Out and About This Round

Decided to try some other places to fish this round.  Started at Russell Creek Park Pond in Plano.  Was hoping to fish for Bluegill in their beds using the Size 12 COAF Damsel Fly. Ended up striking out.

Went on to the pond at Davis Library and struck out again.  Did try for Bass in their beds but no takers.  Also, tried a Bread Fly on several large Koi.  No luck either.

Moved on to Oak Point Park Preserve in Plano; managed one little Bass on the Size 12 COAF Damsel Fly.

Went on to Allen and tried Kroger Park Pond (officially Bethany Ridge Park).  Saw several Bass but no Bluegill; Bass were not interested in being caught!

Then, went across the street to Bethany Lakes and caught several Bass using the COAF Damsel Fly.  Had to call it quits though but...

Made one last stop at the Feeder Creek that flows into the Shadow Lakes series of ponds. Managed a Bass, lost a decent Bass, and then caught several Panfish to include a Longear Sunfish, a Sunfish, and a Bluegill.

Liked the smaller Size 12 COAF Damsel Fly but be prepared for smaller fish overall.

Bass On Damsel Flies This Round

Fished with a COAF Damsel Fly this time at Bethany Lakes; had several misses but did land four Bass! Largest was caught by the waterfall in a shallow pocket.

Really liking our variant of the Damsel Fly. Works well this time of year when the Bass are tending to strike at fishing flies that bounce the bottom which is why we use the it as it tends to ride hook bend up when fished making for less hang ups on the bottom!

PS:  Stay tuned, will be posting another fly tying article that details how we make a COAF Damsel Fly!

Update:  Here is the article on how we make a COAF Damsel Fly!

Bass On The Fly This Time

Fun time catching Bass on the fly yesterday afternoon.  Cooler temps but did get several to take a fishing fly - used a Dry Fly, Olive Wooley Bugger, and a White Guadalupana.  Fun stuff!

Quick Trip This Round

Late start today but did make it for a quick trip to Bethany Lakes.  Caught a few Sunfish and Bluegill; little guys but still fun to catch.  All went for a Griffith's Gnat.

Fun with Panfish

Had fun catching Panfish today.  Worked the Waterfall and the Lower Pond and hooked and landed a number of Bluegill and Sunfish!  Midges, Dry Flies, Griffith;s Gnats, Prince Nymph... all were working with the bigger fish going for the Griffith's Gnat. Suspect its "bugginess" is what attracted the fish!

Missed a Couple But Did Get One!

Fished Bethany this afternoon; caught little Sunfish and Bluegill. Then, noticed several Catfish feeding on bread in the Canal.  Tried a Bread Fly, a Wooley Bugger, and a Leech without luck.

Decided to try a COAF San Juan Worm Ball - a variation of a San Juan Worm fishing fly that we tied this past Winter on a whim. Supposed to simulate a ball of worms rolling in the current.

Hooked a Bruiser but lost it while trying to land it, then hooked another - not as big, but lost it while trying to land it.  Finally, hooked and landed one that went about 18" in size!

For those that are interested, here is an article on how we tie a COAF San Juan Worm Ball.

Only One Bass This Round

Short on time; only one Bass this time at Bethany yesterday.  Did miss two others.  Since only one Bass, decided to post a video in HD.

Slower Bite; Three Bass This Round

Went back to Bethany for another round.  Brought Spinning Gear and Senkos. Slower bite but did get three Bass.  Tried a Carolina Rig but quickly went back to the Weightless Texas Rig. No Bruisers; still a lot of fun... sure beats work any day!

Six Bass at Bethany This Time!

Returned to Bethany for another round.  Same setup as yesterday - Bait Casting Rod and Senkos.  Caught six Bass - three on a Watermelon Senko and three on a Purple Senko!

Brought the Go Pro this time, so got a few action shots this time.  Bass were taking the worm but had to use a slow retrieve at first.  Things did pick up later when the Bass started feeding on the surface on something; in that case, a faster retrieve seemed to work.

