One Fly, One Hour, Nineteen Fish... Fun Stuff!

Only had an hour to fish this evening.  So, headed to Bethany Lakes to fish the Lower Pond by the Recreation Center.  Instead of fishing a Foam Rubber Spider Variant, we used a fishing fly pattern we found on the Internet.  It's the Bully's Bluegill Spider.

We tied it as detailed in their video with one variation we used Antron Dubbing instead of Chenille for the body. Looks like it worked well on the Bluegill given we caught nineteen fish in the hour we allotted ourselves this trip!  Follows is a short slideshow of today's catch!

PS:  Here is the video of the instructions for tying the Bully's Bluegill Spider!

Bethany Creek, Then Bethany Lakes

Short video clip of today's outing.  Fished Bethany Creek's pond and caught a Bass on a Foam Rubber Spider Variant.  Hit the fishing fly hard while it sat motionless on the surface.

Then, went down the road to Bethany Lakes to fish the Lower Pond by the Recreation Center.  Caught a few Bluegill just before dark.  Fish kept hitting well after sunset as well.

Fun Stuff!

PS:  Been asked what fishing fly we are using.  We call it a Foam Rubber Spider Variant.  Very easy fishing fly to tie.  Here is a video of instructions on how we tie them.

Bluegill and a Bass at Kroger Park

Late start today,.... Went to Kroger Park again after tying another Foam Spider Variant.  Caught several Bluegill, then lost the fishing fly to a snag.  Went with a Guadalupana and had zero strikes until a little Bass hit it as it got dark.  No Bruisers but still beats working!

Two Sunfish Tonight at Bethany

Went to Bethany to listen to the Summer Sounds Concert... last one this season!  While there, had to fish of course.  Looks like the Summer pattern is here - no bites till well after 7PM.  Two missed strikes on Bass, several missed strikes on Bluegill, and then finally hooked a couple of Sunfish.  Good stuff!

More Bluegill at Kroger Park

Returned to Kroger Park yesterday and brought a different fishing fly to fish the surface - Foam Rubber Spider Variant in Size12.  Worked a nesting area with the fly and managed to hookup with a few before breaking off to a snag.  Oh well,... will have tie another one and come back another time!

Moments in Time - A Fish Story

Here is a short story about one fisherman's (Fshng84's) recollection of catching his first two fish.  Tough to remember other fish caught but these two remain in memory!  Check it out when you get a chance... "Moments in Time - A Fish Story".

Slow Action at Denison Dam This Round

Ran up the road yesterday and fished the tailrace.  Had a number of strikes but missed setting the hook.  When we arrived the power plant was generating, saw some surface activity in the area, but only managed to catch three - two Striped Bass and a Catfish.  Released one Striper, and kept the Catfish and other Striper that was deep hooked for Dinner.  Oh well, better luck next round!

Kroger Park and Bluegills

Fished Kroger Park this evening.  Brought one fishing fly - a Guadalupana.  Caught a few Bluegill with a Bruiser or two mixed in the bunch! Then, checked out the fish fry that the Bass were feeding on.  Going to need to tie some Damsel Flies for the next round. Lots of fun.

Only Two This Round....

Went back to the Point at Ticky Creek (Lake Lavon).  Windy conditions but still fun casting for distance.  Managed only two this round - undersized White Bass.  No Keepers today!  Continued to use the Sinker and Jig Rig and a Carp Rod.   Really liking the distance we get using this setup.

Deer Hair Popper Gets a Bass

Was able to fish Bethany this evening.  Went with one fishing fly - a Deer Hair Popper. Fished for about an hour with no strikes.  Wind made things rough but kept at it.  Finally, had one take the fishing fly.  Not bad after no fishing these last few days.

Struck Out This Evening....

Went back to Ticky Creek and struck out this evening.  Did get one strike at the Sinker and Jig Rig.  But, did not hook it.  Still had a great time casting for distance with the BFS Black Phantom Carp Rod!

Ticky Creek Again!

