Waterloo and the Guadalupana Do Well This Round

Went to Waterloo Saturday afternoon.  Fished the four weight fly rod and a COAF Guadalupana in a Size 12.  Caught and released a number of Rainbow Trout.  Kept five to make a limit.  Did see others hooking up on Silver Super Dupers. Nice day to go fishing!

Field Study - Lures and Baits for Stocked Rainbow Trout

Here is a new article about the Team's work on collecting data when fishing for Rainbow Trout.

Do check it out when you get a chance - Field Study - Lures and Baits for Stocked Rainbow Trout.

Peak Rotary Vise and a COAF Guadalupana

Finally bought a Peak Rotary Vise.  Saw one several years ago at Bass Pro Shops in Garland; liked it but opted not to buy one.

Been holding off on buying one since then.  Had a deal online that I could not pass up (also had gift cards and rewards points that knocked the price down to under $100).

Came in the mail yesterday; tied a fly today... really like it!

Light Strikes at Waterloo This Round

Headed to Denison Saturday afternoon and fished Waterloo.  Recently stocked in preparation for the Trout Derby held that morning; the bite was steady.

Three of us fished and managed to take three limits.  NucLaroche and T-Bone caught them on PowerBait and Ultralight Gear.  Fshng84 fished a COAF Guadalupana and a Four Weight Fly Rod.

The strikes were light but the Team did manage to take five each! Even caught one of the tagged Trout from the Derby!  Fun stuff!

COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly - Samples

A Reader sent an email asking about purchasing a COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly.  We pointed him to the COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly  article that describes how to make one. However, the Reader was adamant about purchasing one rather than making one.  So, we offered a sample fishing fly for his use... looks like others have asked as well.

To make things easier (since we prefer to fish rather than make fishing flies), we created a "Buy Now" PayPal button for anyone who would like a sample fishing fly.  Only made a few fishing flies but can make more (time permitting) on a periodic basis.

If the PayPal button does not work or if we are sold out of samples, email us at coaf.weblog@live.com to let us know there is an issue.

Thanks,
COAF Field Team

Note:  Samples available only in the United States and in USD ($) only.  Limit one fishing fly per order at $2.00 (+ 60 cents shipping/handling).

A Limit at Waterloo to Close Out the Year!

Decided to head to Denison this afternoon to fish Waterloo Park Pond for one more shot at Rainbow Trout in 2013.  Caught a limit - one on a GRHEN and four on a COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly.

Light strikes, had to pay close attention to the line and feel of the strike.  Missed several strikes, but was able to hook a few!

Fun stuff... especially after two weeks since the pond was stocked.  No worries though; the next stocking is this weekend!

Round Three at Huaco Springs

Round three at Huaco Springs started early this morning.  Fished a COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly on the Four Weight Fly Rod and caught a limit of Trout!  Strikes were light compared to yesterday and fish were really "picky" about the size of the fishing fly.  No takers on a Size 14 but lots of action on the Size 12.

Fishing buddy also limited out using an Ultralight Rod and a Bubble Fly Rig.  Had four Trout go for the COAF Guadalupana, and one Trout take a BH GRHEN!

Fun stuff... did see others taking them on Silver Super Dupers, Orange Power Bait, and Marshmallows.  Also, when we first arrived, saw one nice sized Trout caught by one fisherman!

Nice to know there are some Bruisers lurking in the area!

Huaco Springs... Round Two!

Another go at Huaco Springs gets more Rainbow Trout!  Fshng84 gets five using a Four Weight Fly Rod and a COAF Guadalupana; NucLaroche gets five, too - two on a Silver Duper and three on a Bubble Fly Rig and a COAF Guadalupana!  Also, one guest fisherman with the Team gets a Rainbow Trout using a Silver Duper!

Fun day on the Guadalupe; even better that they stocked the River around 11AM, too!  Action was steady with some hot moments when the Trout were feeding on the surface!

Another Try on the Guad...

Fished a new place just downriver from Mountain Breeze Resort.  Promising area in the Trophy Zone.  Only managed to catch a Longear Sunfish on a COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly.  Did see two other fishermen, who caught a Trout and lost a Trout.  Good to know there are fish lurking in the area!

Fishing the Guad... at Huaco Springs!

