Lake Lavon Hunting Permits Available

Not sure how the upcoming Season is going to pan out.  Low water levels and limited access to are favored hunting areas has us waiting for (hopefully) more rain and boat ramps reopening.  Just in case, decided to renew our Hunting Permits.

For those who were issued Permits in the past, easy to update it on line.  For new Hunters, you will need to check with the Area Office.  See Link for more info

Till then, we are holding off on Duck Hunting but keeping a close watch on the weather!

Waterlogged Baitcasting Rod/Reel Combo Comes Through at Kroger.

Recovered a waterlogged baitcasting rod/reel combo while fishing the other day.  After a little elbow grease and "reverse engineering" was able to get the reel back to working condition!  Took it out to Kroger Park this evening and fished a Carolina-Rigged Half-Quatro (hand poured Senko Worm variant).  Caught a Bass and had several other light strikes... not bad given the spool was frozen solid when we found it.

Bass and Panfish at Bethany Lakes This Morning!

Caught four Bass and several Panfish using a Purple Damselfly, Bead Olive Wooley Bugger, an Olive Crawdad, and an unweighted Olive Wooley Bugger  Caught several Panfish as well using the unweighted Wooley Bugger.  Fun stuff... good to see Bethany Lakes is holding up from the drought.

"River Why" Tip Comes Through!

Went back to Kroger Park this afternoon for a go at the Catfish.  Brought Ultralight Gear and Bread for bait.  Unfortunately, struck out miserably.  Not a bite at all.

Did see Bluegill and Bass working the shallows. A quick check of the gear on hand... an Ultralight Spinning Rod/Reel, Bread, Hooks, and an Olive Wooley Bugger found on the floorboard of the truck.

Taking a tip from the movie "River Why", wrapped the Olive Wooley Bugger with Bread (mud was used in the movie) and casted the fly using the Ultralight Gear.  Shortly after casting the Wooley Bugger, the Bread broke apart and was able to fish the fly!

Caught one Bass and a Bluegill, hooked but lost two other Bass.  Not a bad outing saved by a piece of Bread!

Two Bass and a Sunfish at Kroger Park This Evening.

Fished Kroger Park this evening.  Caught two Bass on an Olive Crawdad and then a Sunfish on a Yellow Grasshopper Variant.  Did see some Bruiser Catfish feeding on leftover bread that someone had left after feeding the ducks.  Had several hookups on them but could not keep on the hook long enough to land them!

Cool Temps Make for a Comfortable Outing To Bethany!

Cool temps made for a great reason to go fishing.  Went with Flyfishing Gear again despite the strong winds.  Fished an Olive Crawdad and caught one Bass, several Sunfish, a decent Shellcracker, and a Turtle....

Flyfishing at the Village Producing Bass

Fished the Village this morning with Flyfishing Gear.  Tied on an Olive Crawdad Fly and caught a Bass on the first cast, then lost the Fly to a breakoff on another Bass.  Murphy's Law came in to play as the only Crawdad Fly we had was the one lost to the breakoff.  Tied on a Bead Head Olive Wooley Bugger and caught two Bass of which one was actively chasing baitfish in the shallows.  Fun stuff... especially with the cooler temps!

Been Away But Made It To Kroger Park This Evening!

Was able to break away from the "Salt Mines" this evening. Opted for a quick trip to Kroger Park and Flyfishing Gear.  Caught mainly Bluegill and one Bass but did see a few Bruisers working the shallows.... too bad they were not interested in a Deer Hair Bug, Wooley Bugger, Damselfly, Clouser Minnow,....

Kroger Park - Bluegill and a Bass.

Stopped by Kroger Park this morning to flex a flyrod and to see if the lower water levels and hot temps have affected the action.  Water is low but luckily the fountain has been running and has kept things relatively cool.  Managed a few Bluegill and one little Bass.  Did see fish working the shallows in the shaded areas... none wanted a fishing fly though. Bluegill struck Dry Flies; Bass went for the Purple Damsel Fly!

Only One Bass at the Village on the Half-Quatro this AM...

Slow action this morning at the Village.  Only one Bass caught using the Half-Quatro.  Had several other missed hooksets but overall fishing was slowwwww....  Need some rain and a break in the hot temps.  Looking forward to the Fall; hope it arrives soon!

Emotion Spitfire Kayak Makes Good With Kayak Fishing At Lake Lavon....

Been a bear lately with our day jobs, especially with the new kayak sitting in the garage instead of on the water!  Finally found a break in the schedule and took it out to Lake Lavon.  Had not been to the Lake lately... soon found that the ramps at Brockdale, Highland Park, and Bratonia were closed.  Luckily, Ticky Creek remains open and was able to launch the kayak.

Was easy to launch the little 8' kayak.  Light to carry, stable on the water, and easy to paddle.  Was not a problem trolling a Yellow Crappie Jig on a flatline.  Ended up catching three little White Bass.  Not bad for the Spitfire's first fishing trip!

Half-Quatro Still Working At The Village!

Back at the Village this morning fishing with the hand poured Half-Quatro Worm.  Good to see the water level is up since last time we were here.  Also, good to see the Bass are still liking the Half-Quatro!  Caught and released four Bass.

Using the Simple Ghost Shrimp Bait Pump

Had a great time fishing the Texas Gulf Coast.  Really liked the ability to catch fresh bait from the surf - Ghost Shrimp.  The Bait Pump worked out well and allowed us to catch larger fish!  Below is a video clip of us using the Bait Pump; also posted it in our HubPages article - "Making a Simple Ghost Shrimp Bait Pump".  Check it out when you get a chance.

Island Tackle (Port Aransas)

While on the Texas Gulf Coast last year, stopped by the Island Tackle Store and bought circle hooks.  Really liked them but never wrote down the brand name.  Went back this year, bought more circle hooks, and this time took a picture of the brand name so as not to forget.  The brand name is Fishtamer Hooks.  Great value with the same quality as more expensive brands!

The 3/0 size works well for using Bread for bait when Catfish fishing but is a little on the small size for those Bruisers lurking in the community lakes and ponds.  This time went with the 6/0 size... It worked well for hooking up on the little Shark we caught from the surf earlier this week.  Suspect it will work well on a few Bruiser Catfish, too!

Mainly Whiting and Rays...

Set up on the beach for more surf fishing.  Mainly caught Whiting and Sting Rays.  No Sharks or other Bruisers this round.  Still a good day fishing rather than working!  Also, posted other pictures from the Jetty Boat Trip showing a mix bag of fish.

Sharks for Lunch!

Took a Jetty Boat today with other Field Team Members... caught mainly Shark.  On our return had them cleaned and filleted, and then a local eatery cooked them for a tasty lunch.  Even better; had enough fillets for Dinner, too!

More Fun On The Coast...

More fun on the Coast... today we setup on the Beach with Surfcasting Gear in hopes of a Bruiser or two!  It was a long day but did not have an issue as the bite was steady... mainly caught Whiting save for a little Blacktip Shark!

Change of Pace...

Change of pace.... Having fun catching a few Saltwater Fish.  No Bruisers, still fun,... more important, there is the uncertainty that something big may bite!

Also, getting a chance to test out the Ghost Shrimp Bait Pump we made from readily available parts at Home Depot!  Simple to make, easy to use, and makes for great live bait.  Too bad, only 20 per day per person is the regulation here for Ghost Shrimp.