Was able to fish the BFS Black Phantom Carp Rod we ordered from Big Carp Tackle this evening.  Used a Sinker and Jig Rig and a Roadrunner for the jig and was able to cast for distance!  Caught more than one this round compared to the other day.  No Keepers but still was fun.  Really liking the Carp Rod.... works like a champ when casting from the shore!

Clouser Gets a Bass at Bethany

Stopped by Bethany at Lunch today.  Went with Fly Fishing Gear and used a Red/White Clouser Minnow.  Water remains clear, fished for about 30" with one Bass caught and released.  With the one White Bass yesterday at Tickey Creek, and then the one Bass at Bethany today, hoping this is not the trend,... will see next round!

PS:  Package arrived via Fedex!  It was the order we placed with Big Carp Tackle in Oklahoma.  Ordered Sunday, shipped Monday, arrived Wednesday,  fast and convenient.  The BFS Black Phantom Carp Rods are looking like fish catchers.  Hope to try them out soon.  Liking the freebies that came with the Order, too!

Only One White Bass This Time

Ran up the road to a Ticky Creek Park on Lake Lavon.  Short on time but not enthusiasm, brought a Carp Rod and used it to "surf cast" from the lake's shore.  When the White Bass are active, can really have fun catching them on a Float and Jig Rig.  In today's case, only caught one White Bass.  So, it's a short video this time!

One Sunfish This Round

Windy day,... decided to take quick trip to Bethany this afternoon.  Had a few little Bluegill go for a Purple Grasshopper Variant but too small to hook up.  Then, had a Sunfish finally connect.  One Sunfish this round.  Till next time!

PS:  Placed an order with Big Carp Tackle in Oklahoma.  Have ordered from them in the past with excellent service and fast shipping.  This time ordered two BFS Black Phantom Rod MK II "Carp Classic" rods.  Liked how the MadDragon Carp Rod we bought from Bass Pro Shops casts when fishing Denison Dam.  Wanted to see if the Black Phantom would do as well - especially since we could get two Black Phantoms from Big Carp Tackle for the price of one MadDragon from Bass Pro Shops.

Slow Morning, Clear Water

Was a slow morning at Bethany.  Water was really clear and the fish were selective.  Had one Bass on the line but came off while landing it near the bank.  Then, had several Bass look and turn away at the last moment.  Finally, had two Sunfish take a Guadalupana,

Another Go at Denison Dam Tailrace

Another fishing trip Saturday to Denison Dam.  No generation, so minimal water flow.  Fished a pool downstream and enjoyed steady action.  Like other trips, Shad seemed to be the bait of choice!

Tenkara This Round at Bethany

Been having fun lately either fishing Lake Lavon or Denison Dam.  Recent rains put a slight delay in fishing but was able to get out yesterday and hit our favorite community lake.  Decided on using the Tenkara Rod and fished Bethany.  Caught a couple of little Bass, a nice Shellcracker, and then little Bluegill.  Used a Damsel Fly until it broke off when a Bruiser struck.  Switched to an Antron Streamer and caught the Shellcracker, then went with a Purple Grasshopper that a Bass and the Bluegill liked!  Fun stuff fishing with minimal gear!

Highland Park at Lake Lavon This Evening

Stopped by Highland Park at Lake Lavon this evening to throw the cast net and catch some Shad.  No luck on the Shad but did see others catching them.  While at the boat ramp, noticed two fishermen in a Bass boat waiting at the ramp.  As it turned out, they had hit a floating log and lost their outboard motor.... that is, it was still attached to the boat but just barely.  They had hit the log and damaged their boat, one fisherman was thrown into the water.  Good thing they had their life jackets on as it happened so quickly!

Another Go at Kayak Fishing Brockdale Park

Made a run to Brockdale Park to Kayak Fish for White Bass.  Met up with TFF's Mikes14 and worked the Point trolling Crappie Jigs and Roadrunners.  Lots of baitfish in the area, and a few fish lurking over the brushline, but overall the action was slow.  Regardless, had fun catching and releasing a few White Bass as well as putting a nice sized Crappie on the stringer!
