Caught a 16.5" Bass using an artificial minnow. Hooked two others about the same size but did not land them. All were caught/observed near the bridge. Also, used a "fuzzy bugger" but the fish were not interested.

Olive Wooly Bugger continues to produce at Bethany Lakes with a few scrappy Bass caught this evening. More details on the weblog.

March 17, 2009 - St. Patrick's Day Bass
Fished Bethany Lakes this St. Patrick's Day evening for another try at Bass. Fished the Lower Pond without success, and then moved to the Upper Pond (horseshoe-shaped) without a strike.
Decided to try elsewhere. While leaving for another spot, noticed fish actively feeding in the shallows. Stood fast and cast an Olive Wooly Bugger and immediately started getting strikes.
Caught 5 Bass ranging from 10" to 12"; lost another Bass in about the same size range; and then had a decent strike but no hook-up on a larger Bass.
All were caught flyfishing and in a 30 minute timeframe from when they started feeding in the shallows to when the bite stopped.
Suspect they were chasing baitfish!

March 15, 2009 - Only One But...
Fished Bethany Ridge Park near Kroger. No bites. Crossed the street to Bethany Lakes and had a few light strikes flyfishing an Olive Wooly Bugger. And then, hooked into one that went 19.5" and weighed 4 lbs. Only one this trip but it turned out to be a personal best Bass on a fishing fly!

March 8, 2009 - A Bass, A Crappie, and Bluegill.
Went back to Bethany Lakes for a chance at the Bass. Decided to use flyfishing gear and managed to catch a Bass, a Crappie, and a few Bluegill.
First used a Green Foam Rubber Spider and had strikes on the surface from the Bluegill. But, was not able to set the hook fast enough.
Tied a White Spider Variant and caught and landed fish. The White Spider Variant is the same as the Foam Rubber Spider less the foam.

March 2, 2009 - Towne Lake Update
Was worried that the Cormorant have cleaned out the Trout at Towne Lake. However, a member of our Field Team reports catching Trout this evening. So, the Trout seem to be holding their own for now!
March 2, 2009 - 3 Trout and a Carp!
Fished McKinney's Towne Lake this evening. Caught 3 Trout and a Carp that went 18". Action was slow but steady. Should have taken a limit but reflexes were not fast enough tonight.
Trout were caught using Bread free-lined on a treble hook. Carp was also caught on Bread and same gear used for Trout - 4.5 foot spinning rod and reel on 4lbs test. Carp was a lot of fun on light tackle. Released it to play another day.
Checked stomach contents of the Trout. One had Corn and Bread; other two were empty.

March 1, 2009 - Limited Out @ Towne Lake.
Fished the early afternoon with the action picking up later in the day. Able to take another limit of Trout at McKinney's Towne Lake. However, action has slowed compared to last week.
Took about 2 hours to get a limit, and the frequency of bites was lower than last week. First three were caught using Corn fished on the bottom. Last two were taken on Bread free-lined using a treble hook.
Checked stomach contents. Two had Corn, one had a Crappie Nibble in Chartruese. Remainder were empty. Noted others fishing the surface were having good success. Lures and flyfishing did not appear to be productive.
FYI: Cormorant arrived and started chasing/eating the Trout. Best bet is to fish Towne Lake sooner than later as the Cormorant will take their share quickly.

Summary of Lures/Baits Used for Trout.
Summary of lures and baits used for Trout during the 2008-2009 Season. Information is based on observations and postings submitted by the Field Team as of February 23, 2009. Summary will be the final report for the season.
Chart 1 shows the top 3 lures/baits for Trout this season were Powerbait, Corn, and Super Dupers with Powerbait being a consistent producer compared to other lures/baits.
Summary of Lures/Baits Used For Trout - Chart 1

Chart 2 shows the top 3 Powerbaits were Orange, "Not Stated", and Chartreuse. In the case of "Not Stated", no color details were available for a given observation.
Bottomline: Bring Powerbait, Corn, and Super Dupers when pursuing Trout in the local community lakes and ponds. For Powerbait, Orange and Chartreuse colors are recommended. A closer look at the data further suggests using Super Dupers in Gold and Silver and Rooster Tails in White and Yellow.
Good luck and good fishing!
