Foam Damsel Fly Worked Well - 18 Bass and 10 Bluegill!

Fished Bethany this evening with the Four Weight Fly Rod and a Foam Damsel Fly.  The one we used the other day lost its tail after catching two Bass.  This round made more than one in case it happened again. Luckily it did not; the little fishing fly took a beating but held up even after catching (and releasing) 18 Bass and 10 Bluegill!

Lotta fun; really liking this pattern.  Simple to tie; minimal material.  Only big expense was buying the Foam Cutter.  Bought it on a whim when we ordered the Beavertail Foam Cutter since the $5.00 shipping cost was the same for one or two cutters.

Stay tuned, plan to post an article on the fishing fly pattern... gonna call it the "Fly Tying - Simple Foam Damsel Fly"!

Kroger Park Then Bethany This Round

Fished Kroger Park (officially Bethany Ridge Park) pond and caught a Bass on a Beavertail Grasshopper.  Then, went across the street and fished Bethany Lakes and caught several more Bass, using a Foam Damsel Fly and a Foam Grasshopper.

Had ordered some Foam Cutters to make a variant of the Foam Grasshopper that we tie.  It's a Beavertail Foam Cutter that is used to make a Chernobyl Ant.  Used it to make a Beavertail Grasshopper.

Also, ordered a Damsel Fly Foam Cutter; used it to make a Foam Damsel Fly the mimics the Dragonflies that the Bass were feeding on.  Too bad it only lasted two fish before the tail was torn off!

Liking the Foam Cutters and especially liking the Foam Damsel Fly.... very easy to tie using a minimum of material!

Check out today's video.  Action was slower compared to yesterday but regardless, had a fun time and was able to "test" a promising new fly pattern!

Bass Catching Another Bass!

Here is a video clip of the Bass that chased another little Bass while we had one on the hook! Was able to zoom in on the action and slow the video down.  Check it out!

Murphy City Hall Pond for Bass!

Had fun fishing Murphy City Hall pond for Bass this morning. Caught five Bass and a Bluegill. Largest Bass went 15" and 14".  Did get a cool action shot of a Bass chasing another little Bass while fighting one on the line!  Cool stuff... never had that happen before.  Even saw the little Bass jump out of the water to get away!  All went for a Foam Grasshopper!

Another Round at Bethany This Evening

Another round at Bethany this evening.  Action was not as good as yesterday but it stayed steady. Caught Bass using the new - Redington Pursuit 4WT 8'.  Rod feels good; too bad the hook sets were not in time.  Missed a number of Bass.  Started fishing a Foam Grasshopper in Size 8.  Caught a couple; missed more than a couple.  Switched to a Size 12 and was hooking them but kept losing the bigger ones when they threw the hook.  Settled on a Size 10 and had more caught then missed with it.  Liking the new fly rod; still liking the top water action on the Grasshoppers!

Redington Pursuit 4wt 8' Fly Rod

Was looking for another fly rod to go with a Ross 3/4 Weight Reel.  Happened on a few fly rods on sale at Cabelas; this one caught my eye - Redington Pursuit 4wt 8' Fly Rod.  Came with a Rod Tube, too.  Sale price was $99, on check out, price rang up lower.  Total price out the door came to $76!  Gotta love it when Cabelas knock a price down, they do knock them down!

Bruiser Shellcracker Takes a Foam Grasshopper!

Here is a picture of the 9" Shellcracker that went for a Foam Grasshopper!  Thought it was a Bass at first.  This one made the Fish Bulletin Board... Cool beans!

25 Bass and a Big Shellcracker on Foam Grasshoppers This Round!

Went back to Bethany Lakes Thursday for another round of fishing.  Used the Foam Grasshopper Variant that has been working well lately.  This round it continued to do well with 25 Bass and a Big Shellcracker caught and released.  No Bruiser Bass but the Shellcracker did go 9" in length! Fun stuff!

Bass Were Liking Grasshoppers This Round!

Another round at Bethany this evening. Brought another Crawdad Pattern to test. Was able to get one Bass to take it, else action was slow.

Switched to a Prince Nymph and started catching Bluegill and Sunfish; caught several and then decided to try a Grasshopper.

Started with a Size 10 White Grasshopper.  Caught a Bass, missed several others, and then caught one finally.  Then, switched to a Size 8 Green Grasshopper.  Ended up catching more Bass with more consistent hook sets!

Fun stuff... Bass were liking Grasshoppers this round!

