Bass Love the Copper Mepps Aglia Inline Spinner

Some lures just stay reliable year after year, and the copper Mepps Aglia inline spinner is one of them. I tied it on today expecting a few curious followers, but the bass went after it harder than I expected. This fish was just one of several that couldn’t resist the flash and vibration.

I love days like this — simple gear, light tackle, and a lure that does exactly what it’s supposed to do. The Mepps Aglia has always been a confidence bait for Average Angler Life, especially when I’m running ultralight or BFS setups. It casts well, it runs clean, and it gets bit even when the fish are being picky.

Here’s the quick highlight — one of several bass that smashed the copper blade today.

Cold Evening Bass on a Rooster Tail!

The temps dropped, but the bass didn’t shut down. I stuck around until sunset with a Rooster Tail inline spinner tied on, hoping for a couple last bites before the light disappeared. Sure enough, the bass were still willing to play.

There’s something about those cool‑evening sessions that feels different — quieter, slower, and a little more rewarding. When a bass loads up on an inline spinner right before dark, it hits with that extra bit of energy that makes the whole trip worth it.

Here’s the quick highlight — a fading sunset, cooler air, and a couple bass that kept the day alive right to the end.

Mobile Fishing Livestream 143 (Spotify)

December 20, 2025 – Blue River, OK

Hey everyone! Just got back from a solid day on the Blue River in Oklahoma at Hughes Crossing on December 20, 2025. Water was clear, flow was perfect, and the trout were biting steadily all day.

I landed about 10 rainbows (kept two for dinner) and lost plenty more. Morning action was strong on Olive Near Deere and Orange Eggstacy Egg patterns. Once the sun came out, white Mega Worms took over, with a hot stretch on Chartreuse Polar Flash White Mop Fly.

Going live tonight to share details (December 21, 2025 at 8:30PM Central), answer your questions about the Blue River right now, talk flies, tactics, conditions, and anything else on your mind for Oklahoma (and Texas) trout fishing this winter.

Drop in, say hi, and bring your questions—let's talk fishing!See you soon—hit that notification bell and join the live!

Warm Evening Pond Bass on an Ultralight Baitcaster

Warm evenings and ultralight baitcasting just go together. I headed out to the pond with a simple plan — tie on an inline spinner, walk the bank, and see if any bass were willing to play. It didn’t take long before a few fish showed up, including this scrappy one that hit way harder than its size.

That’s what I love about ultralight baitcasting. Every bite feels bigger, every fight feels personal, and even the smaller bass can put a real bend in the rod. On a quiet pond with a little breeze and fading light, it’s the perfect way to end the day.

Here’s the quick highlight — a warm evening, a simple setup, and a bass that made the ultralight gear earn its keep.

Pond Fly Fishing: Bluegill and a Little Bass

Pond fly fishing days always feel a little different — quieter, slower, and somehow more personal. I grabbed the fly rod, walked the bank, and let the water tell me what was going on. It didn’t take long before a bluegill flashed on the fly, followed by a little bass that couldn’t resist the drift.

Nothing huge, nothing dramatic — just simple, honest fishing. Short casts, soft takes, and that satisfying bend in the rod that reminds you why a fly rod belongs at the pond too. These small‑water moments are the heart of Average Angler Life.

Here’s the quick highlight — a bluegill, a little bass, and a peaceful pond session that hit the spot.

Inline Spinners for Bass? Why They Still Work with BFS and Ultralight

Some baits never go out of style, and the inline spinner is one of them. Most anglers think of it as a trout lure, but bass will absolutely crush it when the conditions line up. That little flash, that steady vibration — it’s a confidence bait for Average Angler Life, especially when I’m running BFS or ultralight gear.

Inline spinners shine when bass are cruising, chasing bait, or just not committing to bigger profiles. They’re simple, they cast well for their size, and they let you cover water without overthinking the retrieve. Sometimes the easiest bait in the box is the one that gets the job done.

Here’s a quick highlight from the water — a reminder that if you’re into BFS or ultralight fishing, don’t forget to keep a few inline spinners in your pack. They might just save the day.

Morning Freeze, Hot Bites: Bethany Lakes Fishing Report

Mobile Fishing Livestream 142 (Spotify)

December 7, 2025 – Allen, TX

This morning at Bethany Lakes, I nearly froze my fingers off—but the trout didn’t care one bit.

It was misty, bone-chilling cold at 43°F, and this warm-weather Texan was seriously second-guessing his life choices... until the first rainbow trout slammed my line like it owed me money.

