Fishing the Guad... at Huaco Springs!

Decided to give the Guadalupe River a try this morning.  Opted for Camp Huaco Springs as it was recently stocked last Friday.

When we arrived, could see the Rainbow Trout swimming about. NucLaroche worked one side of the river with an Ultralight Spinning Rig and caught two with PowerBait and three on a homemade Super Duper.

Fshng84 worked the other side using Fly Fishing Gear and caught four on a Prince Nymph and one on a COAF Guadalupana!

Fun stuff... with two limits taken on a chilly but sunny day!

Cold Morning... Caught a Limit!

Stopped by Bethany Lakes to fish this morning.  Really cold; rod guides were icing up.  Did see one limit taken, else the action was slow.

Tried catching them using fly fishing gear; had a few strikes but did not hook up.  After a couple of hours, headed to the house to warm up and add a few more layers to stay warm.

After a cup of coffee and when the feeling came back in my toes, headed back for another try. This time was able to catch two on PowerBait and three on a GRHEN!

Fun stuff but do dress warm!

Cold Morning... Ice On the Rod Guides

Checked out the morning bite at Bethany; saw one limit taken, else the action was slow. Did get a few strikes on a fishing fly but not able to set the hook.  Headed back to the house to warm up... cold morning with ice on the rod guides!

Another Evening Round at Bethany Lakes!

Late start Saturday.  Rainy day but luckily it stopped by evening.  Fished with PowerBait and caught five Trout to make a limit.

Slow action, taking three hours to limit out.  The last one took over an hour to catch but did have two nibbles between Trout #4 and Trout #5!

Fun stuff!

Late Start; Fished the Evening this Round!

Late start going fishing today.  Ended up fishing the evening bite at Bethany.  Action was slow with light strikes and missed hook sets being the norm.

Did get three using Trout Fishing Rig #2 (see PowerBait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout) PowerBait after about 1.5 hours.

After another 30", caught one on the second rod rigged with Trout Fishing Rig #1.  And then, 30" later caught the last one on the second rod as well.

Fun stuff... not bad for 2.5 hours on a quiet and cool (non-freezing temps) evening!

Another Round; Another Limit!

Back to Bethany this morning.  Temps in the 30s but no worries... action was steady on the Gold Super Duper!  Caught a limit of five!

Tried a steady retrieve without success.  Went back to what worked yesterday - count to 8-10, reel fast, then stop, repeat... and watch the line and rod tip for any hint of a strike!

Fun stuff!

Trout Stocking at Bethany Today!

Trout stocking at Bethany Lakes today.  Missed the truck releasing trout but luckily NucLaroche was able to get some footage!  Shortly after, he started hooking up with Rainbow Trout using PowerBait.  Caught three and lost a couple as well as missed a few hook sets.

Fshng84 gave it a try working a Gold Super Duper.  Managed to limit out with five, and then stood by and watched NucLaroche catch two to make his limit also using a Gold Super Duper!

Did notice that the trout tended to strike the lure as it fluttered when we stopped reeling. First tried a steady retrieve without success, and then did a stop and go retrieve that seemed to work... at least for this round.

Lots of fun, a number of limits being taken.  Action should be steady over the next few days... at least until the Cormorant arrive!

Question: What Fly Line Do We Use On Our Switch Rod?

Had a question from a Reader about the fly line we use for our switch rod.

We use a 6 Weight Switch Rod.  The fly line we use is a 9 Weight Ambush Triangle Taper from Royal Wulff.  Ordered it online from Red's Fly Shop.

Really like the fly line; really liked the fast shipping from Red's Fly Shop; works great with the Cabelas TLR 11' 6-Wt Switch Rod!

Slower But Steady Action at Waterloo This Round

Headed back to Denison this morning.  A layer of ice was showing on parts of the pond.  No worries, the Rainbow Trout were still biting.

Action was slower compared to yesterday but was steady!  Was able to get a limit of five; also saw others limiting out, too.  Used PowerBait Trout Dough Bait with Glitter and Extra Scent and an Ultralight Rod. Tried catching them with fishing flies but had no takers.

Fun time with cold temps but no wind and lots of sun!
PS:  Used Trout Fishing Rig #3 as noted in the online article - PowerBait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout.  The pond at Waterloo has a fountain that made a strong current where the Trout were lurking.  The rig worked well and held in place and made for more consistent hook ups!

Kicked Off the Season at Waterloo!

Headed to Denison today and fished Waterloo.  Was not sure if the pond was stocked with Rainbow Trout but was able to confirm that it was stocked after seeing another fisherman hook up!

Started fly fishing with zero strikes; switched to PowerBait and quickly caught three.  Went back to fly fishing and tried various fishing flies and retrieves.

Finally hooked up using a Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph and letting it sink for a 10-15 count. Used short retrieves and watched the line closely for any hint of a strike!

Did some catch and release fishing for a little while, then called it a day after keeping two caught on the fly!

PS:  Did see others limiting out using PowerBait, Power Eggs, and Corn!  Action was steady!

They Do Have a Few Nice Sized Ones Down There...!

Was out in Gruene picking up more fishing flies.  Did notice the nice looking Rainbow Trout hanging on the wall.  This one went 22" in length; much bigger than the 16" one we caught the other dat at Rio Raft.  Is good to know they have a few nice sized ones down there!

Snow Delay... Here is Another Guadalupe River Article

Snow delay, so no fishing as we bundle up to stay warm.  Heard from some of our Readers that traffic is bad and the commute is longer than normal.  Also, heard some are without power.... for us, we are online but the latest storm did break a tree limb that "nudged" the house.  No damage luckily!

So, till warmer weather, here is another article that may be of interest to Readers planning a trip to the Guadalupe River.... "Guadalupe River by L&L Campground: Rainbow Trout Fishing".

Caught a Few Scrappy Ones This Round

Short on time but the urge to fish would not go away.  Decided to grab the four weight fly rod and a COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly and head to the North Pond at Celebration Park.

Really light strikes but luckily got a fix on the hook set and caught a few Sunfish and Bluegill! Have found that catching these scrappy ones makes good practice for the Rainbow Trout that are soon to be stocked in the community lakes and ponds!

Fun stuff.... now going to hunker down during the cold front that is soon to arrive.

Another HubPages Article... COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly

Had a question from one of our Readers about the Guadalupana pattern we use.  Decided to post a HubPages article - "COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly", to provide more details on the variant of the Guadalupana that the Team uses.

It's smaller than the original pattern but seems to be a good fishing fly for the little Stocker Rainbow Trout we see in our area.

Do check it out when you get a chance!

Another Round at Rio Raft... Caught a Trout!

Fished the Guadalupe River at the Rio Raft access point today.  Was a really nice day, saw several Rainbow Trout but only managed to catch one!

It went 16" in length, too small for the minimum limit for the area we were fishing but still had a great time catching him.

Used a 6wt Switch Rod and a Tandem Midge and Prince Nymph Rig.  Trout struck the Prince Nymph!

Did work a pool for about an hour plus that had Trout feeding on something but could not get them to strike.

Tried midges, nymphs, dry flies, san juan worms, wooley buggers, guadalupanas,... the kitchen sink!  No worries though,... the 16" Rainbow Trout that went for the Prince Nymph was a great consolation prize!
