reeling them in.  No plans to fish this evening though... headed to Celebration Park to watch the Fireworks!

Jitterbug Gets a Bass; Hula Popper Gets a Catfish...

Went fishing with topwater lures at Bethany this evening.  Caught a Bass using the Jitterbug, and then switched to a Hula Popper.  Had some aggressive strikes but no solid hookups save for one Bruiser Catfish!  Nice fight... estimate about 18"+ in size!

Flyfishing This Round

Went flyfishing this round at Bethany.  Caught three Sunfish/Bluegill on a Foam Rubber Grasshopper.  Did miss a few Bass with none landed.  Still was good to stretch the flyline!

Made a Topwater Lure... Caught Two Bass!

Decided to make a homemade topwater lure.  Whittled out a lure out of cedar last night, put a quick coat of paint on it, and soon as it dried... went fishing!  Caught a nice Bass at Kroger Park, and then went across the street and caught one more Bass.  Glad to see the homemade topwater lure worked!

PS: Like the cedar wood because of the added weight; only one backlash on the baitcasting gear this round.

Hula Popper Works At The Village, Too

Change of pace this evening.  Opted to try fishing the Hula Popper somewhere else other than Bethany Lakes.  Went for the Pond at the Village in Allen.  Water level was low but managed to catch a few Bass.  Largest went about 15" in size... fun stuff!

Fished a Hula Popper this evening at Bethany Lakes.  Managed to catch two Bass despite the windy conditions!  Was hoping for a Bruiser but two scrappy Bass will do!

Foam Grasshopper, Rooster Tail, and then the Roadrunner Gets Hits!

Windy morning made for a tough go flyfishing; did manage a Shellcracker on a Foam Grasshopper!!  Switched to Ultralight Gear and a Rooster Tail and caught little Bass and a Sunfish.  Tied on a Roadrunner and caught more Bass!  Fun stuff...!

Happy Father's Day - Advice?

Here is a Father's Day email that COAF Field Team Member - Zeke Rutlegde received from a buddy. Posting the email message for other Dads... thought it was funny! May have to use some of the advice given...

Hi All,
Wishing all the Dads a Happy Father's Day! Cannot go without a day relearning the "Fatherly" things that Dad taught me. Really glad to have been prepared for the good and bad moments that come with a family, fatherhood, and yes... even getting older (I mean "aging" in the sense of fine wine getting better over time and not like my receding hairline or the progressive eyeglasses that I wear now).

Possessing this knowledge and experience as a Dad, I would like to share my plans to pass on this information to my Son. Please feel free to try this on your kids.

Although we know a lot, let us not give away everything. Therefore, I intend to withhold bits of fatherly advice because our Sons must learn some things on their own. Specifically,

- You should say "No" to a child's request at random. There should be no reason as to your decision. This is to keep the child guessing how you think and your thought process. Remember if they think you are crazy, then they will stay on edge... which is the point.

- If your teenage daughter asks if her "***** look bigger", you respond incoherently. Do not,... I repeat answer in the definitive. She must never know that she is attractive to boys.

- You can repeat over, and over, and over, and over.... again and again and again to pick up your "______" (fill in the blank with shoes, keys, phones, homework, etc...) the child will never remember that you told them this. Instead, the child's behavior will only change when forgetting causes them to lose out on something that personally affects them - lost cash, low grade, missed appointment/class,....

- Children become deaf and mute when you begin a sentence with "When I was your age...."

- "California Stops" are illegal but I do them anyways when you are not in the car with me.

- Finally, I cherish each memory of when they were "cute and cuddly" and relive them during acts of stupidity that they display to keep me sane. Note: Stupidity is defined as something I never would admit I did when I was their age, too. (Also, I may have to share this one with my Son. Still debating over this).

Happy Father's Day to the Dads; have a beer, wine, shot or even better... have several! And, most important.... Thank you Dad for all you taught meas well as did not tell me intentionally. It worked!

Happy Fathers Day!