Another Crawdad Pattern!

Tried a different Crawdad Pattern this evening. Made of Marabou and a Bead Chain for eyes. Caught several and lost one.  More tweaking of the pattern but think we are getting close to a simple pattern that is easy to tie  but effective still! Fun stuff.

Nice Day; Caught Several Fish

Nice day, too nice not to go fishing. So, headed to Bethany to see what was biting this morning. Slow action but did catch a little Bass and then some Bluegill.  Used a Strike Indicator and a Prince Nymph fished 1.5' below the indicator.

Grasshoppers Again!

Fished Bethany Lakes this afternoon in hopes of trying a new Crawdad Pattern.  Had a couple of strikes, and then lost the fishing fly.

Switched to a White Grasshopper and hooked a few Bluegill and Bass; lost the White Grasshopper, so switched to a Yellow Grasshopper.

Hood a few, missed a few... forgot that the Yellow Grasshopper was barbless... needed to keep constant pressure else fish was lost

Had a good time, regardless!

Crawdad Pattern This Time!

Went with a Crawdad Pattern this morning and headed to Bethany.  Caught four Bass, largest went 16" in length.  Fun stuff... going to tweak the pattern a little more; think we may have our version of a simple but effective Crawdad Fishing Fly!

Steady Action at Bethany with a Grasshopper!

Went to Bethany Friday evening for another round of fishing.  Slow at first but once we found the pattern, it was steady action the remainder of the time.

Algae and other "greenery" is growing, so lures and fishing flies tend to foul more.  Started out with a COAF Damsel Fly and had a few follow it but no takers.  Switched to a Foam Grasshopper and hooked up with several Bass.  Caught a few, lost a few, and then bite quit near sunset.

A "hatch" was going on, and Bass and Bluegill were feeding on the bugs.  A quick switch to a Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook enabled a few more hook ups.

Fun stuff!

Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook Made a Difference This Round!

Cold front came and changed the pattern slightly.  Had a couple of Bass strike at the Purple COAF Damsel Fly but messed up on the hook set; did manage to land one.  Not a Bruiser but still counts!

And then, noticed bugs flying about and ripples in the water where something was feeding on them.  Seen this happen in the past after a cold front passes and things start to warm up, a hatch occurs and then the Bass and Bluegill start feeding on them.

Good thing we had a Griffith's Gnat Variant handy.  It's the one we tied using a Caddis Hook. Made a difference this round, catching a few, missing a few, having fun with all of them!

Bethany Lakes For More Fishing!

Rain and more rain this morning. Decided to put on rain gear, and give Bethany Lakes a try. Good thing... caught Bass, a couple of Bruiser Catfish, and then lost a big one (think it was a Catfish).

Bent the fly rod double; same fly rod that was used to land a 6 pound bass several years ago. The Bass did not bend the fly rod near as much as the one that was lost today!  Fun stuff... good to know Bruisers are still lurking in the area.

The Bass, one of the Catfish, and the lost fish took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  The other Catfish went for a COAF San Juan Worm Ball. Fun stuff!

Video... fishing the COAF Damsel Fly.

HubPages Article - "Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook"

Here is a variant of the Griffith's Gnat to try for Bluegill - Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook. It's a simple tie and few material is needed.  Used a Caddis Hook and Olive Tying Thread; did not have any dry fly hooks or black tying thread.

Bethany Lakes for a Round!

Went back out for another round of fishing; this time went to Bethany Lakes.  Having run out this morning, tied a purple COAF Damsel Fly to restock the fly box.  This time used red tying thread instead of olive.  Not sure if it made a difference but did catch eight Bass this round. Fun stuff!

Stoney Hollow Park Again This Morning

Decided to fish Stoney Hollow again.  Same setup as yesterday - Five Weight Rod and a COAF Damsel Fly. Windy conditions but the action was steady.

Caught three Bass and a Sunfish, and then had video camera issues.  Ended up erasing the video; User error!

No worries; kept fishing and caught two Crappie and a Bass and Bluegill using the Purple COAF Damsel Fly in size 12.  And then, lost the fishing fly to a snag on the backcast.

Switched to an Olive COAF Damsel Fly in size 10 and caught more Bass and Bluegill. Not sure how many were caught and released as well as threw the hook; no matter... had a great time fishing!

PS: Need to tie more; down to one Olive COAF Damsel Fly and no Purple ones.  Gave one away to another fisherman; hope it helps him catch a Bass or two!
