Spinnernbaits Worked Well This Round

Wind has been making it tough for us to go kayak fishing.  Really would like to catch a few more Keeper White Bass for another Beer Batter Fish Fry. 20+ mph winds had us shift to bank fishing.  This time fished Bethany. Was a tough go with no strikes on a crankbait or a spinnerbait with a plastic worm trailer. Removed the plastic worm, and started hooking up. Caught five Bass and lost two others. Fun stuff!

Just a Cloud... Struck Out This Round

Checked out Lake Lavon this morning by Little Ridge Park.  Had a little rain but was just a cloud passing by.  Wind was brutal though. Worse... struck out with no fish caught.  Oh well, better luck next time!

Lake level remains low; saw several areas that we liked to fish in the past closed due to low water. So, maybe it won't be just  a cloud passing by next time!

Podcast - June 27, 2014 Weekly Fishing Summary

Hi All -
We tried this several years ago... posting Podcasts on the blog. Worked well until our host discontinued the service.  That said, we found another means for posting them.  Here is one that recaps the past week. Do stay tuned for more... we hope!

Note: Mentioned Ticky Creek Park Pond in the Podcasts; it is actually Ticky Creek Park on Lake Lavon.

Windy and Waves This Round

Headed to Ticky Creek Park for more kayak fishing. Boat ramp was closed but not an issue with the kayak. Launched from the beach without an issue. Windy though and water was rough. Had a tough time hooking up. Did get a Yellow Bass and a White Bass after getting a good workout in! Both went for Crappie Jigs.

Elk Hair Caddis This Time

Started out fishing a Grasshopper, then switched to a Foam Damsel Fly as well as a Tube Popper Fly and a Balsa Popper Fly. Had strikes but just were not hooking them. Went to an Elk Hair Caddis in Size 14 and started hooking up with Bass and Bluegill!  Fun stuff, even had some good tunes in the background from the Summer Sounds Concert that the City hosts.

Yesterday's Catch for a Beer Batter Fish Fry!

Cleaned the White Bass that we caught kayak fishing yesterday. Took the extra step and removed the "red meat" from the fillets, and then cooked them using a Beer Batter Fish Fry recipe that we got from a kayak fishing magazine.  Made some changes here and there to the original recipe for the batter and the tartar sauce. Had a tasty meal this evening! Check out today's video and the recipe video below!

Another Round... Foam Grasshopper Worked Well

Fished Bethany this evening. Started out fishing the Red and White Tube Fly that we used yesterday while kayak fishing. Had a strike and a miss, and then a hook up with a Bass.  Then, after no takes for a while, switched to a White Foam Grasshopper in Size 12.  Managed catching a couple more Bass, then lucked into a bed of Bluegill.  Caught a number of them, then switched to a Green Foam Grasshopper in Size 10.  Was able to catch a couple more Bass that went about 13", and then closed the round with one last Bluegill!  Fun stuff!

Kayaking for White Bass this Round

Hit Lake Lavon at Little Ridge Park this morning.  Took kayaks out this time and did some kayak trolling. Managed to catch a few White Bass.  Only six were Keepers but still had a good time and a good workout!

Used a Red and White Tube Fishing Fly, a Red and Chartreuse Crappie Jig, and a Chartreuse Slab.  Caught most on the Red and White Tube Fishing Fly!

Another Round with a Balsa Popper Fly

Another round with a Balsa Popper Fly this evening at Bethany Lakes.  Caught six Bass, there was a Bass #7 but it came off the hook, and then out my hands when I picked up.  It got away! Had a fun time, liking the jig hook on the popper fly!

Balsa Popper Fly This Round

Made it out this evening to try the Balsa Popper Flies tied using jig hooks. Caught a few, missed a few, even lost a Balsa Popper Fly. Popper was easier to "pop" with the jig hook and the movement was erratic like a wounded bait fish! Also, used an airbrush to paint the popper bodies this time; much better paint job then the paint brush!

Balsa Popper Flies...

Stocked up on more Balsa Popper Flies. Tried a larger hook as well as used a jig hook having run short of hooks.  Will have to see how these work on the local Bass!

Tough Go This Round!

Had a tough time today. Only managed a few Bluegill and Sunfish. Did video of a Gar lurking in the water. Lots of weeds and algae since we were here during the Winter Trout Stocking in February.

More Fun Fishing

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening. Brought the Five Weight Fly Rod but this time replaced the reel with a 4/5 Weight Echo Ion. Liked the 8/10 Weight for the Switch Rod; decided to get the smaller size reel for the Five Weight!  Liked it, too!

Started fishing with a Foam Damsel Fly and caught Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass.  Did lose one to a decent Bass that broke the tippet.  Later, switched to a Tube Popper Fly.  Missed several nice looking fish; too slow on the hookset.  But, did get two Bass!

Fun stuff!

COAF Guadalupana, Balsa Popper Fly, and then a Foam Damsel Fly

Fished Bethany Lakes this evening.  Started out catching Bluegill using a COAF Guadalupana by the Waterfall. Then, worked the Main Pond; two missed strikes else no fish.  Began working the Back Pond and lucked into a bed of Bluegill; caught a number of them with a Balsa Popper Fly.  As the evening progressed, noticed the Dragonflies and Damselflies hovering about... switched to a Foam Damsel Fly and caught four Bass before calling it a trip.  Fun stuff... out of Foam Damsel Flies though; Bass really beat them up this time. Good thing they are an easy and fast pattern to tie!

Another Round This Evening

Went back out for another round of fishing this evening.  Decided to give a Foam Damsel Fly a try at Kroger Park Pond.  Slow action with little bluegill nipping at the fishing fly but no hook ups. Then, started working pockets in the algae and caught two Bass.  Then, worked the shoreline and got one more Bass to take.  Afterwards, switched to a Tube Popper Fly and hooked a Bass!  Fun stuff!

Here is a picture of the last Bass and video of the action:

Summer Pattern Setting In...

Looks like the Summer pattern is setting in; time to fish early morning and evening.  Fished Bethany and Sonic Pond with only one Bluegill to show for it.  Went mid-day in the heat; saw virtually no activity save for a couple of little Sunfish and a Bluegill.

Damsel Flies This Round

Brought the Switch Rod and fished Plano East Senior High School's catch and release ponds. Slow action this time but did manage to hook up with four fish.  First one was a little Bluegill that went for a Purple COAF Damsel Fly.  Second one was a Sunfish that also went for the Damsel Fly. Next, was a Catfish that went for a Tube Damsel Fly in purple marabou.  Last one was a Bass that took the Purple COAF Damsel Fly as well.  Took a quick measure of the Bass; went just under 15"!  Fun stuff!
