Cabela's Fort Worth

Took the opportunity to stop by Cabela's while in Fort Worth today.  Restocked on fishing flies, checked out the gear, took a few pictures of the fishes!

Later, stopped by Bethany Lakes in the early evening.  Observed a few fishermen catching Trout on Bread.  And, saw some activity with Trout feeding on the surface; flyfished for them without success.

March 1, 2009 - Limited Out @ Towne Lake.

Fished the early afternoon with the action picking up later in the day. Able to take another limit of Trout at McKinney's Towne Lake. However, action has slowed compared to last week. Took about 2 hours to get a limit, and the frequency of bites was lower than last week. First three were caught using Corn fished on the bottom. Last two were taken on Bread free-lined using a treble hook. Checked stomach contents. Two had Corn, one had a Crappie Nibble in Chartruese. Remainder were empty. Noted others fishing the surface were having good success. Lures and flyfishing did not appear to be productive. FYI: Cormorant arrived and started chasing/eating the Trout. Best bet is to fish Towne Lake sooner than later as the Cormorant will take their share quickly. Click-on DFW Fishing News for more fishing information in the Metroplex area. February 22, 2009 - 4 Rainbows and a "Gold" Trout!

Continued success at McKinney's Towne Lake with another limit of Trout - 4 Rainbows and 1 "Gold" Trout. All were caught using Orange Powerbait but did get strikes on Corn, Bread, and a Gold Super Duper. Checked stomach contents. All had Corn, two had Orange Power Bait, and one had Bread. Observed others taking limits with Powerbait and lures - Gold Super Dupers, Silver Super Dupers, and Spinners. Also, noted several people flyfishing but could not tell if they were successful. Trout and a Bluegill!

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Caught one Trout and lost another using Bread for bait. Also, caught and released a large Bluegill that went just over 9" in size. Pretty nice fight on light tackle.

Fish were actively feeding on the surface ealry in the evening but was unable to get them to strike on the fly.

Switched to spinning gear and tried Gold and Copper Super Dupers without success. Then, tried Black, White, and Yellow Rooster Tails without luck.

Went to Powerbait and Bread. No strikes on Powerbait but did get them on Bread. FYI: Heard from others that Velveeta worked earlier in the day.

Interesting Find Today.

Fished Bethany Lakes this afternoon. Still cold but wind was light compared to yesterday. Caught a limit of Trout using a flyrod to freeline the bait. Also, used spinning gear to freeline the bait since the wind was light. Both worked well today. Still need to maintain minimal drag on the strike and allow time for the fish to take the bait. Else, plan for a lot of missed hooksets. Interesting find today! Checked the stomach contents - Yellow Powerbait Corn Nuggets including one with a hook embedded, the usual Bread as expected, and a Rock. Not sure why the Rock triggered a strike; may have looked like a piece of bait. Today's Catch. Click-on DFW Fishing News for more fishing information in the Metroplex area. Cold Morning But Another Limit.

Cold morning at Bethany Lakes but was able to catch another limit of Trout . Temperature was 23 degrees with a windchill of 9 degrees. Luckily, the fish were biting making the cold bearable. Used Bread for bait but did not use a bobber due to windy conditions. Tried free-lining but the wind also made it tough. Ended up using my flyrod like a cane pole and molding Bread around the fishing fly. Was able to control the line and not spook the fish on the strike. Key this morning was no drag on the strike, else the fish were letting go. FYI: Stomach contents - Three with Bread and Corn. One with Bread and a Powerbait Corn Nugget. One was empty. Today's Pictures. Click-on DFW Fishing News for more fishing information in the Metroplex area. Limit of 5 Trout.

Early start this morning made for a limit of five Trout at Bethany Lakes. Fish were caught in less than an hour with consistent hits throughout. Used Bread for bait and also managed to take a Trout flyfishing a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. But, the fish may have struck the fishing fly because it looked like a piece of Bread. Decided not to count it as a fly-caught Trout till I get consistent strikes. FYI: Fished the Bread using a bobber and setting the depth at 3'-4'. Also, examined the stomach contents. Noted Bread, Corn, and mix of Corn/Bread. No midges found like last year. Plan to keep using bait.