Decided to give the Guadalupe River a try this morning.  Opted for Camp Huaco Springs as it was recently stocked last Friday.

When we arrived, could see the Rainbow Trout swimming about. NucLaroche worked one side of the river with an Ultralight Spinning Rig and caught two with PowerBait and three on a homemade Super Duper.

Fshng84 worked the other side using Fly Fishing Gear and caught four on a Prince Nymph and one on a COAF Guadalupana!

Fun stuff... with two limits taken on a chilly but sunny day!

Cold Morning... Caught a Limit!

Stopped by Bethany Lakes to fish this morning.  Really cold; rod guides were icing up.  Did see one limit taken, else the action was slow.

Tried catching them using fly fishing gear; had a few strikes but did not hook up.  After a couple of hours, headed to the house to warm up and add a few more layers to stay warm.

After a cup of coffee and when the feeling came back in my toes, headed back for another try. This time was able to catch two on PowerBait and three on a GRHEN!

Fun stuff but do dress warm!

Cold Morning... Ice On the Rod Guides

Checked out the morning bite at Bethany; saw one limit taken, else the action was slow. Did get a few strikes on a fishing fly but not able to set the hook.  Headed back to the house to warm up... cold morning with ice on the rod guides!

Another Evening Round at Bethany Lakes!

Late start Saturday.  Rainy day but luckily it stopped by evening.  Fished with PowerBait and caught five Trout to make a limit.

Slow action, taking three hours to limit out.  The last one took over an hour to catch but did have two nibbles between Trout #4 and Trout #5!

Fun stuff!

Late Start; Fished the Evening this Round!

Late start going fishing today.  Ended up fishing the evening bite at Bethany.  Action was slow with light strikes and missed hook sets being the norm.

Did get three using Trout Fishing Rig #2 (see PowerBait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout) PowerBait after about 1.5 hours.

After another 30", caught one on the second rod rigged with Trout Fishing Rig #1.  And then, 30" later caught the last one on the second rod as well.

Fun stuff... not bad for 2.5 hours on a quiet and cool (non-freezing temps) evening!

Another Round; Another Limit!

Back to Bethany this morning.  Temps in the 30s but no worries... action was steady on the Gold Super Duper!  Caught a limit of five!

Tried a steady retrieve without success.  Went back to what worked yesterday - count to 8-10, reel fast, then stop, repeat... and watch the line and rod tip for any hint of a strike!

Fun stuff!

Trout Stocking at Bethany Today!

Trout stocking at Bethany Lakes today.  Missed the truck releasing trout but luckily NucLaroche was able to get some footage!  Shortly after, he started hooking up with Rainbow Trout using PowerBait.  Caught three and lost a couple as well as missed a few hook sets.

Fshng84 gave it a try working a Gold Super Duper.  Managed to limit out with five, and then stood by and watched NucLaroche catch two to make his limit also using a Gold Super Duper!

Did notice that the trout tended to strike the lure as it fluttered when we stopped reeling. First tried a steady retrieve without success, and then did a stop and go retrieve that seemed to work... at least for this round.

Lots of fun, a number of limits being taken.  Action should be steady over the next few days... at least until the Cormorant arrive!

Question: What Fly Line Do We Use On Our Switch Rod?

Had a question from a Reader about the fly line we use for our switch rod.

We use a 6 Weight Switch Rod.  The fly line we use is a 9 Weight Ambush Triangle Taper from Royal Wulff.  Ordered it online from Red's Fly Shop.

Really like the fly line; really liked the fast shipping from Red's Fly Shop; works great with the Cabelas TLR 11' 6-Wt Switch Rod!

Slower But Steady Action at Waterloo This Round

Headed back to Denison this morning.  A layer of ice was showing on parts of the pond.  No worries, the Rainbow Trout were still biting.

Action was slower compared to yesterday but was steady!  Was able to get a limit of five; also saw others limiting out, too.  Used PowerBait Trout Dough Bait with Glitter and Extra Scent and an Ultralight Rod. Tried catching them with fishing flies but had no takers.

Fun time with cold temps but no wind and lots of sun!
PS:  Used Trout Fishing Rig #3 as noted in the online article - PowerBait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout.  The pond at Waterloo has a fountain that made a strong current where the Trout were lurking.  The rig worked well and held in place and made for more consistent hook ups!
