Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass at Bethany Lakes

Missed the Fishing Derby today but did make it out to Bethany Lakes for some Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass!  Used the Tenkara Rod and a White Foam Spider and a Purple Damsel Fly.  Fun stuff...!

  1. Sounds like the Bass and Pan fish are hitting! I've Hit Bethany Lakes just about everyday last week. I left the flies at home and went with the old hook and worm. I was mainly trying to catch cat fish. Well I tried Fishing with a float, off the bottom, dough bait, and Stink bait. What the trick? I've caught cats on the upper pond but nothing but bass and brim on the other ponds. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi EMSfishing,
The Bass and Panfish were biting last week but the recent cool front has changed the pattern and slowed things down. Should pick up again when the temps warm again.

For baitfishing, mainly fish with Bread and/or Doughbait for Catfish in the Main Pond (one with the fountain and nearest the parking lot). The trick is to use no weight, just tie a hook on to the line and cast it out. Leave the reel in free spool and let the Catfish run with the bait a little before setting the hook.

For Bass and Panfish, mainly fish for them using fishing flies. Preference is a Size 10 Olive Wooley Bugger and a White Foam Spider when they are striking on the surface.

There are Bass, Catfish, and Panfish in all the ponds but seem to catch them more often in the Main Pond.

Did catch a number of small Crappie in the Lower Pond last week. They were hanging out in the shallows under the Cypress knees.

The key to catching them is to use start casting well away from the bank and make sure to cover the shallows where they lurk. Have caught a number of fish - large and small, less than 10' from the bank.

Hope this helps... Good luck and good fishing!