Bass at Bethany This Round

Windy day but nice temps; gave it a shot at Bethany this afternoon.  Went with a Baitcasting Rod and Senkos.  Managed to miss a few as well as hook a few.  No Bruisers but still lots of fun! No action shots but did get some video.  Miscounted the Bass; thought it was seven but it turned out to be eight!

Catfish and Bullheads on Bread!

Enjoying the later sunset since the time change this past weekend. Been tough getting a round in fishing but did manage to get out for a quick trip to Celebration Park's East Pond.

Fished with Bread and free-lined it using Spinning Gear.  Also, brought the hook setter we bought a couple of years or so ago. Was able to catch a Bullhead and a Catfish with the hook setter and another Bullhead without it.

The Bullheads went about 12" in size with big tummies probably from all the Bread in the water. The Catfish was a Bruiser, estimating ~22" in size!  This one makes the Fish Bulletin Board!

Little Bluegill and Sunfish on Midges this Round!

Fished Bethany Lakes this afternoon; really nice day with warmer temps compared to yesterday.

Was hoping for Bass this round; ended with little Bluegill and Sunfish using Midges.  Really little guys but with a Size 20 Midge was able to catch and release a few!

Not a bad day to spend on a warm, sunny day!

One Bass, One Catfish

Fished a Senko this morning at Bethany.  Had a strike and a miss, then a strike and a hook-up, and a strike and another miss!  One Bass on the Senko was the result.

Then, switched to Bread; caught a Catfish that went about 16" in size.  Took about 15" for the bite; tried one more cast using Bread.  No more hook-ups, so called it a morning.

Still a lot of fun.  Was good to see Senkos and Bread are working!

One On a Grasshopper!

Went to the Bethany this afternoon.  Brought the Four Weight and a Foam Rubber Grasshopper we tied the other day.  Windy conditions and a little warmer;  was looking for some top water action.  Had one taker... a little Bass!  Not a bad start to the upcoming Spring.

Missed Hook Ups This Round

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening.  Used a four weight fly rod and a jig fishing fly. Three misses this round; one was a Bass.  The other two we could not tell but one felt like a Bruiser. Tough go this round!  Here is the video of one of the missed fish.

A Sunfish, a Little Catfish, and a Green LED Fishing Light Field Test

Fished Murphy City Hall Pond for Trout.  Ended up breaking off the last Size 12 COAF Guadalupana in the fly box.  Had been a consistent producer for Trout.  Gonna have to tie more and refill the fly box.

Switched to a Prince Nymph and struck out, then switched to Bread and started getting some strikes but no hook ups. Had brought a Bread Fly in hopes of hooking a fish with it.  Ended up catching a Sunfish and a little Catfish on Bread.

Did get a chance to test out the 6v Green LED Fishing Light.  Worked great; still working on the 9v version of it.  Circuit board is done; just need to get the PVC body completed.

Cold evening but still a lot of fun!

Fly Tying - Simple Foam Rubber Grasshopper

Cold temps and sleet, stayed indoors today. But, here is an article from the Team in preparation for warmer weather.  It's an article that provides instructions on tying a "Simple Foam Rubber Grasshopper"!

Too Nice a Day to Spend Indoors!

Too nice a day to spend indoors; went back out in the afternoon for some catch and release fishing!  This time in Murphy.

Had a tough time but did manage to hook four Trout!  Also, noticed chumming with bread made a difference in getting the Trout and Bluegill to feed on the surface.

Was able to take advantage of this by casting the COAF Guadalupana near the drifting pieces of bread that were being blown across the pond!

Fun stuff... Will play tomorrow by ear as the weather is not looking good.

Bite Was Good at Towne Lake This Morning!

Bite was good at Towne Lake this morning!  Brought the Switch Rod and was able to make long cast to the middle of the pond and get a Trout or two or three.  Fast retrieve was the key at first.  Then, a slower (drifting) retrieve worked.

Did see others doing well on small Nymphs, Wooley Buggers, and Midges as well as Silver Super Dupers. Ended the morning with a limit of Trout!