What Went Down
  • Spot: Bethany Lakes – Main Pond C
  • Bait: Gold Super Duper (still a classic killer)
  • Rig: Ultralight 7ft Ugly Stik, Shimano Curado BFS-XG Reel, 20lb Youzuri braided line + 10lb Stern Fluorocarbon leader
  • Catches: 2 Rainbows (both around 10” – feisty little fighters!)
Conditions
  • Temp: 43–46°F
  • Wind: N 10–15 mph, with occasional mist rolling in
  • Vibe: Pure winter punishment… until the bite turned on.
Average Angler Tip
  • Hand warmers + thermos = survival. Coffee = mandatory.
  • Pro move: Sight cast to visible schools and let the lure free-fall. The trout were hugging the bottom until something shiny fluttered down like breakfast.
LIVE Q&A – Drop Your Questions Below!

I went live this morning—raw footage of the trout fights, wind gusts nearly yeeting my rod into the pond, and all the chaos in between.

Early Shallow Bite: Bass on a Mepps Aglia Inline Spinner

The bass showed their hand early today. Instead of waiting for the sun to warm things up, they pushed minnows into the shallows and started feeding sooner than I expected. Moments like that flip the whole plan on its head — and that’s where the fun begins for Average Angler Life.

When the bite turns into a baitfish chase, I reach for something simple, bright, and reliable. The Mepps Aglia Plain Trout inline spinner has bailed me out more times than I can count, and today it came through again. A little flash, a steady retrieve, and it matched the mood of those shallow‑water bass perfectly.

Here’s the quick highlight — early minnow activity, a fast pattern change, and a spinner that got the job done. Just another honest day on the water, reading what the fish are telling you and rolling with it.

Ultralight Baitcaster Win: Trout on a Rooster Tail

Some days on the water are all about the little wins — and today, Average Angler Life avoided the dreaded strike‑out. After a few close calls, I finally convinced a trout to commit to a Rooster Tail inline spinner fished on an ultralight baitcasting setup. Light line, tiny blade, and just enough flash to seal the deal.

There’s something special about ultralight baitcasting. Every bump feels bigger, every take feels sharper, and when that fish finally loads up the rod, it’s pure fun. Nothing oversized, nothing dramatic — just an honest, clean catch that reminds you why simple gear and simple moments matter.

Here’s the quick highlight from the trip — a small victory, a solid strike, and another good day on the water with Average Angler Life.

What Size Strike Indicator Should You Use? Here’s the Simple Rule.

When it comes to strike indicators, there’s one simple rule I live by on the water: use the smallest indicator that will still keep your fly drifting at the depth you want. It sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference in how natural your presentation looks.

Too big and it splashes, drags, and spooks fish. Too small and it sinks or disappears the moment you need it. Dialing in that balance is where clean drifts and subtle takes really come alive.

In this quick highlight, Average Angler Life breaks down how to size your indicator based on water speed, fly weight, and the kind of takes you're expecting. Subtle takes? Go tiny. Heavy rigs or deep runs? Step up just enough to stay afloat. Here's the clip.

TBT Pond Catfish Fishing with Homemade Doughbait!

This throwback takes me back to another pond catfish trip where my homemade doughbait recipe really got to shine. I mixed up a batch, headed to a local pond, and before long the catfish were finding it cast after cast. Nothing fancy—just a simple setup, steady bites, and that classic slow, heavy pull that makes pond fishing so relaxing.

There’s something extra satisfying about catching fish on bait you made yourself. It turns a regular pond session into a little experiment that pays off in bends, runs, and a few more memories for the Average Angler Life story.

If you’ve ever rolled your own bait and watched it work, this TBT will feel familiar in the best way. Here’s the quick highlight.

TBT Tenkara Fishing Gone Wrong: I Caught Goldfish!

This throwback takes me back to one of the funniest fishing moments I’ve had in a long time. I grabbed the tenkara rod for a simple, light‑tackle session… and somehow ended up catching goldfish. Not exactly the target species, but absolutely a memory worth keeping.

It was one of those moments where you’re fighting a fish, look down, and your brain needs a second to process what you’re seeing. All you can do is laugh, shake your head, and enjoy the surprise. Fishing has a way of throwing curveballs, and this one still cracks me up.

If you’ve ever had a fishing trip go sideways in the funniest way possible, this TBT will feel familiar. Here’s the quick highlight.

TBT Pond Catfish Fishing — From Daylight to Night

This throwback takes me back to a pond catfish trip that rolled from daylight into the night. I started with a simple setup and some doughbait, just enjoying the calm water and steady bites. As the sun dropped and the sky shifted colors, the catfish kept feeding, and the whole trip turned into one of those peaceful sessions where time slows down.