Stopped by Celebration Park's East Pond and checked out the fish. Bluegill and Sunfish remain active, catching a few small ones flyfishing a Prince Nymph just below the water's surface. Also, the Catfish continue to bite on Bread although they are much smaller than ones caught this summer. Sampling of today's catch posted below. Sampling of Today's Catch. Shadow Lakes (AM) / Celebration Park (PM)

Fished one of the feeder creek ponds at Shadow Lakes Saturday morning. Caught several Bluegill, a small fingerling Bass, and then a nice Bluegill that went about 8.5"+ in size. Caught them flyfishing using variations of the Teeny Nymph. Went out later in the evening to Celebration Park. Caught small Bluegill and a small fingerling Catfish, and then a 20"+ Catfish. Gave a good fight and released all that were caught. Chummed with White Bread and then followed with baited hook with no sinker. Posted videos of both outings below and in the Video Player above. Check it out some time. Good luck and good fishing! Shadow Lakes Celebration Park Checkout DFW Fishing News for more fishing information. Click-on DFW Fishing News.

Celebration Park - March 7, 2008

Stopped at Celebration Park. Cold and windy with minimal activity at the North Pond. No surface action at the East Pond. Shifted to chumming with bread making sure they sank before slowly crawling the Cigarette Egg Fly along the chummed bottom.

Caught one small Catfish and missed three other strikes. And then, called it an outing. Too cold since I did not bring gloves.

Celebration Park - March 5, 2008

Fished the East Pond using the Bread Fly and the Cigarette Egg Fly this evening. Chummed with bread and then caught several Bluegill and Sunfish. Catfish showed and actively fed on the chum but could not get a solid strike.

Another flyfishermen was fishing the pond and caught several Bluegill on a midge pattern, and then caught more with the Cigarette Egg Fly.

Overall a nice day considering yesterday's snow.

Towne Lake - March 1, 2008

Fished Towne Lake in McKinney for Trout this afternoon. Fishing partner caught 3 and I caught 4 for a total of 7 fish - ranging from 8" to 11" in size. Fished using a Carolina Rig and bread. Trout semed to ignore the corn.

Cleaned the fish and checked their stomach contents. Stomachs were empty other than the bread used to take them.

Weather permitting, may try Towne Lake again. Or, try a local pond to continue field testing the Cigarette Egg Fly or Bread Fly patterns.

Celebration Park - February 29, 2008

Fished the North Pond to run another field test of the Cigarette Egg Fly - a fly pattern tied using material from a cigarette filter. Caught five Bluegill/Sunfish in less than 15" with a lot more missed strikes.

Bluegill and Sunfish readily struck the Cigarette Egg Fly. Fish were caught on the surface as well as below when the fly slowly sank.

Also, did not chum with Bread until after landing the first fish. Wanted to take one on the fly without chum.

At this point, the team plans to add this pattern to their arsenal of Panfishing Flies.

Good luck and good fishing!

FAQ - "Preferred Bait and Rig for Trout Fishing"

While fishing for Trout in the community lakes in the local area, our team is frequently asked: "What bait are we using?" and "How are we rigging our fishing poles?"

We don't consider ourselves fishing experts but willingly provide information and tips to others. The following are the answers to those questions for your reference.

Good luck and good fishing!

"What bait are we using?"
Typically we use Corn when fishing for Trout. It is cheap and works well after a Trout stocking. We also keep Bread, Cheese with Garlic, Salmon Eggs, and Trout PowerBait on hand in case the Trout are selective. Since things change from year to year, one bait may outfish what worked the year before.

"How are we rigging our fishing poles?"
Normally we fish the bottom using a Carolina Rig. We opt to fish on the bottom when we first arrive at a fishing area but will shift to fishing with a Bobber / Bubble Float, casting lures, and flyfishing. Adjusting as the situation dicatates. For your information, the illustration below details the Carolina Rigged Corn, the rig we use when fishing with Corn on the bottom.
