This round we fished Warren Sports Complex for the Trout Stocking in Frisco. Past years the tout were stocked at the Frisco Commons pond. This year and maybe going forward, the Warren Sports Complex was stocked.
The annual Trick A Trout Derby was held yesterday, but it sounds like the trout were stocked during the week instead of early Saturday morning.
The bite was slow with some limits observed; we suspect the change in temps - dropped 30 degrees from yesterday, had something to do with the slow down in the action.
Moreover, it is a big pond; more like a lake. Seemed like the trout were deep or lurking near the waterflow along the North bank - the one with the concrete retaining wall.
Second of a three box subscription that yours truly received as a Christmas Gift. Decided on the Panfish and Trout option because we have had good luck with the light weight lures that target panfish and trout…. and more important, can be used for Bait Finesse System aka ultralight baitcasting.
This round had five lures of which the Slim John Spoon at 1/12oz and Crappie Jigs at 1/16oz should work well with the BFS Combos we have!
Do check back; hope to catch a fish or two with them!
Below is a series of posts originally posted in October 2017. We were attempting to make a wooden trout net made with inexpensive material purchased from Home Depot.
The trout has done well for us over the years with a couple of modifications made to the netting. Initially, we used a plastic rubber lacing that worked but tended to stiffen as the Winter temps dropped to the 40s and lower.
Since then, we purchased a rubber net attached to the wood frame using zip ties. The zip ties had some rough edges that we made smooth using a kayak repair soldering iron.
Do check out the series of posts!
Q&A: DIY Wooden Trout Net...! #flyfishing
Held a YouTube Q&A session to answer questions from Readers about the wooden trout net we are making. Intent was to build one that would be durable, did not tangle with fishing flies when landing a fish, and could be made cheaply without special tools...
DIY Wooden Trout Net is coming along! #diy #woodentroutnet
Net is coming along nicely. All that is left is the netting. Should be done well before the Trout Stocking Season! Recapping past posts are pics for reference:

Almost Done...!
DIY Wooden Trout Net is Done, and new Echo Ion Reel Arrived....! #flyfishing
Banner day today! Finished the DIY Wooden Trout Net well before the Winter Trout Stocking Season! Will be shifting to fly tying in preparation for the the trout stockings on the Blue River in Oklahoma in November!
Also, new Echo Ion Reel arrived in 10/12 weight, balances well with the Cabelas TLR Switch Rod in 8 weight! Fished it with Lee Wullf's Triangle Taper Ambush fly line in 350 grain... can get some great casts with minimal effort with it. Still have the two 6 weights at the ready for trout; will hope to target Stripers with the 8 weight... hopefully, at Denison Dam's tailrace!
Here is a video describing the DIY Wooden Trout Net. It's not perfect but was cheap to make, can hold at least 10 pounds with no issue, and no longer have to deal with fumbling around with the release since this one is magnetic versus a clip like our old one!
DIY Wooden Trout Net | Do Over Anyone?
Had some issues with the DIY Wooden Trout Net that I made several seasons back. In colder weather the lacing tended to become stiff and did not open up well. Sure enough the trout were able to jump out of the net and back into the water.
Decided to order a net from Amazon. Net arrived yesterday, and in short order and a few zip ties later, I have a net that will definitely hold a fish or two! Do check out the video, added pictures at the end of the "Do Over" variation of the original net. Plus added a snippet of the video from the original net.
Blue River Fishing Tips | Suggestions To Keep In Mind | #blueriverok
This round we answer the mail concerning suggestions for fishing the Blue River, Oklahoma... this includes using the soldering iron for repairing kayaks to smooth the zip ties!
Specifically, we talk about the walking stick, landing net and modifications to it, and then the fishing flies we used to get our first trout and first limit this season.
Plus we added snippets of the YouTube Shorts - https://youtu.be/cflUkqLfi-s, that showed the Stop and Go Retrieve, as well as some recent pictures others posted of some nice trout caught on the Blue!
Check it out and keep the suggestions in mind next trip!
We appreciate your support for our website and weblog, and we look forward to continuing to provide useful fishing information to our Readers as 2014 closes and 2015 begins.
Sincerely, COAF Field Team
Out and About Podcast
...on another note, looked like Fshng84 sent in another report from Bethany Lakes while he was on a morning run. The Podcast is posted below, do check it out. Key notes this time were:
Trout were rising, surface activity looked promising for PowerWorms
Also, would try a Fishing Fly on a Bobber Fly Rig
Trout were taking Velveeta Cheese under a Bobber
Similar to other days when Super Dupers were getting bites, would anticipate the same today
Heard from the Field Team again! Looks like Glenn continues to fish Bethany Lakes using the COAF Griffith's Gnat. Luckily, three Trout went for the pattern although one was lost while bringing it in.
He had to wait until the early evening when the Trout started rising/feeding on something on the surface. Here are key notes from today:
Drop in temperatures and windy conditions made it tough to hook up; overall action remained slow during the mid-day period
Action did pick up later in the afternoon/early evening with Bubble Fly Rigs and PowerWorms doing well
Also, noted Velveeta Cheese fished with a Bobber were doing well in the early evening
COAF Griffith's Gnat came through when sight casting to rising Trout also in the early evening
Silver Super Duper did well for some; cast for distance to the middle of the pond and use a steady retrieve to hook up
Video clip below shows the COAF Griffith's Gnat hooking up with two Rainbow Trout:
Overall, the action had been hit or miss at our local pond. Trout were actively rising on the surface throughout the day, but fishermen were having trouble consistently hooking up.
There were a few fisherman who did get a limit, and as the afternoon progressed, one area of the pond seemed to have a flurry of activity that resulted in a limit being taken in less than 30" by one fisherman.
Key notes from today were:
Super Dupers worked early in the day but the bite turned off
Bubble Fly Rigs with a Prince Nymph were getting strikes but hook ups were spotty
Black Midge Dry Fly were also getting strikes but missed hook sets seemed to be the norm
Bubble Fly Rigs with a PowerWorm seemed to be the go to rig/lure today
COAF Griffith's Gnat (variant of the Griffith's Gnat) worked well for rising trout

When midges are on the water think Griffith’s Gnat.
While at first glance this fly doesn’t really appear to be a great imitation of one of the smallest insects on the water, when midges hatch heavily, they tend to cluster together in the current to create a more significant meal for hungry trout.
When fished in combination with a more realistic midge or mayfly nymph as a dropper some amazing fishing can be had. It is the ultimate technical micro dry-dropper rig.