There’s something special about pond fishing after dark — the sounds change, the water feels different, and every tug on the line gets your attention. It wasn’t a complicated trip, but it was one of those honest, everyday fishing moments that sticks with you.

If you’ve ever fished a pond from day into night, you know exactly the kind of vibe this TBT brings. Here’s the quick highlight.

TBT Pond Fishing: Bass and Bluegill Mix

This throwback takes me back to a laid‑back pond trip where the fish were in a generous mood. I set up on a small pond with a simple setup and started working the water, just seeing what wanted to bite.

Before long, I was into a fun mix of Bass and Bluegill. The Bass brought those quick, sharp runs that jolt the rod to life, and the Bluegill added that steady, determined pull that always feels bigger than it looks. Cast after cast, there was just enough action to keep things interesting.

Trips like this are a big part of what Average Angler Life is all about—no big boats, no complicated plans, just a pond, some time outside, and a mix of fish willing to play along. Here’s the quick TBT highlight.

TBT: Pond Catfish Fishing with Doughbait

This throwback takes me back to a simple pond catfish trip where everything lined up just right. I had a good batch of doughbait, calm weather, and a pond full of willing catfish. It didn’t take long before the rod started bending and the fish made their presence known.

Cast after cast, the bites stayed steady. The catfish weren’t monsters, but they had enough weight and attitude to make every hookup fun. There’s something about that slow, heavy pull of a catfish that never gets old.

If you’ve ever sat by a pond waiting for that next catfish to load up the rod, this TBT will feel familiar in the best way. Here’s the quick highlight.

TBT: Big Bluegill at the George Bush Library

This throwback takes me back to a fun, unexpected fishing moment at the George Bush Library on the Texas A&M campus. I wasn’t on a dedicated fishing trip, but when I walked past the water, it looked too good to ignore—so of course, I grabbed a rod.

A few casts later, I was into some surprisingly nice Bluegill. For a quick, unplanned stop, they put a serious bend in the rod and turned into one of those simple fishing memories that sticks with you long after the day is over.

When Everyone Catches Fish… and I Catch Bait

Some days on the water just keep you humble. In this collab meme-style moment, I’m watching another angler reel in solid fish one after another… and when my turn finally comes, I pull up a tiny little fish that honestly looks like it escaped from the bait bucket.

But that’s fishing. Some days you’re the hero, some days you’re the comic relief — and either way, you walk away with a good story and a laugh. This little moment was too good not to share.

Here’s the quick highlight from the collab.

Limit Out or Go Home… It Took All Day, But I Got There!

Mobile Fishing Livestream 140 (Spotify)

Blue River, Oklahoma – November 22, 2025

Yesterday was one of those classic Blue River grind days: cold front moving in, water low and gin-clear, trout scattered and stubborn. I rolled in at legal light with one goal: fill the five-fish limit in the fly-and-lure-only section below the dam. Spoiler alert – mission accomplished… but it was an absolute marathon.

I started the morning throwing everything in the box that’s been hot lately:

  • Mop flies (yes, the infamous “banned fly” in some circles)
  • Egg patterns in peach and chartreuse
  • Standard hare’s ears, pheasant tails, and prince nymphs
  • Even broke out Power Worms for a hot minute (don’t judge me)

Zero Trout all morning, I was playing around with the center-pin rig just for fun. Around noon I finally had one take a white Near Deere (size 10) but lost it when I snagged a rock. I kept at it and about an hour later, I caught the biggest trout this round on the same Near Deere.

I had tied on a trailing Power Worm and drifted the tandem rig to a likely spot. I saw a trout moving past then turn and strike. Initially, I thought it went for the Power Worm; it did not... a white Near Deere stuck secure to its jaw!

More hours later, I caught and landed a trout by the rocks downriver from the Island. They were lurking in several pockets that typically hold trout each season. I caught one and kept it, striking an olive Near Deere.

I then lost the fly, tied on a white Near Deere and a trailing Rainbow Warrior, and soon hooked another trout but it was foul hooked and too small... opted to release it.

I checked other spots without luck, then settled back by the Island as the sun started dropping. There I caught another small trout that I released, fished till I caught one little bit bigger to limit out.

Afterwards I spent another 30 minutes catch-and-release fishing before heading home where I promptly broiled them for dinner!

All in all, it was a day of persistence. Sometimes you throw the kitchen sink, sometimes you just need the right fly in the right pocket. Working the rocks, reading the currents, and staying mobile paid off!

Tight lines, see you on the water (or on the live stream)!
